There is a misconception that the 80s were some rough and tough hockey. 80s were the highest scoring decade of hockey. This generation is way more physical. I love the circular logic of those who think the 80s were some WWE league

“In the 80s, you couldn’t take liberties with players because you would get tuned in”

The most obvious retort that I never get a response to “if everyone was so scared- how was it more physical?”
This generation is way more physical? You have to be joking right?
Good grief man, Beukeboom could rack up 4 hits in one period. Small guys like Chris Nilan were running anything that moved and there were like ten Euros in the whole league.
To answer your last question, no one was ‘scared’ they were mostly Canadian boys who played by a code. Helmets weren’t mandatory and if you crossed the line with a stick or elbow you had your number taken. You should go back and watch a battle of Quebec before posting such nonsense.

That's fair but the practice lines today were nuge-ryan-hyman and pod-drai-savoie. Ryan's just a placeholder and Skinners playing in the bottom 6 again. It's very likely that those are the lines Knoblauch will want to see against the flyers.
Maybe Savoie is a placeholder for a potential top 6 winger add? We get a look how Arvy looks in the bottom 6?

Honestly who the heck knows at this point. So many weird line combos. I do know Bowman said a few weeks back they need to decide if Nuge is a winger or a center....

just because he starts on one line, doesn't mean he finishes there - Knob moves guys around all the time, and skinner's been a pro a long time, he should know he isn't a main character on this team, he'll act accordingly (and ftr i'm a j skinner supporter, we're better with him rolling than without)

Knoblauch is a great defensive coach but he drives me crazy with some of the juggling he's done. I get that he wants everyone to be familiar with one another but some of his moves have been confusing.

When Hyman was on streak he moved him down to the 3rd line and put Brown in his spot to "spread out the scoring" and reward Brown. Instead it resulted in both guys going cold offensively. He's stapled Arvidsson with Draisaitl for most of the year, despite failing to produce results. He continues to play Henrique in shutdown role but that's never been his MO. Skinner has been in the bottom 6 all year or benched. He put Perry on the top line with McDavid for who knows why.

I just dont like how he's been handling the forwards this year. I guess it's worked when you look at the standings but not when I look at the lines to individual performance. Out of all of our forwards, only Draisaitl, Perry and Brown have been better this year.

With the team how it is currently constructed, Savoie is a really bad fit.
Don't think so.
The team is icing Kapanen, Podkolzin etc in top 6 and McDavid hasn't clicked with anyone yet.
Savoie can literally be a fit at just about any spot on the forwards group.

The issue is figuring out who to sit to make room for him. IMO Kapanen is everything Savoie and then some more at this stage of their careers.

Maybe one of Janmark, Brown or Perry can sit a game or 2.

Kapanen is nothing Savoie and then some lol. We are talking about a kid who was a top 5 pick and played in the OHL from 16 years old.

Its almost like theres been more studies into brain health and concussions.

OHL?

lol- you’re romanticizing a time of hockey. The 80’s was a time of run and gun hockey which was wide open. If it’s was so physical- why were there so many bloody goals and chances?

I grew up on 80’s hockey- it was no where near as physical. There may have been more fights- but the average game play was a fast, no hit contest. What any game from the 80’s- there are varying online methods to do so- it wasn’t some big, rugged rough league

That’s nice, maybe they should abolish boxing and football or how about auto racing? Those guys risk their lives every weekend.
Strawman is strong with you.

None of those sports you mention have a high death rate. lol.

I wonder if calling up Matthew Savoie means Evander Kane is actually out until after the deadline… which means Frank Seravalli may be incorrect
Wouldn't be the first time. He was wrong on Kane's injury/surgery status in the summer as well.

I suspect Sevavralli is hearing from Kane's camp(agent/player etc), and there is a disconnect between the team and player on how they want things to play out. Kane wanted to play through the injury and not get surgery in the summer, and wants to get back playing as soon as possible now. Team wanted him to get surgery back in the summer, and wants him to sit until the playoffs now so they can utilize the cap space at the deadline.

Hopefully Kane backs down and helps the team load up for a cup run.

We will get our shows run physically if our roster remains the same. Weight is nice for board and net front battles as well as fights, but the willingness to throw the body and fight are lacking on our team compared to teams like Minnesota, Calgary, Vegas and Florida.
That was actually my point. Adding beef is not the same as playing physical. Though I am less concerned about this than many. We have seen how players change their approach in the playoffs. And I don't think that the Oilers best players are either intimidated or really impacted all that much by physical play. In fact, with guys like Draisaitl and McDavid I think it gets them pumped.

But isn't it well known that Draisaitl got hurt early in the Vancouver series? They are definitely 2 of the toughest superstars in terms of being durable and taking punishment, but in a perfect world you limit that punishment. If you can't, then you just make sure that the other team's stars get the same or worse rough ride and hope that our guys are able to weather it better (this would be my preference regardless).

Sorry I just have to laugh because of the timing. If the Oilers push Jeff Skinner down to the 3rd line after finally earning a top 6 spot, it's bullshit.

The Oilers could have recalled Savoie to play in the top 6 at any point of the year, especially when we had injuries. If you really want to, put Arvidsson on the 3rd line.

Just pisses me off if your implying that Skinner after finally earning his spot beside Leon should just give it to Savoie. Sure that might be Savoies spot eventually but you dont screw over Jeff Skinner after he does everything the coach has asked of him.
Why exactly would you swap Skinner and savoie when pods hasn't done jack shit playing with Leon for a while

If you listen to Drai's interview yesterday he jokingly said something along the lines of "Podz needs to get me the puck so that I can turn it over". I think that Drai likes playing with him because he called Podz a good forechecker. That said, Skinner should be getting more opportunities with his recent play. Arvidsson on the flip side needs to work his way back into the top 6 IMO. Hopefully Savoie comes in and really shines so that we have 1 less winger to look for at the deadline.
