I'm not sure why some people think looking at spreadsheet data in isolation drives decision making for NHL teams. There's substantive film work done to breakdown team play in all situation that helps to contextualize team systems, team and individual performance, that can be evaluated against and in consideration of statistical pattern based information gathered (which is more sophisticated and deeper than public modelling). You’ve basically just expanded on what I was saying though. There’s waaay more that goes into it than is publicly available, and the org will have to look into all of that data. But what the clip does do is show a peek behind the curtains on some of those numbers and that it isn’t necessarily a slam dunk that Gibson would be this monumental improvement on what’s here like a lot of people in this thread are saying. Of course he’s also got the best aspects to his game that would counteract the negative shown here, but it’s a matter of by how much.
The macro level of chance based pattern metric like expected goals for and against get dissected as single events by coaching staffs to assess and evaluate the root causes involved. Did their systems fail or hold up? Were there contributory mistakes or plays involved? What are the corrective measures to mitigate future issues or positive changes to produce results? Deep dives through film help to define more clearly and cut through assumptions (and prospective false conclusions) possibly showing through patterns with macro level data.
