Where do we sit on Savoie being trade bait at the deadline? Currently 0.5 PPG at the AHL.

This guy could go either way as a prospect.

Mystery trade player Idea: Ryan Pulock from the Islanders

The islanders currently aren’t very good, there middling and need to make a change

On the right side of their defence they have Pulock and Mayfield signed till 2030 and they need to sign Dobson after this year and I feel he will be a priority for them.

Pulock is a good defensife defenceman (leads the islanders in short handed time) but still has a little offence to him.

Makes 6.15 million and is 30 years old.

I have no idea what the package would be but he has always felt like a player who is never talked about but in my opinion should be available because of where the islanders are.

I'd only consider moving him if he's part of a package for a young, cost controlled contributor who will be around for a few years.

The Drai and Bouch extensions will hit hard and we think we need to hope that Savoie takes a big step next season.

It's hard to tell but I bet the team does have a renewed commitment to youth, made more pressing by what we lost over the summer. I'd say there's almost no chance a key prospect moves for a rental. The Kesselring trade also might be a recent lesson they've learned.

Also, I do feel that the only piece we want is that 2nd pair RD. We've steadily added pieces and so there just aren't holes.

I don't think there's any clear 2nd pairing RD that should cost us Akey, Savoie, or O'Reilly

The response there is that maybe we want someone who is costly, and would pass for a top pairing guy. I don't think management will push for that unless we are talking a young player with control. But let's be real. We are talking about Dmen like Risto, Provorov, Borgen tier.

Earlier in the year I was of the opinion that a Skinner trade had zero chance of happening. But as the seasons gone on I’ve had a bit of a change of opinion. All the NMC means is he’s got full control over any move that could potentially happen. There’s definitely a chance he could just decide he’s riding it out here to break his playoff drought like he came here to do. But if he continues to struggle to adapt to the lineup here and hover around 12-13 minutes a night, maybe even less as the team gets healthier, he might be open to a move to a bubble team looking for a goal scoring punch in their top 6. Because if it gets to the point where he’s playing sub 10 minutes down the stretch and even potentially getting healthy scratched come playoff time it’s going to put him in a pretty brutal place for finding a new team to pay him anything worthwhile next summer. He might take a 20 game tryout getting way more ice time to put some more positive film out there.

That said, I do feel like he’s coming on the last few weeks and has been playing better so hopefully that continues and it’s a non issue.

Honestly I think the odds are low that's Skinners traded, even if he doesn't have an obvious home in the lineup/top9. We saw in the finals how banged up the team ended up being. And although Holloway did well to fill in, they just didn't have the horses in step in once Kane was out and Drai's hand/back was f**ked.

I don't see the team being willing to take that risk again, and will keep Skinner as a break-glass-in-case-of-emergency wildcard.

Doubtful we see a trade before the new year.

Team is rolling right now, very strong defensively, goaltending is going and the scoring and depth scoring is starting to come.

They’d be pretty foolish to rush a trade right now.
Friedman did say that, if the Dman they want can be obtained right away, they will not hesitate to pull the trigger

I’m starting to think the best move might be to trade for the best centre you can get. I’m sure it will be a replacement for Stecher, but imagine adding another top six centre to the mix using this years second and a first, and bumping Ryan out of the lineup. The forward group would be absolutely stacked.

In my opinion, a 4C is not that hard to obtain. But I think we should all realize that every team that won the Cup in the last 3-4 years has had an amazing top 6 on defence. All we need is one #4 Dman who can move the puck and we are golden. If we can pull that off, our D core is the best it has ever been in so so long.

Ekholm Bouchard
Nurse #4 Dman
Kulak Emberson
Stecher

I’m sorry, but what? You have Mcdavid, Drai, RNH, Henrique, not including Ryan. It’s nice to have depth, but why in the world would you use another 1st and 2nd to upgrade centre?

Defence, specifically RHD should be the top priority. Shut down RHD being more would be preferred. We do not need another “top 6 centre” unless we come across longterm injuries. It’d a waste of draft capital and a waste of cap space. Neither of which we can afford to lose.

Trade for a RHD with cap friendly term. Or an upgrade in goal, if the right deal comes along. Bad take.
I really don't think people aren't taking injuries into account. If one of our top 3 is injured, we have no depth to help fix that spot

There is absolutely zero chance that we make a trade before the TDL. They will wait until deadline day. If they didn't panic and pull the trigger when we had a bad start, no way they will when we are a top 10 team.

This isn't hang back and watch Holland, I don't like Stan, but he hasn't sat on his hands.

It will be if the right deal comes up, I could absolutely expect something well before the deadline

I don’t doubt that if there is a guy near the top of their list who’s available that they won’t hesitate but I’m not sure if that deal is there this early in the season.

I think they have done a really great job with how they’ve approached the situation, cycling a few different style of players into that spot next to Nurse and now they probably have a very good idea of what type of player the coaching staff wants on that pairing. Now the coaching and scouting staff can put a list of targets together so that management can start making their calls on these guys.

If they can add a really solid #4 who compliments Nurse this D core is going to be solid and with some great depth.

My thinking is that if the defence is performing at a high level, you might not want to mess with the mix unless the right player comes along.

If you think Nuge is now a winger, and Henrique is basically a shutdown defensive centre, then adding another good centre gives you more options up front, and in case of injury. It opens up playing Draisaitl with McDavid and keeping Nuge on the wing when they make that adjustment. Also, if Podkolzin and Kapanen stick on Draisaitl's line, it could give you someone to play with Kane against soft competition.

My preference would be a top-4 d signed with term, but if that's not available, I think adding a good centre with that cap space could be an option.

The 0.5PPG needs context. Condors are ranked near dead last in offence in the AHL. Let's not sound the alarm bells yet.

Will Borgen @50%

Cam Talbot @500k retained

Would be the two adds I would like to make.

I mean are there "sexier" names out there? Sure, but factoring in cost of acquisition, there's not much better.

Why do we need Cam Talbot

Because even Skinner's biggest backers will admit he is up and down and needs a better 1A/B to push him.

You worry about a D injury, what would happen if Skinner gets hurt?

The Oilers would be left with Pickard having to basically play all the rest of the games and Rodrigue not only has 0 NHL playoff experience, he has 0 NHL experience period. Kid hasn't played even a single period in the NHL. That would be a disaster.

The Oilers were a market taker under Holland. He let the market setting to be done by other teams and waited to utilize his assets and cap space. I'm not sure Holland really utilized the waiver wire in season to trial players.

Hard to say what Jackson Bowman will do. They have dipped into the waiver wire early though their reactive fallback off season & injuries has given cap space to tinker. They also quickly moved off Emberson as a 2RD and signed Dermott over starting Stetcher. Knoblauch moving Kulak into key situational 2RD ice time has covered the difficult mid pair responsibilities and toi. Should be zero surprise to hear them active in trade discussions for a d-upgrade but their successful experiment with Kulak and even Nurse at 2RD give them flexibility with the scarcity and price premium involved with a competitive market for quality right shot veteran d-men.

With the team stabilizing their own zone team defending structure and effort and with that goaltending improving as well I'd be surprised if Jackson Bowman move this early to beat the trade deadline market. The trade scuttlebutt is ongoing because GM's are generally always talking and ruminating on scenarios to improve their teams. Don't believe it necessarily correlates into action (especially when teams are going well and even in the Oilers case last year Holland avoided a reactive move on goaltending despite lots of trade smoke aka discussions).

Agree with you that Stanley Cup model blue lines are big, multi-skilled, and deep. Think there's enough tells with this team's roster and deployment usage to believe they will be looking for a defense upgrade to complete their blueline top 4/5.

I really have to check out this Will Borgen dude. His stats look horrific this season. What is everyone seeing out of him 2 years ago before this huge drop off?

Question: Could the above have gone on until infinity until one team just quits?

No, not unless another team put a claim in for him when Vegas claimed him the second time. It was a smart move by Vegas, they basically either get a prospect for nothing or he goes back to Edmonton, no downside.

Luckily for Edmonton, Lavoie's time as a viable prospect seems to be winding down.

I just find the whole thing silly and more dirty pool from the Knights.

The Waivers system is designed so that if you aren't going to use a player in an NHL role, another team has the right to use that player in an NHL role. It's designed to advantage the player and give a player an NHL shot. But what the Knights did here is do the exact same thing the Oilers were going to do, put him in the AHL.
