Anyone else think its weird how we are talking about offseason changes when this team is still playing hockey?
With such a tight turnaround this team already needs to have a structure and plan in place for their players before they even finish the series.
I think some pretty obvious questions have already been answered heading into next season:
1. Skinner is the guy. We aren't looking for a number one. I also don't think we can afford a true 1B backup for Skinner. I'm interested in what goalies around the league think after seeing how Pickard went from AHLer to backup. If I'm Talbot, Samsanov, Kahkonen, Lankinen, Brossoit, Nedeljkovic, DeSmith, Reimer, Raant, Stolarz, Jones, etc I'm probably calling and taking a bit of a discount. I don't see any reason to overpay the backup at this point.
2. Jack Campbell is getting bought out with a small chance he gets traded so that his dead cap is off the books permanently. I don't see a lot of teams lining up to do us an favors but that contract is coming off the books no matter what.
3. Holloway and Broberg have emerged as NHL players. They are big, strong, fast and young. We need to get younger in the off-season and these guys are going to have larger roles next season on reasonable contracts. Neither has Arb rights or the numbers to warrant large contracts. They will be key for saving money over the next couple of years.
4. Foegele scored 20 goals and someone will give him the bag he wants. We just simply can't afford to keep him if he wants anything close to what he's currently making. Holloway has made Foegele expendable to some degree.
5. Perry and Gagner are done. I would be shocked if they don't retire at the end of the season. Ryan is on the books for another year but he's probably riding in the PB most of the season or the 13th forward.
I think the real questions that come in are how much are teams willing to pay some of our depth guys that have been in and out of the lineup - Desharnais, Janmark and Brown are definitely key guys that we would want to bring back.
