Rumor: Rumors & Proposals Thread | With Klingberg in the Mix Who Are Our 7D After the Deadline?

A middle six winger who scored 26 last year for the right price? Sure, why not? That is much different than hoping a 32 year old offensive defender coming off a major surgery can be a #4D three years after they last looked anything like one.

If anything that should tell you I don't hate on every move this team makes (if they hypothetically did it, that is). That is much different than the folks who blindly give a pass to everything our FO does.
The defenseman is really no gamble though, as his cap hit can be fully buried in the minors if he crashes and burns. If he plays well, we get a good asset for only the dollars on his contract. Now, if he doesn't play well, and the FO doesn't find another alternative, then yes, it was a bad move.

We could easily replicate or do worse than the 2008 crisis, and the only reason there was a 100k “increase” in the cap that year is that they used the 5% escalator clause - revenues did shrink and the “real effective” salary of players (when factoring in inflation) did decrease. This was after a similar run of massive % increases year-over-year. While I do suspect that the baked-in increases due to covid recapture will similarly prevent a decrease even in a very bad scenario for the economy, the increases (and the gigantic rumoured rights deals in the wake of a hypothetical economic cataclysm) are very much still in question. Some GM’s are choosing to operate conservatively given the circumstances.
Revenues did not shrink. The 5% escalator clause was used in previous years as well. It was pretty much automatic until much more recently when the NHLPA wanted to damp down escrow.

The 2008 financial crisis was by far the worst structural issue of my life. There was a significant risk of a complete collapse of the world financial system, and it was not exactly a surprise to a lot of people. It is true that if there is some economic cataclysm things could change. But if that happens the NHL salary cap will not be the major worry for most of us. At this point though it's pretty hard to see why an NHL GM would hesitate in signing any player because of some unseen Black Swan event.

Hard to see Saad coming here with JSkinner on the roster. I don’t watch him enough to know if he would help at all.

But makes me wonder with Skinner if he would ever terminate his deal to sign a league minimum on another contender.

I don’t think we would be able to trade him to another contender at $3m very easily even if he was willing to waive.

Its an interesting thought. I assume hes already been paid about 1.5$ in real dollars. Getting another $1m deal wouldn’t be hurting him too bad in terms of real dollars.

Unlikely though.

Bowman's thing is trading for Saad not signing him, so I'm predicting a sign and trade where Saad signs for like $1M somewhere else and then gets traded to the Oilers at 50%.

( :sarcasm: maybe)

Really? He's cooked at $4.5M on the cap, at a $1M, there's still a solid player there.

The Blues do weird things.

Yes, cooked. He’s the exact same player as Jeff Skinner who can’t get into this lineup every night. They might look a little different out there skating on the ice, but they are all offense no defense wingers whose offense has evaporated. Right down to the “oh look he scored 25 goals last year”

?? So you're just kind of guessing then. He's a two-way player and always has been.

At $1M or less, I have time for it.

Saad has never been a good two-way player. It was a reputation he earned as a rookie on a stacked Chicago team that won a Stanley cup. This isn’t a decade ago anymore. He’s essentially Mike Hoffman.

I mean ok I guess. It's fine to not like the player, but we don't have to invent stuff.

I agree with this, his defensive game was always overrated.

Though for $1M could be a decent gamble. I think he may get paid more elsewhere though

He’s been fine defensively in his career. I’m actually shocked you’re comparing his defensive game to Skinners.

I would rather spend the money on 2 up and coming players at $5-$6 mill than blow our load on Mikko.

Or maybe Crosby can demand a trade out of that shit show to Edmonton. ;)

I doubt Saad is cooked. He's probably tired of playing for St. Louis hence why he agreed to terminate the contract and leaving 4.5M on the table

Grubauer on waivers means Gibson price gets lower

Why would Gibson price go down? I see it like his price goes up because not alot of good goalies are available?

I have no idea if this has any validity or not - but I wonder if Holloway's performance pushes Saad's minutes/offensive opportunities down?

He could be the same guy, but just not getting the same looks. Just a guess though.

It's more Neighbours and Bolduc that were rotating with Saad.
