Because Emberson is the perfect 6th D right now. Upgrading that position would just be wasting assets for very little reward

You’re probably right, I don’t know the benefits of a signing bonus v performance bonus- I spent all
My time learning LTIR…lol
Yes but if Klingberg looks good with Nurse, why wouldn't you go grab another legit top four to play with Kulak, pushing Emberson to the #7 d? Then you're deeper, have more options for the bottom four pairings, and the defence improves overall. When you're defending a lead, you can play the acquisition with Nurse, or you could have an elite bottom pairing and an improved PK.

Just hypothetically speaking... if Drai had waited to sign his contract and signed after this year, do you think he could have gotten more that $14.5 million after this MVP season he is having?

Yep. Significantly more.

But that's more to do with timing than with what Edmonton would be willing to offer him which was already pretty close to whatever he wanted. The Salary cap is going to go up by 20M over the next 2-3 seasons and player salaries are going to rise with it.

Like his complete inability to play defense?

If this is the only addition to the defense we see then it's a failure of management.
Ummm yes… he admitted himself his injury was preventing him from playing the defensive side of the game properly. His hip was affecting his skating. He could no longer gap up on guys so had to give up space to play safe. Then guys could enter the zone too easy. It remains to be seen if he is fixed up and can play up to his older standard. But yes. The injury prevented him from playing defence.

This is the worst take I have EVER heard on signing a free player. Even if he does nothing and we waive him, there is like... zero risk. On the other hand, if he emerges as a solid puck moving #5/6, it is a win. If he ends up being even more - it is a freaking steal.

You are delusional.

I think the other thing people need to realize is that the RD market is terrible. Even if we are willing to spend the assets, and have cap space, we still might not be able to even acquire a RD who makes any type of difference.

The names I see on available trade lists is terrible. Prororov and Matheson are only guys I see who I might like. Both are LD and still have flaws in their game. And doesn’t sound like Prororov is available.

I am hoping someone becomes available who we arent expecting but its still slim pickings.

Hopefully Klingberg is better than expected. I’d rather not bother with Savard, Risto etc

But Klingberg was never a great defender even at his peak. This is just a signing that makes no sense and has very little realistic chance of paying off big.

Unfortunately it also fits the larger pattern of Bowman not wanting/bothering to offer actual assets for actual solutions. He's been a massive disappointment thus far outside the Podkolzin acquisition, you can't be just trading 3rd/4ths or pillaging waivers at this point in our competitive window. You have to go all-in.
I’m not completely happy with Bowman. The Skinner deal with a NMC was brutal. But Emberson was a great trade. And Kapanen was a good pick up too. Podz isn’t his only good move.

Bowman didn’t sign Skinner. Can’t even really blame him for the offer sheets because its mostly on Jackson.

Am curious what Bowman actually does at the deadline though.

To be fair, that was Jeff Jackson, Bowman wasn’t here for the start of free agency. The other moves are Bowman. Solid track record of small but impactful moves so far

The Skinner deal was a free agent frenzy JJ move. Most of us at the time were willing to let JJ impregnate our wives after what he did around that time.

Apparently being a racist POS and a horrible teammate is just fine as long as you are clean shaven.
Clean shaven with a buzz cut for that classic 1950's racist look.

Even if he wasn't I can't imagine either of those guys liking a player like this. Already seeing people talk about how "Roy will be able to reign him in" when even Tortorella couldn't.

But also yes I'm not surprised that a 200 year old dude thinks having a beard says more about somebody's character than... saying slurs and fighting teammates.

Why in the world would you want Emberson as a #7? The guy is a grade A bottom pair right now. Defends well, skates well, moves the puck well and is extremely physical . He is the ptototype of what you want in a bottom guy and especially for playoffs

So send Philp "down" then they have space right?
Philp is a million dollars. They wouldn’t have room. But what would that accomplish? They can send him down and not add LTIR and can accrue space again.

Because another top 4 will cost assets and cap and the Oilers have other needs. There is only so much ice time to go around as well. Also- Emberson has been really good in the role- you aren’t adding much benefit.

I completely agree. It is an interesting experiment. I just can't believe how salty people are. Like.. if we signed him for 4 million or something, sure, but 1.75 is nothing. If he can give us 75% of what he was before the hips got too bad to play, its a win. I also think that even if his skating is sub par, he will give us more that Stetcher is...
His hips gave him a small issue throughout his time in Dallas and then when he went to Anaheim it got very bad. Too the point where he couldn’t skate backwards as good.

Now all that pain and problems are gone. So he may come back rejuvenated and back to being a top 4
