Rumor: Rumors & Proposals Thread | With Klingberg in the Mix Who Are Our 7D After the Deadline?

You’ve basically just expanded on what I was saying though. There’s waaay more that goes into it than is publicly available, and the org will have to look into all of that data. But what the clip does do is show a peek behind the curtains on some of those numbers and that it isn’t necessarily a slam dunk that Gibson would be this monumental improvement on what’s here like a lot of people in this thread are saying. Of course he’s also got the best aspects to his game that would counteract the negative shown here, but it’s a matter of by how much.
I'm not sure why some people think looking at spreadsheet data in isolation drives decision making for NHL teams. There's substantive film work done to breakdown team play in all situation that helps to contextualize team systems, team and individual performance, that can be evaluated against and in consideration of statistical pattern based information gathered (which is more sophisticated and deeper than public modelling).

The macro level of chance based pattern metric like expected goals for and against get dissected as single events by coaching staffs to assess and evaluate the root causes involved. Did their systems fail or hold up? Were there contributory mistakes or plays involved? What are the corrective measures to mitigate future issues or positive changes to produce results? Deep dives through film help to define more clearly and cut through assumptions (and prospective false conclusions) possibly showing through patterns with macro level data.

I don't even hate the guy but he just isn't good enough to be a consistent NHL starter. Though I think he functions fine as a back up.

This is what makes Anaheim such a good trade partner IMO. Skinner doesn't need to be the starter there, they have Dostal for that. OTOH, they have zerrrrro good goalie prospects beyond that. Their closest is a 21-year-old with a 2.92 GAA in the AHL. Everyone else has comically bad numbers no matter what league they're in or how old they are.

Dostal + Skinner has the potential to be a very good tandem for a lot of years and maybe under a different goalie coach Stu finds another level. Gibson doesn't help them address the future, and will go back to being a boat anchor of a contract if this season turns out to be a mirage for him. So why not flip him for picks and a younger backup-type if you can? It's a no brainer for both sides.

I said I'd answer to a mod.

Give HFOil their answer, or the baby crib get's it. This ain't our first Baby Crib that get's it either. Won't be the last.

Look at the breakdown from the video a few pages back. Facing the same quality shots Gibson might actually have allowed more goals against than Stu this year. They have similar weaknesses
The Oilers are basically in and around top 5 defensively across the board in the entirety of the League. The Ducks are far from it. Gibson has a .915% while Skinner is hardly .900%. That there alone is a few more wins.

I'm all onboard the get a goalie train.
The problem is... I'm not sure Gibson is good. He's had giant stretches now of just... not being very good. He never seems to really outplay the goalies on his own team.

This feels like Jack Campbell all over again.
Buying cause he's the only thing available... and praying it works.

Watch the video. It talks about the type of shots Stu faces here, and how Gibson does with those types of shots.

It's cherry picking Gibson's the two weakest categories, I'd venture if they did a full breakdown of everything, Gibson would come out significantly ahead. You don't magically get that far ahead in save percentage and GSAA.

Gregor is a big time Skinner apologist too.

Gibson is very good from a technical standpoint. In particular, he controls his movements very well and can cover a lot of ice quickly. He is in a different class than Skinner on the technical side of things.

To me, his struggles seem more mental than anything. But when he's on his game, he's a top 10 goaltender in the league. The question is whether playing for a competitive team re-sets his mind and clears out the crud that has been building over 7 years of playing on a horrific team. At a certain point for a goalie, losing that consistently has to have an affect on his game.

Outstanding lateral quickness too. Good glove hand.

I have a reliable NHL source who thinks slight upgrade at best.
Oh cmon. You can interview 10 scouts and get completely different answers. I've been around so many scouts that have completely different opinions on everything. I don't know goaltending at all, but I do know that Skinner has way too many instances where he lets in weak goals. When he's on he is fine, but that's the gamble.

Can Vegas fit Marchand in if Karlsson isn't on LTIR? And if not, will Vegas' discussion with Boston before inevitably announcing that Karlsson will be injured until game 1 of the playoffs be used as evidence of their contravention of the cap? (Who am I kidding.)
We all know that Karlsson will be on LTIR, just a matter of picking the ailment, and that the Bruins will basically just give them Marchant for peanuts.
