Another defender and a 1B and this team is an absolute wagon.

I hope they have a really good understanding of the kind of defender that’s going to be the best fit and addition to our blue line. Wouldn’t be surprised if the guy they end up targeting isn’t even someone that’s popping up on the radar.

If you could get at league minimum, there is literally no downside to trying him out, as you can bury in minors. No idea how good he would be or not be, but certainly worth a shot if you could get at that price. I'm assuming he will sign for exactly that though, so I don't think salary will be the problem. I's more fit and interest I would think. I don't see a fit on the oilers myself. We don't need PP help at all, and Kling was never exactly known for his ES prowess, even when he was younger and healthier. Again, no risk, I just personally don't see the potential upside.
Klingberg over his career averages more ES points/82 than anyone on our blue line besides Bouchard.

Lots of guys go from being their teams #1 offensive guy to finding a role lower on the totem pole for a winner. OEL just did it. The upside is we get a guy who was once an elite offensive Dman, and if he can regain any semblance of that for league minimum, we are laughing.

can't blame Bowman for the past goaltending issues, he just got here. the current tandem of Skinner and Pickard at a combined 3.6 million is a great value, on a team that has very little cap space. I'd say this is the best the Oilers goaltending (NHL level only) has looked in a long time. They need more depth for sure, and they need to do a better job of developing and of pro scouting of goalies. Neither Askarov or Blackwood made sense due to the fact that Edmonton has very little cap room, and a very limited number of trade capital to use this year, to go along with a clearly much bigger, and more pressing need in a top 4 D upgrade. So I don't see how either of those 2 guys were a realistic option. I do agree, both would of been great to have, just poor timing on a number of different levels. The organizational goaltending issue needs to be addressed, I hope Bowman gets on it.

He's not gonna do shit, lol. Best to keep the expectations realistic, if these guys can show up to work with pants on that's automatically a good start.

Giving Philly a 1st for Ristolanien will probably exhaust the front office.

I was full on Leon. (I was also full-on Yak and JP so there is that). And yes we were definitely in the minority. I would have taken Draisaitl over Reinhart but not over Ekblad.
I even have posts pf pumping Leon at the draft as the best coming player. I dont understand guys here sometimes. At the draftyear, you could clearly see that he got a sense for passing and a hockeysense no other was close of having. Bennet and Reinhart looked like good, not great players, Reinhart come across for me as a regular guy that score some goals, and not so much more. It was Ekblad or Draisaitl that draft, where Ekblad was seen as that No 1 D everyone is searching forever for, it was the easy choice. Draisoatl was the choice if you had an eye for talent.

I keep changing my mind whether I would prefer a shut down defender a la Connor Murphy or more of a puck mover a la Matheson.

On one hand, breakout issues are kind of our achilles heel, but on the other so is defending in the corners at times. I think I lean towards the puck mover, but hard to say.

If he wants to come to a contender for a low cap hit, why not throw a dart?

Only way I see it making much sense is if the plan would be to play:

Ekholm - Bouchard
Nurse - Emberson
Kulak - Klingberg
Stetcher

IMO that's a bad plan. You could sign and waive him I guess but apparently there's enough interest that we have to assume he would just get claimed so seems like a waste of time.

Perfect. Even if we do those trades, I'm pretty sure we will still have cap space left lol

I still find it rather confusing but:
$1M + Kane OR $6.2M + Kane out until playoffs?

We have money to spend. Just HOPEFULLY the money is spent on the right players and not bags of shitters.

I wouldn't mind Klingberg if he is just coming in to take #6-7 minutes and no top 4 minutes. He's no top 4 defender anymore.

Bring in Marcus Petterson too. Make it an all Swedes D core

By the way, for those who complain when we lose a marginal player on waivers, Lavoie doesn't appear to be much of a loss.

Would've been nice if the team traded for him as a 1B and sent Pickard down.

Oh, I talked about him endlessly this year lol. I specifically watched a bunch of Sharks games just to take a look at him.

When you also seen that he was about middle of the pack in stats on a garbage team, I knew he was good.

I am being more positive now. I am going to stop talking smack about SKinner.

He is playing well and I hope he elevates.

A Blackwood/Skinner combo would have been deadly....

Just give us a Pickard upgrade Stan

I was a advocate for him also. Yet we had mouthbreathers from Oilersnation or members of the media (cough cough Gregor) who had no belief that Blackwood would be an upgrade over Pickard.

I don't care who it is, but the team cannot afford going into another post season with the tandem of Skinner/Pickard. Upgrade that backup spot.

Over the last few years Klingberg has been one of the worst defensemen in the league at defending, both in Dallas and Toronto who are both good teams. No thanks, all he does is bleed chances against.

Yep. It’s not like he was getting obliterated defensively on bad teams.

The blind insistence from Edmonton media that Pickard is a hero level backup goalie is incredibly strange. The topic can't even be brought up without "LOOK AT HIS NUMBERS HE'S WINNING GAMES HE'S AMAZING."

I think it's pretty clear to anyone that watches hockey that Pickard isn't that fundamentally sound, is small, and doesn't have anywhere close to the game to handle anything above spot duty against select opponents. He moves well and can make big saves at times off of sheer will, but that's it.

I think Pickard would be more than fine as a backup to one of the big hitter starters like Hellebuyck, Shesterkin, Vasilevsky, etc, but we just need more than that here and it makes no sense why the media doesn't seem to even want to entertain the thought.

The sample size is still tiny. Skinner hasn't been all that far off this in the same time frame and we know what people think of him.

I'm not sure burning 1.5M of cap, not to mention assets to aquire, on a Pickard upgrade is what this is team needed tbh.

I don't know. The coach leans a bit too heavily on Skinner. Last thing we need is him burning out (or worse, getting injured) come spring.
