I don’t feel confident in Pickard if and when Skinner shits the bed. Especially in the playoffs.
So what's the solution? Forego the defense or the forward upgrade and spend on a goalie that plays what? 8 games for the duration?

I agree that Pickard isn't a favorable starter in that instance. But neither are many of the options that I listed. Mind you, I also see some upside in Bakersfield with Rodrigue who's had another year of positive development. It's not out of the question that he sees some games in Edmonton down the stretch.

No goalie is going to salvage the stats of this team to date other than Skinner, who has historically corrected in the second half. If there's an 'upgrade' in the cards, it's a last hour type trade for a veteran like Reimer, Quick or whomever for a late pick. Statistically that's not an upgrade.

I’d actually take Reimer, Quick, or whomever over Pickard actually

If Klingberg somewhat works out I would put our assets towards a forward that can put the puck in the net. (if stretcher is #7 we are set)

We are a good team that controls possession and plays good team defence. Mcdavid being out shows that we really need some depth scoring on this team more than anything. More pucks in the net

*goaltending aside because I think it's not going to happen*

Oilers management isn’t gonna do shit about goaltending because they’re too stupid to figure anything out there.

No team in the league has a sadder sack of makeshift crap in net than the Oilers the last ten years and running, even Buffalo has had better.

Cam Talbot 2016 is as good as it gets, might as well roll the dice and bring him back.

They already struggle to get Skinner any looks and have Kane coming back too, so a top 9 forward really isn't a need.
And 1 through 6, I generally think the defence has performed well this year. (I'm also curious to see what Klingberg adds to the bottom of the group.)

It's been goaltending that has been their Achilles heel most often this year. So yes, that is where they should be upgrading over forward or defence.

Gibson, Vejmalka/Ingram, Varlamov, hell I'm nearing a point I would take a risk on Jarry at 50%.
Plus it's not like there are a lot of teams in the goalie market at the moment, so prices shouldn't be outrageous.

I’d rather that so this team doesn’t go into the postseason with the current tandem. Skinner can be Jekyll and Hyde. Pickard isn’t the solution either so lol
The Oilers will go into the postseason with those two. This management seems oddly proud how little they invest in the most important position in hockey.

They're not going to trade for a goalie, it's a waste of energy hoping for it to happen. All reports indicate that management are very happy with the goaltending tandem and don't see it as an issue.

I get the practical reasons why they're committed to Skinner. As up and down as he is a convincing upgrade on him isn't simple or cheap.

But why can't they get a guy they trust to start a game against a real team when Skinner goes cold? That guy should be basically free. Pickard is a nice guy and has been a good soldier but he ain't it and the Oilers demonstrate consistently that they don't really trust him at all.

Lets get nuts and really change the dynamic for the team.

Deal one

To UTA: Calvin Pickard, 2025 4th and Joel Maatta

To EDM: Connor Ingram

Deal two

To PHI: Stuart Skinner, 2024 3rd and 2026 2nd

To EDM: Samuel Ersson and Morgan Frost (50% on the cap)

The team looks like

Nuge - McDavid - Hyman
Podkolzin - Draisaitl - Arvidsson
Henrique - Frost - Skinner/Kapanen
Janmark - Philp - Brown/Perry

Ekholm - Bouchard
Nurse - Klingberg (probably)
Kulak - Emberson
Stetcher

Ersson
Ingram

Significant change at the goaltending position, they both are signed into next year as well. Yes Schwartz is still here, I can't fix that personally.

The Oilers aren't bad defensively. They also have possible upgrades in Klinger and maybe even Regula gets a look.

Emberson looks really good as the 3rd pairing defender.

The forward group is fine especially after Kane gets back in time for playoffs.

If it costs a bunch to get a legit good goaltender, you have to buck up.

Trade J.Skinner to a playoff team out east for a 3rd or 4th that needs scoring and a spot for him in the top 6.

Then pay what it takes to aquire a goaltender. That's all this team needs right now.

Bouchard's next contract scares me. I like the guy.. but he does not deserve to be one of the highest paid dmen in the league with how he defends and his inconsistency. f*** he has been frustrating this season.

Ingram's numbers this year are poor in all respects, sure, but he's also still dealing with the loss of this mother. Before this season he had all the hallmarks of another Hill/Thompson/Daccord: a history of success at lower levels, good underlying metrics on bad teams, and in that 25-28 age range where goalies typically take another step.

Do I think Ingram is the best option? No, but he is an option, and we are at the point where any option other than Skinner/Pickard needs to be tried. We keep hearing that signings/waiver claims up front and on D are fine because if they don't work out we can just waive them, but yet that same attitude doesn't exist on the goalie front either for the media OR a very noisy portion of the fanbase.

A .780 isn't going to win us anything. We got a preview of a potential SCF matchup last night and it was clear our tender was far and away the second best on the ice. Go out and take a swing like Colorado, Washington and Vegas have all done... or piss away McDrai's prime. It's really that simple.
