2 reasons IMO:
1. Jets window is now. Stone isnt just valuable by himself, he's a driver and makes players around him better. Also being from WPG, there is a * chance* we can resign him
2. (Most Importantly IMO). The Jets great track record of drafting makes me confident they can mitigate the assets lost (picks and prospects) by drafting well after the first round.
Neither of those things explain why the Jets should be the only franchise in years to pay that price for a rental. Ladd was a great player as well, did anyone give us their A-prospect for him? No. The Jets tried to get Hartman, Schmaltz or Teravainen but ended up with Marko Dano. Blackhawks' window was also at that time as well.
Number 2 is an extremely dangerous attitude to have, most NHL scouts will tell you about the high amount of variance in the players available after the first 2 rounds. Relying on your scouts to fix your assets situation by "out-scouting" the league in later rounds is more hope than a plan. While I haven't done a lot of research into it but I am pretty sure the Jets record outside the first round is not significantly better than league average.
