I've always wanted Ekholm as an Oiler, even way back when when the Preds had a glut of Dmen on the roster in the Weber/Suter/Ellis/young Josi days and thought a young Ekholm might be the odd man out but his best years have clearly been with the Oilers mainly for two reasons, because he finally crawled out of the shadows of Weber and then Josi and got his big opportunity to be the top Dman and, two, Paul Coffey. He has been quite as good this year as he was last year but I see him still being a solid top pairing Dman for at least the next 2-3 years, those Swedes generally age well.I had no idea that Ekholm was as good as he is, I thought he was a solid D that was more a part of a solid Nashville system. I was way off, the guy is a stud, borderline #1 D. If he was on PP1 here, I think he’d be a 60 + point D. I hope he resigns here and finishes his career as an Oiler and Stanley Cup Champion.
I don’t think it’s even possible to find another Ekholm this trade deadline , both because I don’t know if one is available and because I don’t believe the Oilers have the assets to quite someone that expensive.
Hoping that Bowman is the real deal and makes a couple smart and clever additions to this team. The Oilers look like the real deal, the correct tweak or 2 could put them over the top.
