2 reasons IMO:

1. Jets window is now. Stone isnt just valuable by himself, he's a driver and makes players around him better. Also being from WPG, there is a * chance* we can resign him

2. (Most Importantly IMO). The Jets great track record of drafting makes me confident they can mitigate the assets lost (picks and prospects) by drafting well after the first round.

Neither of those things explain why the Jets should be the only franchise in years to pay that price for a rental. Ladd was a great player as well, did anyone give us their A-prospect for him? No. The Jets tried to get Hartman, Schmaltz or Teravainen but ended up with Marko Dano. Blackhawks' window was also at that time as well.

Number 2 is an extremely dangerous attitude to have, most NHL scouts will tell you about the high amount of variance in the players available after the first 2 rounds. Relying on your scouts to fix your assets situation by "out-scouting" the league in later rounds is more hope than a plan. While I haven't done a lot of research into it but I am pretty sure the Jets record outside the first round is not significantly better than league average.

The most I would offer for Stone is the 2019 1st, 2020 4th, Petan, MP and one of Comrie/Harkins/Dano/Nogier.
I'd still go after Staal though.

Why do you want to so badly overpay with more than what all the rentals have gone for this year and in the last several years? According the all reports none of the others in chase for Stone have made their A prospects available, why should the Jets?
It’s not overpaying, it’s what the market is for Stone rn. Maybe I’m overestimating what Dorian can pull off. But if he knows how good Stone is and knows what top end talent is left, that’s the price that what needs to be paid.

He is better or on par with Wheeler in my opinion. We are all Jets fans but think of what we would be asking in this same situation for Wheeler.
Regardless, a 1st plus Ves might be an overpayment for him as a rental, but that’s the highest I’m saying I’ll go. I’m hoping Chevy starts much lower.

And the other 1st is only conditional if he resigns

Staal has a no move and several insiders have indicated that it is made up of all of the contenders because he doesn't want to be traded.
Not sure if that makes sense or not because someone like the Avs, for example, might want to trade for him?
He has a 10 team no trade list.

I'd love to see Staal with Wheeler on his wing.
Stone Staal Wheeler
or
Ehlers Staal Wheeler

I still don't see much upside in Stanley. He is a 10 point player in the AHL this year and likely has ceiling that is a bit higher than Chariot, I personally don't want a big time rental but I would have no issue trading Stanley in a package.

Maybe Stanley is better than some of us think, but he is still behind Niku and Samberg and we have a couple of other prospects showing promise.

What Stanley has done is just enough to give him significant trade value.

I'm leaning towards to this year being the one we should go all in like Columbus.. Doing fairly well already and still to add (hopefully) Big Buff. Adding a solid forward like Stone to top 6 could take us all the way

If we somehow get Stone he would instantly become a fan favorite being from Winnipeg and the way the guy plays balls out all the time . Like Tanev but with way more skill , i also think it wouldn't be hard to re-sign him . Laine , Scheif and Stone #1 Connor , Little and Ehlers #2 Tanev , Lowry and Wheeler #3 .

I'll go out on a limb and say, in order...
Isles
Jets
Flames
Take the isles off the Stone list.

They were unwilling to fill their biggest need ( Duchene), by dealing a 1st+ 2 B prospects + conditional 1st.
Very unlikely they give up a 1st+ 2 A prospects + conditional 1st to rent Stone.
I expect a trade for one of the 2nd tier forwards....Brassard,Hoffman,Zucker,Staal,Nyquist, Henrique.
Hayes is a long shot. Not often bitter rivals make trades.

I’m really intrigued by all this trade talk on the Jets front, but why are we not talking more about or hearing about any potential upgrades to the defense?

If Chevy and the Jets are truly all in wouldn’t there be a pick up for the blue line as well? They are far from perfect there and could use an upgrade at #4 lhd

Potential candidates???? Trying to identify some smart low key additions ala Washington that won’t cost an exorbitant amount.

The problem with the defence rentals is that Jensen will almost certainly end up being the best rental defenceman.

Elder is a better player, but is very unlikely to be moved. Kronwall isn't going to be moved either, and to be honest, he may not be any better than Jensen right now.

After that, the best guy more/less certain to be moved is McQuaid. And McQuaid doesn't crack a (healthy) Jets roster, and may not even be the next man up if there was an injury.

If Jensen played the left side, he would have been a nice addition for sure, but on the right side his impact would be pretty minimal.

When did Hayes become good? A month ago?
Not trolling here (I have posted before), but, really? Is this a serious post? One month?

Okay, he is no McDavid, Scheifele, Ovechkin etc. Hayes has had a decent career thus far, and has been exceptional in this contract year. Some may say it is because of that (who knows?) But, believe a light has flickered on. He has always been a very good PKer, drives play with his uncanny stickhandling and big body. Anyway, He really is a solid 200 ft. player now, and EVERY PO TEAM, could use a player like that, even the Jets.
Having him on the 3rd line would be a LUXURY, believe me.
He's a 1st/2nd liner on any given day though.

On edit.......not to worry though, pretty sure Calgary is HOT for him, but that needn't worry the Jets, right?

conditional 2nd and 3rd.

Yeah, if the Jets make that deal it means their 1st (and the 2020 1st) is out of play for this deadline.

So making that deal for Zuccarello essentially removes the Jets from any further deadline moves.

To be honest, it was a smart offer from Dallas.

I'd guess that most of the teams they were bidding against for Zuccarello viewed him as someone they could go after if they miss out on Stone (and Panarin, to the extent CBJ are still willing to discuss him).

No team still holding on for Stone (or any other rental where a 1st is involved) could match the Stars's offer right now.

So I give credit, savvy move on their part.

How is Stanley behind Samberg? There's no chance.

Samberg hasn't played a second of pro hockey.

Stanley is a big ticket item, why do you think all these teams are rumoured to want him?

Why are the Rangers in such a hurry to get rid of him then?

Samberg is well ahead of Stanley. He was a top 4 d-man for the USA the last 2 WJC, Stanley didn't even get an invite to the Canada camp when he was eligible. He is developing very nicely in the NCAA. I'm guessing that Chevy has clearly made it known he is off the table.
