Never really fit with Drai, was never given a chance with Mcdavid, buried in the bottom six once the playoffs rolled around. All he really wanted to do was fade into the background and get open for one-timers, probably could have been a decent triggerman for Mcdavid who dominates puck possession and playmaking in a way Drai doesn't.

Looks like a missed opportunity in hindsight, but there were two places in the top six where they could try him and the coaching staff and team were very reluctant to bump RNH off Mcdavid's wing.

I don't know if we'll ever get to know why top-6 wingers weren't given top-6 slots in the Knoblach era

I have a brother in law who plays hockey and all his kids play hockey with the same argument.

Essentially they were told at some point "your a defenceman, your job is to defend".

They think that's their job. It's the same mentality that forwards job is to score.

Hockey has evolved past that. Those predetermined roles don't apply in the NHL. You need forwards that can play defense and defenseman that can play offence. You need to be able to do it all. Their are only a handful of players capable of driving offence as well as bouchard in the league. For some reason, after you hit like 70 points, the extra offence doesn't seem to matter with voters. They then use the eye test for defence instead of looking at the actual analytics.
I also play Men's League Hockey (badly lol), and moved to Defense as I've aged. I would say that personally it is kinda my style to defend primarily. I do agree with this and there is something to be said for basic positional play.
BUT if/when one D goes deep on offence you need the Center or a Winger to support his position (it's a team sport). You also hope AT LEAST 1 Defenseman is DEFENDING at all times. When you play with better players you see both of these things happening automatically.
