What do the folks here think about the idea of Seth Jones assuming he is retained down to say ~$6M?

I haven't watched him close enough to have a read on if he's been bad because he's bad or if it's a product of the environment. Conceptually, taking a guy with his skills package and taking him from a #1 on a terrible team to a #4 on an elite team will open up his game a bit and give him more opportunity to make an impact.

The idea of a Top 4 of Ekholm - Bouchard - Nurse - Jones is extremely enticing to me. All big players, all can score, all can skate. I just don't have a good enough feel on Jone's strengths and weaknesses at the moment to know if it's actually an idea or not.

The how we fit that $6M after next year is another issue as well.
Would be great to upgrade Oil d skill, size and area defending. Waiving no-trade for Canada is a big question along with acquisition cost with big ticket retention and length. His birthplace Dallas looks like an ideal fit though.

I'd be legitimately surprised if the hawks would even retain up to $6m.

That's definitely a big ask.

For them though, if they want to get rid of him a buyout is a worse option, and if they somehow move his whole ticket a different bad deal would almost certainly be coming back.

Eating $3-3.5M for 3 more years is possibly more digestable than both.

I'd be legitimately surprised if the hawks would even retain up to $Me either. WIth the cap going up so much next year, there will be better options to get rid of his salary with much less retention out there.
I agree. With the cap going up so much next year, they may even be able to move him for little to no retention elsewhere. They may have to wait until summer, but that likely won't hurt any plans that have for the current season.

Ask Jeff Skinner to waive his NTC to go to Chicago (lolol) and then trade back for both Taylor Hall and Seth Jones :laugh::naughty::naughty:

I was actually just thinking about this- Dreger mentioned teams have called Chicago, and that does sound like something Bowman would do. I'd be intrigued by Jones with the right amount of retention. He's definitely better than 90% of the options out there.

Where I struggle is Chicago's side of this. Jones has a lot of term left, and is owed a lot of money. Retaining on him means tying up a retention slot for 6 years, 6 years of dead cap space, and asking their owner to eat a lot of cash. I think what Chicago would want to justify all of that is probably a lot more than what the Oilers would be willing to pay to acquire Jones.

Shit 6 years not 3. Got duped by puckpedia that has kind of a confusing chart.

Yes, that complicates it.

Apparently Boeser could be on the outs in Van if they can't get an extension done by TDL. One of the few guys on that team that scared me last year in the playoffs.

I know a scoring winger isn't a high priority, just always liked the player and thought it was interesting. I think we broke the Nucks like we did the flames lmao. Couldn't happen to a better fan base.

Is this true???

Seems like it. This just strikes my as an unforced error- Klingberg has already made $43 million and he's trying to resurrect his career- is he really going to walk away over $350k? If I'm him, I pick the team I think is the best fit, and agree to play for whatever they offer.

Honestly I think the Oilers are looking closely at Marcus Pettersson who would be a big boost to the depth, I also wonder about one of the guys in Utah, John Marino (if he would come to Edmonton this time lol) might make a solid fit.
Petersson looked slow. I think on Rishaug’s podcast they were saying that in the game against the Pens, when the Oilers used their speed, Pettersson struggled. The west is fast and hard- I think he’d struggle

Hopefully he's not a tire fire defensively.

Don't need more defenseman to get walked like Bouchard did last night.
Bouchard had an 82% xGF and scored the game winner. He was fantastic.

He’s a (very) poor man’s Hyman. Makes a net front impact on the power play and not much else.

Because cap accrues daily.

We can still bury his entire cap hit I believe, maybe not the signing bonus - not sure since it's both a special injury category and it's paid during the season it may be eligible to be bonus pool cap hit carried into next year?
It’s a signing bonus so can’t carryover. It’s a small amount. This just tells me they know Kane isn’t coming and/or Skinner will be moving. For a team that has been penny pinching all year- they have a plan

I mean the recent knee surgery confirmed me Kane won't be back before the playoffs. It legit sucks for him.

I've been hard on Stan (because Stan deserves it), but I do believe the brain trust has this figured out, so I'm not worry about the cap situation, this isn't Holland and his abacus or Chiarelli and his guessing.
