Rumor: Rumors & Proposals Thread | With Klingberg in the Mix Who Are Our 7D After the Deadline?

With Klingberg now... that's going to be another player in this lineup that we added without giving any assets away. Along with Kapanen, Philp, and E. Kane... that's 4 additions without any subtractions for the playoffs. Pretty good asset management.
Not to mention only giving a 4th for Podkolzin and a 3rd to dump Ceci and get Emberson. The Oilers have done well in the bargain bin, kind of the anti-Holland in that respect.

Not to be negative, but Nurse having 1 good season with Barrie during the bubble year doesn't mean he will be good with Klingberg.

I hope im wrong though.
Nurse has also repaired a lot of his reputation by simply playing away from Ceci or Desharnais. In the playoffs, he looked good with Kulak and Broberg, and a lot of that was just mobility and puck moving, and that goes for Stecher too.

Frankly moving him to any playoff contending team with an open spot would be doing him a favour. His value can't get lower than it is right now, I'm sure he and his agent recognize this.

I haven't been a fan of how Knoblauch has managed Skinner this year. It concerns me that he hasn't really tried to get Skinner going in a top six spot. However, Skinner is also very slow, and I'm open to him just being a bad fit for this team. Still I would've liked to have seen him get an extended look with McDavid and Hyman. I think he would've been a good fit there.
Knoblauch is very big on two way forwards, guys that play both ends of the ice. It's why you've seen long trial runs of Podkolzin and Arvidsson in the top 6 because they're solid two way guys. I don't necessarily agree with the treatment of Skinner but he's just not a good fit in a Knoblauch system which puts a great emphasis on defensive hockey.

It just makes me wonder why he and Jackson weren't on the same page when the signing was made. It seems like Jackson saw an opportunity to get a perennial 30+ goal scorer for relatively cheap while not consulting with his coach.

It’s not like Klingberg was some sort of defensive stalwart before the injury so I’m not sure why some people have their hopes that high.
I think there's some hope for him to be decent.

Looking at Dallas' numbers during his time there, it looks like he suffered from the same thing our second pairing has suffered from over the years. Their top line was by far their best line and Heiskanen got the lion's share of minutes with them. That 5 man unit would have something like a 58% xGF while Klingberg would have a 50% xGF playing with the lesser lines. The WOWYs and Player Cards(tm) would say he was terrible because his relative stats were poor compared to an elite 1st line/1st pairing.

Also people also just look at +/- and it's a mess.

For instance, in 19/20, people will see his near team worst -10 and say he's bad defensively, but really that's only -7 at 5v5 and almost entirely on the offensive side of things because of a low onSH% that saw his GF end up 12 short of his xGF.

Fast forward to 20/21 and people see a -15, but that's only with -4 at 5v5 with a poor on SV% that year.

Then you've got 21/22 with that -28. Almost half that was with an empty net. He was only -14 at 5v5 and he was a plus player with the top6. He played some 30% offensive zone start minutes with Faksa and Raffl where he was -10 that tanked the +/-.

There's little to suggest this, you're kind of navel gazing about presenting it like it's some hard facts. lolz.

Huh? The evidence is that he was traded. Thats cut and dried. This is a binary thing. Was a guy available to be traded? If he was traded, the answer is yes. WTF?

Rishaug says Klingberg is expected to play next game or the one after that.

Can we just get him into a friggin game?
This was so poorly planned you want to see what you have in the player before the deadline and yet he doesn't play until the end of January and 10 days of February is dedicated to a farse tournament than you have like less than three weeks till the deadline.

Fabbro, Carrier, Kovacevic, Blackwood. The moves were there but Bowman and Jackson were too busy scouring waivers and the rehab pile to part with actual assets.
Kovaceivic was traded in the off season when the OS for Broberg had yet to happen.

Carrier was part of the discussions last year I expect but he re-signed for $3.75M. Assuming Kane was going to be back at the end of January or early February, which was the assumption when he was traded. how would you have fit in his $3.75M cap hit. The choice would have been Skinner (not happening with his nmc) or probably Kulak.

Fabbro has a $2.75M contract. With some manipulation it could possibly have been fit in. It would have meant playing with a short roster (probably 20 guys) While he may well have been an improvement over Strecher he's not exactly a high impact guy historically. Had they brought him in that would have potentially been the most significant move that they could have made.

I have commented several times on Blackwood. He has been more inconsistent than Skinner over his career and this was true even when he was in Barrie and when he was in the AHL. After a great start in Colorado his last 4 games have all been sub .900.

He's not a rookie though. They should have a lot of info on him and I suspect that they could get a decent enough picture of how his recovery has gone from practices and 8-9 games. They should get a feel for his mobility which is probably the biggest question mark.

$10 million with the increase in cap would be like Nurse getting $13 million probably. If we can get him for $10 million you take it and run.
I think its more nuanced than that but I get where you are coming from.
Nurse is over paid for what he brings IMO.

Dallas has been one of the better defensive teams in recent history. That system definitely allowed for Klingberg to produce offensively but they werent able to hide hks warts when healthy. Maybe he needs a change of scenery but it's not like he was a product off a poor system for a bad team.

I think you might be missing my point. I wouldn't be surprised if he should be better than what he was with the Leafs (assuming he is healthy).

My concern is that Klingberg was a very polarizing player in Dallas. Klingberg had 115 points in 180 games in his last 3 seasons with Dallas. However, he was also a combined -53 during that time. He's never been a guy who has been known for his defensive play.
I think that its important to understand that these hip issues are not recent. Not just from his Toronto days.
Klingberg has said in multiple interviews that this has been an issue his entire NHL career. So that includes his time in Dallas.
This specifically impaired his ability to skate backwards and especially transition from forwards to backwards and vise versa.
Thats important info to have when trying to use data to get a predictive sense of what Klingberg will be able to bring defenisvely.
So in this specific case those stats dont have a lot of meaning.

How will he do? I am really curious to find out and because he is playing for my team I am hoping that the Oilers get a fully rejuvenated player.
We do know one thing for sure...his offensive IQ and vision are very high. If his D zone coverage is improved (because he can now transition properly) then this team could really have something with this player.

lol why be a defender if you can’t defend? It should not be either/ or
It just seems backwards to me how defensemen who are more like a 4th forward are more coveted or sought after. The job description is right there in the position’s name…defenseman.

A day after a Vegas player pulls out. Pure coincidence I’m sure.

In the fine print, there’ll be clause which states this rule does not apply to players under contract for the Edmonton Oilers.
