We aren't ever allowed to be good. In a year where Russia has a weaker 19 year old crop and their best player is by far their 18 year old goalie, who has no track record of playing well in this tournament, we aren't allowed to be better. Only certain teams are allowed to be really good. If we win this game (or tournament) its because we scrapped and fought and got some luck. It can't be that we were simply better than they thought. And don't forget that our 19 year old crop is very overrated. Why? Who knows, but they aren't allowed any credit because it might defy logic why a team with such a good 19 year old crop gets no respect in some quarters.
How much track record do you expect out of 19 year old kids?

Hes an unreal goalie and could steal the tourney let alone this game.

Is the iihf really this bad at updating the scores? They dont even have the earlier games up yet.

Are you serious?

Canada completely controlled the game.

But i still suspect we see russia in the gold medal game. Askarov is insanely good.
Yeah, yeah, the ususal "Canada dominated", "Canada controlled". It's not about who is skating around with the puck more. It's who scores more goals. With a bit mre luck, Russia would have won that 2:1 or 3:1 converting on those scoring chances. Then what? That game meant exactly nothing, so it doesn't hurt. Russia's best players will be expected ti bury their chances in the games that matter. The russian D was as expected not star-ladden, but they did a good job keeping the Canadians to the perimeter most of the time and clearing out the dangerous zones. It is indeed an old battle of two different strategies. Canada played the very essential canadian game, systemic yet uncreative relying on exactly that - forechecking and pressure, while some canadian teams recently have shown us a nice up-to-date blended version of it. Don't know if it's coaching or if both coaches were holding back a lot. Russia on the other hand failed to capitalize on chances as I said before. Nobody would go 100% in a pre-tournament game though. The unfortunate Dach injury tells the whole story. Probabaly hurts Canada more than losing that game 0:6 would.

The game tomorrow will be completely different. That's where the real begins. Knight vs. Askarov is going to be fun.

Whining already? Both teams are solid and threats to win it all. Problem is they're in the same side, which makes the game all that more important. After seeing how Russia played a physical game vs Canada, I think they take this one, but it'll be close....2-1 Russia.

Yeah, but Russia still had more scoring chances... We saw so many Canada - Soviet/Russia games in the past, when Canadians "completely controlled the game" and still lost.

Have to love this matchup. Havent seen much about USA but Russians team was very good in EHT tournament at Helsinki. Im betting my money for 2-2 draw. Let the fun begin

This is probably my favorite matchup in the preliminary round. The best 2 goalies, some great forwards on both sides. The Americans have the edge on D I think but this should be a fun game. 3-2 USA in Overtime.

Hilarious...but doing my morning coffee read of some Russian sites, it seems you + a few other hf luminaires made the grade. congrats, you've gone international. They did make one very small mistake with their translation, however. but no biggy.

I don't think either team is a match for the refs, I don't think it will even be close. The refs will take it 6-2-2.

This is on at 10:30 for me, nice way to close out the day. Couldn't care less who wins just hoping for good entertainment value.

Looking forward to a good outing. US looked against the Finns
Russia looked ok against the Canadians

Lets see how it goes. Looking forward to see how Askarov performs

As I said earlier, it was a good win for Canada, but far from dominant, as we were led to expect. With all the comparisons to the 2005 team, it was a 1-0 game. There are no statistics to support the notion that Canada controlled the game. Shots on goal, which is often a meaningless stat, were 29-23, no big deal! The difference between the two teams was when Larionov decided to pull Askarov after the 2nd period, seemingly to give the backup some playing time. He let in a soft goal that ended up being the margin of victory. In terms of talent, Russia probably matches up well against anyone.
