Quite pathetic really. If they are going to continue to do this they should not be allowed to compete.

A very bizarre incident to say the least.

Props to those guys who stayed out.

Nobody stayed out for the anthem. This is a myth that continues to live on even though the medal ceremony is there for all to see on YouTube.

Good on the IIHF for not falling for the crap that it was all a misunderstanding.

Some players did stay on ice

Kovalchuk should have received an IIHF suspension for his blatant disrespect and terrible leadership. Those who did remain on the ice should be highly commended for being sportsmen rather than sheep.

I love how the Russians keep providing fuel towards the long-standing Canada-Russia rivalry. It makes moments like the 2010 Olympics QF blowout so much more satisfying when you know how much it crushed them.

Not a big deal, I think its OK for the losing team to leave once they have their medals and have shaken hands.

From the IIHF site:

"Supported by video footage of the ceremony, the Deciding Panel of the IIHF Disciplinary Board ascertained that the Russian team captain had discussions with team staff members, after which he talked to his teammates, at the same time moving his head towards the open gate; the gate had been open since the start of the ceremony. The majority of the players and the staff members left the ice immediately following the Canadian Players receiving their medals while a few players remained, eventually leaving the ice themselves a little later.

The remainder of the medal ceremony took place in absence of the Russian national team and its staff. This was exceptional as no other team has ever left the ice before the IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship medal ceremony was completed."

I'm still going to give these guys a bit more of the benefit of the doubt.

I'm sure they were embarrassed by their countrymen.

I wonder if the Russians left because the confetti started to fall right after Canada received their medals and trophy.

As I understand it, the fall of confetti usually comes after the anthem and marks the end of the ceremony, so maybe the Russians assumed it was time to leave.

Or maybe they were just being dicks, I dunno.

I vote for the latter. Most of the Russians had already left before the confetti fell.

Besides if you can't tell the difference between an announcer and confetti verses a national anthem and confetti you should probably retire from hockey before another hard hit takes away the last functioning brain cells.

There is a reason this stunt was without precedent on an international scale.

Yeah you'd want to think it was an innocent mistake and maybe if it was a country like Belarus you could give them the benefit of the doubt, but in this tourney the Russians have been up on the podium enough that they should have known better.

Didn't they not bother showing up to the medal ceremony in Salt Lake City, where they won bronze?

I wish that they had received a harsher punishment than a mere fine, like a suspension to Kovalchuk, but I don't think that was realistic for a first offense.

Punishment seems appropriate. I wouldn't suspend a player for just leaving before anthems. Unsportsmanlike thing to do, and if it happens again the penalty should be harsher, but not a huge deal.

Why commend someone for doing the bare ****ing minimum?

I don't think they should be commended necessarily, but they were put in a tough spot in terms of deciding to stick with the rest of their team and their captain in leaving or doing what is right and respectful and staying on the ice.

They kinda picked both I guess. Staying out for a little while and then leaving when they realized they were the only Russians still out there.

This doesn't look good on the Russians, and Kovalchuk in particular. Don't think he'll be captain any more.

confetti there, before anthems and after celebrating with the trophy, etc. Russians were still on the ice, and were listening the anthem right after that.
