Last year the market for scoring wingers dried up before Holland could get his hands on one. $1M left just burning a hole in our wallet.

Makes me thing maybe we should get a bit urgent on the already thin, nearly non-existent market for RHDs.
This is exactly what I've been saying. If the available Dmen are gone by the deadline, we will literally have to overpay in order to hopefully acquire a Dman a team does not want to give up

I would have liked that nashvile d
Lots of risk with that Contract.

Well, thus far the guys that have moved aren't the fit for us. I do worry about what Vancouver is cooking up though, they are looking for the same thing we are. Except they want it on the Left Side, but we are looking for a Left side playing the right side so its the same pool of available players.

I always find the pool of available players decreases as the deadline gets closer and more teams fall out of contention.

Just think, if Holland would have been smart enough to make a trade earlier in the year before Ekholm was available, we could have gotten Edmundson instead. Huge miss there.

I'm surprised there was no bitching about Carrier getting moved since a lot of people wanted him.

IMO people should only bitch about trades where they were willing to put up a better offer than the team that landed him, like I could see us putting up a better offer than Barron to land Carrier, but with respect to the Borgen trade we don't have the equivalent of a Kakko to part with to win that bidding war.

Like I wanted Jiricek, but I did no bitching after the fact cause I wasn't willing to 1 up the offer Minny put on the table.

You mean the guy who works for the team that employs Matt Murray says he likes him?

You expecting him to come out and say he doesnt?
Do you think its that simple. Read the article. Korn likely has 12 to 15 criteria that he likely ranks from one to ten. Right now he saying Murray has responded well to the 'programming' side of things ...that the athleticism was always there. Do you think Mitch didn't have a hand in who they picked in the summer?

Sensical approach. Yeh, can't really complain if the price comes out, and it doesn't make sense for us.

We'll never live that mistake down. Lol.

Nashville has not been the same since the Ekholm deal
That sure didn't turn out well for them. Barrie didn't fit their style at all and was basically in the dog house shortly after he arrived.
Schaefer is slow to develop ...if at all. Though i really like the bullet speed of Tanner.

I think today's trade means montreal has a trade in place for Mattieson

Just finished catching up on all the posts in this thread today and wow we're their some weird takes.

For starters why are all upset that we didn't trade for Kakko? Who is going out the other way? With Arvidsson and Kane coming back into the lineup at some point we already have too many wingers and that doesn't even factor in how well Kapanen has been playing. Keep in mind Kakko is making 2.4M and has arbitration rights.

Also, why do fans want Borgen? He's not good. He has some of the worst analytics among all dmen and the rangers took on his full 2.7M contract.

I would love Matheson on the Oilers. He's an exceptional skater and would fit in well under coffeys system. Our dmen don't sit back and defend the net, they make plays and push the pace of the game. He can play both sides and in all situations.

I don't get all the hate from fans. Is it the acquisition cost? I dont think the cost will be as much as fans think. The warts he does have will keep the cost down which is necessary because the Oilers can't afford to outbid other teams.

The value I really see with Matheson is that he still has an extra year on his contract and at 50% that's only 2.44M against the cap. So if Kulak and Matheson are splitting time he brings value in either spot. The Oilers can't afford to bring in another high price defenceman into the mix with Draisaitl getting his increase and Bouchard getting his.

Keep in mind that playoff rosters aren't the same as regular season rosters. Having Matheson on the bottom pair is a competitive advantage. Sure it might be a luxury but it's not stopping the Oilers from making other moves. Oilers don't need to go after the big name that's going to command a stupid amount of money.

Also everyone on here is complaining that we lost Broberg but Matheson is a better version of broberg thats also cheaper against the cap.

For me Mattiesin is the shiny toy we want for Xmas think it is better than he is. Montreal is doing the pump and dump like Sharks tried with Karlsson two seasons ago.

For me Mattieson is like Justin Schultz, Tyson Berrie and a few other guys where we forget just how much of a liability they are on the ice. We already have bouchard giving us headaches

You make a good case. Out of the available options hes in the lead for me. Assuming Provorov is Vegas bound.

He can move the puck, he can skate, he can make plays in the o-zone. He does need to keep under control though, there’s a reason Habs fans dislike him and he can be mistake prone trying to much. Matheson is probably the play here, unless EK65 shakes loose. Then throw Matheson in the trash and go all in for EK65.

Another Dman taken off the board. Meanwhile Bowman is standing pat and doing nothing
As he should. Let's accure some cap space and wait closer to deadline to see if injuries create a larger hole than what we have present.
Cannot afford to error here

Remember Barrie was a toss in. Reid Svheffer and the 1st were the key for Nashville. Scheffer is doing good in the AHL and Tanner Molendyk is a pt per person in his last year of JR

Feels like none of the guys who have moved are an appreciable upgrade over what Kulak is providing right now or just aren’t the right fit. Like Fowler I think is a prime candidate to bounce back, but I don’t think he has any experience on the right side. Also would have been nearly impossible to make him fit.

And then otherwise, for me, it’s just a bunch of mid tier guys who wouldn’t move the needle for us in a meaningful way.

Personally I think the Oilers top priority should be having at least one average goaltender as currently they have 2 below average tenders even though both Skinner and Pickard have been playing better as of late.

It has to be frustrating when the team plays solid D in most games yet gives back a large chunk of that advantage because of less than average goaltending.

I do realize it's easier said than done to get a better than average goalie on this team but honestly that's probably the 1 move that would make the biggest impact.

If they aren't willing to do that... then next priority imo should be improving the team's shooting percentage... ie getting better finish on this team.

They have the most High danger shots/60 of any NHL team... 3rd in Medium danger shots/60... 5th in Low danger shots/60. They are generating chances out the wahoo... but they can't finish well.

13th in High danger shooting pct... 29th in Medium danger shooting pct... 20th in Low danger shooting pct. 21st in overall shooting pct with 10.14%.

If they could have just 1% better finish overall... that would mean an extra 10 GF already as they have over 1000 shots already. 10 extra GF sprinkled over those 31 games would obviously be massive and would likely mean at least a few more wins... they'd likely be near the top of the NHL right now.

Saying all that... over the past 10 games, the Oilers have a shooting pct of 14.01% which is excellent (2nd best only to TB since Nov 22nd).

They also have an excellent save pct since Nov 22nd... 91.87% over that 10 game stretch (2nd only to the Ottawa Senators of all teams).

So signs are definitely pointing upwards and hopefully the offensive finish has truly turned a corner and the goaltending as well is trending towards being at least average again (hopefully).

Still I think goaltending is obviously the area that we can almost unanimously agree is the area that's weakest and 1 decent player brought in can make a huge difference.

Team D has been very good overall (ironically it was even better at the start of the season and is slightly less great in the past 10 games).

The first 11 games of the season the Oilers team defense (based on the quality of their competition) was reducing the expected goals against by an average of .283 GA per game...

...then in next 10 games the Oilers team defense was reducing the expected goals against by .528 GA/game...

...and in the last 10 games the Oilers team defense was reducing the expected goals against by .118 GA/game.

The offensive finish on the team and the goaltending have improved markedly over the last 10 games which has lead to the team having the great run they've been on.

That's why I'd personally lean towards a goalie as the #1 target (as we know how big a factor that can be to have an above average tender). Plus if there's anything left in the asset pile to improve the team... finishing ability could hopefully also be improved... ie a player who can actually snipe... although MAYBE with Arvidsson/Kane coming back that may be helpful as well. Hyman alone regaining some scoring touch is massive as well... so maybe organically this team will elevate that shooting percentage higher and that will take care of itself (again hopefully).

It might seem odd to say that the targets should be:

#1 goalie
#2 sniper

...but I feel overall team D is a strength of the team so I don't know if limited assets should be spent on further improving team defense (although of course ANYTHING that improves the team overall is a good thing).

Kappo traded to Seattle...that was fast after criticism of the coach.
Something is really rotten there.

Who should we target from NYR?

Apparently he hasn't fit into Calgary's style either as he's been a healthy scratch more often than not.
