That was a low hit.. hipcheck or not. He was trying to submarine him

Exactly. He could have just hit him with out trying to go low and take out his legs. It may have not been that dirty, but it wasn't necessary to take him out like that. Physical hockey is good, but not like that.....

I didn't realize it was clean to hipcheck a players knees.

It is, but it's one of those things that are just ugly to see.

Even first period. Neither team has been able to get the game where they want it.

1st period is over. It's been good hockey so far I think, but could use a little more flow and Russia's gotta get organized on the powerplay.

IIHF Hockey Rules:
"524 Clipping
A player who delivers a check in a clipping manner or lowers his own body position to deliver a check on or below an opponents knees, shall be assessed a:
-Minor penalty (2)

A player who injures his opponent by a clipping action, shall be assessed a:
- Major penalty (5)"

I don't know about you, but I think it looked like Kasparaitis lowered his own body position to deliver a check on Gagnes knees, injuring him in the process.

What the hell are you all talking about? It was not knee-on-knee, it was Kaspar's big butt in the air and Gagne not looking where his running. Gagne just got up-ended, he literally got airborne and he landed on his thigh/back. It's a clean check.

Oh man, what a game!

Canada's first period heroes: Shane Doan and Martin Brodeur.

I'd say it's pretty even five-on-five but the Russian PP looks a lot better than ours.

Still, some good cycling, and I like what I'm seeing.

Clean hit IMO. He was trying to take him out of the play but not trying to hurt him.

Bright side of any injury is that Eric Staal will be inserted. Thats big trouble for the rest of the teams and they know it.

Too bad we had to lose one of our top performing players though. I've been hoping for Staal (yes over Spezza) to get a shot though so here's hoping he takes full advantage.

Whos out playing who or is it about even ?

A slight edge for Russia. Canada is having some trouble handling Russia's speed. However, Canada has put some nice pressure on with their cycling game down low.

Russia has had more scoring chances though.

No doubt about that

someone explain how the fan in Toronto can cover the world championships but not the olympics?
It''s starting to make me sick!

Tell that to Canada team. This is there game plan " we have to hit hit hit". I havent seen the hit but if it was something like Timmy C. got then it clean in my book.

As far as Kasparaitis goes, Gagne is not tall enough to have his knees on the same level as Kasparaitis' hip.. it was a clean check.

Russia is all over Canada. But I'm biased.

Definately biased. The teams are looking pretty even. Great hockey so far and it looks like it may be a low scoring game.

You could see in Kasparaitis face that he didn't like the injury. The defensive move was superb.

That is a huge assumption in a 0-0 game. How do you know both Gagne and Stall and all of Team Canada will not be flying home?

Not according to the rules just posted. It was a major penalty.

Canada has to hit more. It's hard cuz the russians are extremely fast..but I think that a couple of CLEAN checks by our big bodies (Pronger, Blake, Bert) could make the russian team more cautious about crossing our blue line...

That's what I saw, but it's over and done with now.
