One thing I like about Vermette is we can use him as a true faceoff/shutdown specialist. Also it's more depth in case we don't survive the preseason without injuries.

Apparently the Rangers turned down 2 second rounders for Talbot.

Agreed on a 3 year (hypothetically) we could really groom Bennett properly.

I'd be fine with the Flames considering him as a guy to sign to a one-year deal (to be traded at the deadline), but they've already got a pretty full forward corps. It's really only right wing and better quality that they need, and I don't think Vermette is better than Backlund or Stajan at this stage.

No one would sign with the Flames after that.

Another UFA worth considering: Jan Hejda. Again, depends on what other teams are willing to offer.

Vermette allegedly wants 5M+. He might even get that after the finals he had plus the weak UFA crop.

According to Dreger, whose updates on the Talbot sweepstakes seem to have been written by Sather himself.

Talbot will be a UFA in a year; if the Rangers don't trade him, he'll walk guaranteed. And given the number of goalies available, if Sather manages to do better than two seconds, well, maybe he shouldn't retire anytime soon.

I don't think anyone should pay that for Talbot. But we'll see. Any trades for goalies just lessen the number of teams interested in Ramo.

Not terribly expensive. I'd offer him a 3 year deal 18m 6m AAV ( 7.5m/7.5m/3.0m)

I hope the oil pay with their first. But I am a mean person.

One thing we have going for us this season is that we can offer the chance to play for a playoff team on the upswing. Maybe that means we can offer a little less for UFAs than Buffalo or Arizona.

If we're considering Vermette at $5m+ (which would be longish term) I'd rather kick tires on Phil the Thrill with the Leafs retaining about $1.5 million salary.

I don't see the Leafs retaining salary. 1.5m retained for 7 years is 10.5m. I don't see the Leafs doing that.

Wonder if that (goalie shortage) allows us to trade Ramo's rights before July 1?

There is an excess of goalies on the market.

And since teams can talk to palyers about a week? before the UFA period, no need to trade for players riights anymore. Except, perhaps, exceptional UFA's, of which there are none.

What does everyone think of signing a guy like Eric Fehr? He could probably be had for relativity cheap. Big buy, shoots right....

Not exactly an excess of quality though. Maybe I have the homer glasses on but Ramo is likely behind Dubnyk on the demand side, not sure who else would be coveted more.

And talking to a player only ups the ante in the sense you know you can offer a player something he'll accept prior to July 1, so acquire his rights so nobody else scoops him up.

IMO Ramo is behind:

Talbot
Lehner
Lack
Raanta
Dubnyk (UFA)
Niemi (UFA)
Neuvirth (UFA)

Can we please just all come to the agreement that Phil "Cookie Monster" Kessel is NOT, I repeat NOT, a good fit for us?
Leafs reportedly want at least a 1st, 2nd, roster player and a B+ prospect, none of which we can afford to give up right now.
And no way the Leafs retain any salary, by doing that you only increase the price it takes to acquire him.

And I'd pass on Vermette too. He's likely one of the premier FA's going to FA. He's going to be getting paid, especially since he just won his cup.

I'd be down to trying for Troy Brouwer from the Caps. Can play a middle 6 role, can bang, and can score some goals.
