Freddy is always hurt lol
Yep, I know he is which is a big concern but this is a shit toast crop of UFA goalies this year and we can’t have Jarry as the de facto #1. Jarry is injury prone too so bad idea in the end .

With Bobrovsky, if he were to sign with the Oilers, his game load should be managed to a max of 45-47 starts a year in a 1A/1B situation so he’s fresh-ish for the playoffs.

It was mentioned he wants longterm, which at the forefront sounds like a bad idea but this could have its benefits too to become a mentor for Ungar or Jonsson if one pans out.

Meh I'll disagree. Playing Mcdavid and Leon into the ground is not sustainable. We need to change that this season.

It's sort of what happens when you have superstar players. Team offense runs through them. When Pittsburgh won their cups it was much the same with Crosby and Malkin. Kucherov when Tampa won their cups as well.

It feels like an imbalance because of how offensively dominant they are. If we were to lose one of them, yes the team offense would decline a little bit but the goals would organically come from other players.

Especially when Croshy/Malkin and McDavid/Draisaitl anchor their own lines. In a 60 minute hockey game, the minutes go pretty quick.

Mcdavid/Draisaitl played ~18 minutes of EVTOI/GP last season and then they got ~3.5 minutes of powerplay time each game.

I would take them off the PK next year (30 seconds - 1 minute/GP). I would also run a second line powerplay.

But basically when those and their linemates were on the ice, it was ~40 minutes of the hockey game. So the bottom 6 had to split the remaining 20 minutes including ~3 minutes of short handed time. Realistically the 3rd line gets ~10 minutes of 5v5 time and the bottom line gets ~7 minutes a game.

So when fans point to the lack of goal scoring in the bottom 6, its misleading. Our bottom 6 guys dont get the same opportunity that other teams bottom 6 guys get.

I think Knoblauch finally figured out the bottom 6 once Samanski and Dickinson were brought in. I prefer a 4th line that just crashes and bangs but the numbers of the bottom 6 drastically improved when these guys started having roles and consistent linemates. Knoblauch had a tendency to elevate players up to the top 6 when they started playing well instead of just letting them succeed in a depth role.

The bold is easily disprovable when you compare the Oilers to a team like Colorado.

The Avalanche top 2 line C this year were MacKinnon and Nelson. In games they both played in (79 games), one or both of them were on the ice for ~2271 of ~3799 total 5v5 minutes. 60% of the time one or both of them were on the ice at 5v5.

When those two were off the ice at 5v5 their team had 2.36GF/60 and 1.88GA/60

The Oilers top 2 C this year were McDavid and Draisaitl. In games they both played in (65 games), one or both of them were on the ice for ~1810 of ~3228 minutes total 5v5 minutes. 56% of the time at 5v5 one of those two were on the ice.

When those two were off the ice at 5v5 the team had 1.4GF/60 and 2.88GA/60

Our team was playing 2 and a half minutes more per game at 5v5 without McDavid and Draisaitl on the ice than Colorado was without MacKinnon/Nelson on the ice. Yet Colorado's depth scoring was providing a full extra goal per 60 than our depth was.

Taking a look at the offseason and an absolute need to turn things more competitive. I poked around at some of the existing rumours, and would like to promote the following offseason, and I know it's impossible to put it all together, especially as Oilers fans we know our GM usually doesn't get it done, but would appreciate your thoughts, preferably not all grumpy one :)

Oilers sign UFA goalie Connor Ingram for $4 million.
Oilers sign Jason Dickinson $3.5.
Oilers sign Mario Ferraro for $3 million.
Trade Nurse and Beau Akey for Tyler Toffoli.
Trade Jarry and a 2nd for Binnington.
Trade Edmonton's 2028 3rd-Round Pick + forward prospect Sam O'Reilly for Justin Brazeau.
Trade Frederic and a pick for future considerations.

With this, we'd have:

Hyman-McDavid-Savoie
Podkolzin-Draisaitl-Toffoli
RNH-Dickinson-Brazeau
Dach/Janmark-Samanski-Howard

Bouchard-Ekholm
Walman-Murphy
Emberson-Ferraro
Stastney

Binnington
Ingram

And be about $2 million below the cap.

With the exception of Toffoli staying top 6, I think those other 3 RWs float to where things are clicking.

*Respectfully*

Dickinson is going to cost $4.5m+

Sam O'Reilly belongs to to the Tampa Bay Lightning

Nobody's taking the Frederic contract for free. He signed that contract with Edmonton because it was the highest offer, and he's tanked ever since. If teams weren't willing to offer him that much last year, they won't be this year.

It's going to take a lot more than a 2nd to offload Jarry, and that's before you add the value you're paying for Binnington.

Mario Ferraro, well, isn't the same player these days

Thanks! Okay, lets say Dickinson, $4.5, a different prospect for Brazeau, whatever prospect needed to dump Frederic. And I don't know if we'd need much more than a 2nd and Jarry for Binnington, I don't think he's a hot item himself, but throw in an extra future pick or prospect to get er done. Still fits cap wise and eff the future, we have McDavid to accomodate!
