It was him and Chychrun at the time as the two big options iirc, maybe Jensen too. I wanted Chychrun, but was cool with either. People forget there was question marks with Ekholm too. Did he have any more offense to show? Was he going to age well? Fortunately both seem to have gotten a positive answer.

I'd say K'andre is closer to Chychrun. Young guy, very athletic, showed some flashes of high end offensive potential, people question their defensive work. Matheson is more like the Ekholm for this year imo, not in play style, but that they are an older guy with some question marks but term with a good caphit. His ?'s are a bit more worrisome though. Will his offense translate here without PP time? Can he play RD effectively? Is he a bone head in the defensive zone?

I too would welcome Miller though.
I actually wonder if Severson is closer to Ekholm this year, a guy who's shown things offensively, but his defensive game is suspect, plus he has a bit of term left.

I, sincerely, don't remember as much talk about Ekholm, it might also be that I, and many others, didn't expect him to get traded or be this good.

Ekholm was in rumours before signing his long term deal and then they quieted down until they were struggling in the second half of the year he was traded when it seemed like Preds would miss the playoffs. Preds weren’t trading him months before the trade deadline when they were still pushing.

Maybe Preds were taking calls and seeing what kind of value was out there but they certainly weren’t going to trade him in December or January. So if management would have moved early to make a trade, they would have wasted their shot and missed the opportunity to trade for Ekholm.

Patience pays and the suckers always panic and make dumb moves early.

Date, Jan 7. Says they had word Ekholm was being shopped.

Search the trade board and there is even threads from earlier that season with Preds fans talking about trading him.

Nobody trades big pieces early season for the most part. Doesn't change the fact that Ekholm being available didn't come out of nowhere around the deadline. It was well known, and this whole thing with hoping for a surprise top pairing guy to be available is just people huffing copium because they aren't a fan of the options actually available.

If and when he was being shopped is irrelevant. Teams are constantly checking on guys and discussing interest and values. It’s an ongoing dance amongst executives that fans and even the media see and hear only a tiny fraction of. Even though values are being discussed, it doesn’t mean guys are available and the majority of them don’t become truly available until near the deadline if at all.

It was said that Ekholm was a surprise, I gave receipts showing that he wasn't if you were paying attention at the time. You can twist and try and worm around it, but you are all wrong.

A guy we should look at in the off-season is Nick Perbix in Tampa. Big RHD who's has played most of his minutes with Lilleberg, and put up good numbers doing so. Will be a 27yo UFA, and Tampa doesn't have any other big names coming off the books, so they may have to let him go. They also have a couple D that could come up next season to replace him potentially.

they will only trade him if they fall out of the playoff race

Oh yeah, no way they move him in season unless something crazy happens. I was just looking at upcoming FA'S, saw his name and after some digging he looks like he'd be a great fit here if we still have that 2RD hole open come the off-season.

Just wanted to say that Stauffer hinted at Rasmus Ristolainen being a target for Edmonton. He talked about him for quite a while
MacT also said he scouted him in Buffalo, huge red flag was how many minuses he had compared to his teammates. I only caught parts of the segment though, but they were going down the list of defenceman possibly available. Connor Murphy was brough up, MacT says he likes him.

"Hey Perbix wanna make $4M a year in Edmonton."
"Sorry I prefer $2.5M in Tampa, i'll make more!"

You know, there’s a lot of talk about how the cap is going to work and what exactly our cap space is going to be. The accrual process and if Kane will now be on LTIR till playoffs. And these are super important. Do not get me wrong. But I think management also needs to fix the Jeff Skinner situation. There’s a free 3m sitting in the press box more often lately. Just got to work with him to find a soft landing spot that he will waive for. Maybe, just maybe Boston would be interested. They can’t score. Skinner has past success scoring. Maybe they would take him for next to nothing if we can help them work through cap space issues. Just a thought.

Good call dude. I shouldn't have put so much weight in Hart's comments. People were right to doubt him.

I definitely don't know all the nuances but it didn't make any sense that Edmonton would purposefully put Kane on LTIR early instead of waiting if it meant they didn't accrue cap space. The capfriendly guy would know better and Bowman specifically said he was happy with their cap and have been accruing all year.

Don't you mean left handed people?
The reason why there are so many left-shooting players, is because right-handed people tend to shoot left-handed. While there are some exceptions, by and large the stronger hand is up top, the hand that stays on the stick at all times. Which leads to more left-handed shooters as there are more right-handed than left-handed people.
That’s just plain false. Most Europeans are right shots and most North American are left shots. Has nothing to do with which hand you right with. I remember the split being 70/30 in favour of left hand shooters in North American and almost the exact flip for Europeans
