We can only dream of getting Petan back.

:DD

I watching some of the 2015 IIHF juniors reruns and McD, Petan and Lazar were unbelievable. Two of those things are not like the other. Makes me wonder whether it was the Jets org that messed up Petan. Forgot Morrissey was in the mix that year as well. That’s years gotta be my favourite world junior tournament.

Well, he hasn't stuck with the leafs and he passed through waivers so clearly there is something that doesn't line up.

IMO, his footspeed and work ethic are the things that stick out to me.
But seriously, the horse is dead, beaten and burried when it comes to Petan.

True, but Marko Dano - he just needs a regular shift to really shine. :sarcasm:

Guys what is everyone's take on Michael Granlund as our possible 2nd line center?

This is a guy that was very productive in Minnesota but was a pretty shitty fit in Nashville. He is a pending UFA but with the Cap uncertainty this off season and his lack of production in Nashville my guess is things will be more affordable in the UFA market. How would he fit between Ehlers and Laine? He just turned 28 so not a bad age?

Thoughts?

Strengths?

Weaknesses?

not sure how good of a C he actually is. His most productive seasons came at Wing. Id be fine on a short-term deal though, he is a good player and strong play-maker. I think he might be interested in a short-term deal too in order to put up some better stats after an underwhelming stint in Nashville, and then cash in on another UFA deal.

Top 6 of:
Connor-Scheifele-Wheeler
Ehlers-Granlund-Laine

or Wheeler at C and bump Granlund to Wing.

I have advocated for him as a potential solution for a bit.

Pluses: He is an elite play driver who tilts the ice. Primarily a playmaker meshes with our wingers. Plays a tenacious game and is good in his end.

Flaws: Proba lying a better winger then C. Production went down in Nashville but it seems all their forwards took a hit so I'm fairly confident it might rebound to his Minny days if in a new system.

Based purely on face-off totals, it seems like he hasn't played much center since the 2015-16. At the very least he hasn't taken enough face-offs to rank in his team's top four since then anyway.

Sounds like Todd Woodcroft will be leaving as Assistant Coach to pursue an opportunity in the NCAA. Any thoughts who we might see replace him?

Yes, :deadhorse

But if the Jets messed him up, he is messed up. It is a chicken or egg argument and can't ever be known. I suspect the problem lies on both sides. He failed to adapt to give coaches what they wanted. That's on him. They failed to set him up to succeed, wanting him to first prove he could be something he was not. That's on them.

It may be that a stronger work ethic would have led him to improve his foot speed in off-season training. Or he may have done that but still never been set up to succeed. In his limited time with skilled linemates, he performed well. With plugs, slugs and grinders, he did not.

He may still do very well in Europe somewhere.

I think the possibility is interesting. Could be a chance to buy low. But I really don't know the player well enough to have a valid assessment.

Also, Blues are really tight for cap space. They'll need to move out cap if they plan to re-sign Pietrangelo.

Blues re-signed Scandella for 4 x $3.275M.

Good comparable for DeMelo. Evolving Hockey projected Scandella to make about 200K more than DeMelo on a 4-yr deal, so something in the 4x3.2M seems about right for DeMelo.

I would be happy with that. I wonder if DD is looking for a term like that so he can get another deal at 30ish, or if he want to try for more security and a long term deal.

Also have to wonder if some players want to take shorter deals while the cap possible stagnates and hope the cap is back up when their next deal is up.

Very weird they’re doing anything right now. Armstrong only fares to benefit by waiting out an announcement that the cap remains flat. Unless he has a trade already lined up and is showing good faith to the counter party?

I doubt anyone takes the Steen contract. Jake Allen is a hard contract to move, too. The Blues are in a bind and Pietrangelo could be available.
Alternatively, Dunn could be had for cheap if they’re really scrambling to keep Pietrangelo.

Dunn would cost plenty in a trade. I'm not really sure what their plans are, having signed Faulk to a long term deal, and now Scandella. They'll struggle to pay Pietrangelo if the cap is flat for a year or two. Parayko is going to need a monster deal in 2022. Also, hard to see how they protect Dunn and their 3 big RHD in the expansion draft.

Would we have enough room to take a contract in exchange for their 1st this year? I would love to see Chevy make a move like that to nab a few extra picks or prospects to help restock the cupboards.

edit, should have kept reading lol

A rebuilding team like Detroit could probably take Allen, a deal akin to what the Jets had to with Mason. Only have Bernier signed at 3m next year. Will there be compliance buy outs if the cap goes down?
