IMO the best teams are teams that can win no matter the style of hockey. As it stands IMO we are not equipped for an all out war against big and physical teams in a long series. Last season we saw some of our players injured in the playoffs, McDavid cheap shotted by Zadorov and Soucy with no response. Ideally we add 2 heavy and physical players that also crash the net and make life difficult on other teams down low on the cycle. Who are guys that we could target for such roles? Greenway is on Buffalo and an UFA at season's end but has a huge salary at $3 million. Who are some other guys that we could target from poor teams? Brazzeau was a beast to play against for instance in our last game.

I thought of Greenway too, but he's out for bit I believe.

I bet that dog eats your poop in the litterbox.

McCarron as a 4th line winger I think would be huge.
He would and I'm confused lol. McCarron kills penalties too which his huge.

Kane will be back to fill the role of enforcer/shit disturber. But Kane will not be enough. And adding a coke machine that can’t play Oilers hockey, who compromises the ability of our team isn’t the answer either.

The solution, is that the players we already have need to add an element of DIRT to their game.

It’s not some random 4th line face puncher who can barely skate that did the following, it was:

MacKinnon who slew footed an already injured Drai.
Landeskog who elbowed Yamo out of the NHL.
Kieth who cracked Sedins jaw with an elbow.
Tkachuk who gave McD 5 unanswered jabs to the face and back of his head.
Hedman who bloodied Gallagher into complete ineffectiveness.
Pietro who tried to chop Drais arm off.

Etc etc etc.

The answer must come from within the room. And yes they do need to add that element to their game if they want to beat any type of opponent out there, Panthers included.

I don’t buy it, there’s no such thing as a deterrent in today’s NHL these days, and often if you retaliate all you end up doing is hurting your team on the scoreboard. All these big slugs end up doing is costing you because they don’t have the feet or hands to keep up when the hockey gets fast. End of the day it’s not about size, it’s about your speed, skill and in playoff hockey your willingness to battle which most guys ramp up during playoffs.

I was always a much smaller guy at every level I played but I was fast, strong on my skates and loved to get into the mix. Often times I was wrecking bigger guys because when they met me, they were getting the strongest part of my body in my hip at their knee or thigh. That was my deterrent, come at me along the wall or in the corners and I’m gonna get low where my base is the strongest and I’m gonna drive my hip into the side of your lower half. I was a wrecking ball, a business maker for orthopedic surgeons.

Sincerely, the Oilers should call about Michael McCarron, fits what they do and what they need. Pat Maroon would help as well, imo.

Maroon is 36 and has lost a step. considering he was not that quick to start with? McCarron? I like the fact he is playing 12 to 13 minutes a night. signed for one more year after this one--So I would be curious what the ask would be

In fairness our response was going out and killing Vancouver in games 6 and 7 and winning the series on their home ice by shutting them down.

Maybe trade for one of the defenders available since the D cores weakness is getting realized now. Maybe just get someone like....

MIKE MATHESON

Bring on the hate!
I see this as part of getting us ready for the playoffs, IMO Ekholm is probably one of it not the best mentors for young D. Just playing with him, getting some advice and tweaking his game a bit will go a long way in ensuring Emberson is playoff ready.

Also just added bits of familiarity is good to have in case of injuries, the playoffs aren't the best place to correct malfunctions so if we can iron out things before hand all the better.

Nothing about these changes scream to me Mike Matheson is the answer, I'm not entirely against him, but he isn't at the top of my wanted list.

Maroon lost a step 2 years ago. He’s a shell of his former of self and I can’t believe people think we should get him back.

I’m not familiar with mccarron but I assume he’s a tough guy type player? Where would he fit in on the roster?

So do you see Provorov as 1 and done? Or do you ask CBJs to talk to his agent and see if he is open to re signing? Because the assets it would take for us to get him when we have little to begin with probably dictates us even having a chance here. CBJs would ask for something like Akey and a second? They likely get that in value from someone else.
Russians (mostly) don't want to play in Siberia.
Provorov is a superior puck mover and has improved his play in his own zone somewhat. Would be a great guy to pair with a learning defensive guy in Emberson who arrows are pointiing up. Provo can play both sides and can move up and down the lineup. This would go along way in letting the third pair play more minutes stealing some time from our second pair.
Akey and '26 first (and J. Skinner if we could make it work) for Provorov and OLivier both willing to resign for 3 years.
That 2 parts out of three pieces we would need.
I dont think Provorov would resign. Not something we should spend on if he wont. Were about to get priced out of our window in 3 years anyways. We will need the young assets.

Matvey continues with his strong play giving every indication he has turned a corner.
Dont look now but Rodrigue has had a couple of strong games in a row. Maybe its time to find a string of 2 or 3 weaker opponents and give him a shot. At the very least it would give us an indication of what we have there. Would be nice to get him some experience if Skinner goes down for any length of time.
Starting December 29 we have ANA, Utah, ANA, Seattle.
If he is NFG then it gives us time to strengthen Bako.

@Bryanbryoil stop asking me for the beef. I already told you, it's at the grocery store and not on the Oilers! I don't have any cause it's too expensive. :sarcasm:

In all seriousness, I'd love to get a shutdown bruiser on the back end. Too bad Knoblauch doesn't see hitting as that important. He's a great coach but his biggest fault is thinking that physical hockey isn't necessary imo.

Also for heaven sakes, get a third goalie!

A guy like Tom Wilson is a deterrent. I don't care what others say.

Nobody is scared of players in todays NHL, the league has all but removed the gratuitous violence and its neutered the psychos people would be scared of.

I’d say Wilson is even less of a deterrent because he’s an actual good player. If I’m an opponent I know he’s a hot head so I’m running around on his guys trying to do what I can to set him off or goad him into taking a penalty or adding to his lengthy suspension list. He doesn’t get the benefit of the doubt from the league anymore so if he does anything he’s going to the box or to the room and he’s hurting his team. Due to the fact he’s an impact player I’d say he’s the opposite of a deterrent, in a playoff series I’m trying to provoke him into doing something that is likely to get him suspended.

What's with the McCarron fascination? He's terrible. He's big which is cool I guess.
Derek Ryan doesn't have bigness but he's a better actual hockey player than McCarron and even he needs to be a rotation player at best in this lineup.

You don't think players think twice about taking liberties against Ovechkin when Wilson is his linemate? Don't be naive.

He for sure is a deterrent, as is Kane, because even for all the things you say, there’s always the percentage chance that wires cross and “it” happens.

Yes, the league has negated the likelihood of this happening with regularity, and the multi game suspensions would ensue, but it’s still an element that can happen, and most unexpectedly, and that makes these players a deterrent. When the player can take a regular shift (Wilson, Kane versus a Reeves) it’s even more powerful.

Provorov or Ferraro looking like the better options for Edmonton right now. I like the lower cap numbers.

I like Provorov's game though it's largely through his junior years which I had about a dozen live viewings both regular season and playoff. Though he's often been a top pair NHL guy on poor teams, I think his game would translate very well as a mid pair and mesh with the Oilers systems and personnel.

Oil don't have the assets to burn on a straight UFA potential one and done though imo. They found a way with Henrique to re-sign but Provorov is still at a good age and likely a competitive market for next year's free agency, especially as team's move to lock up their own talent.

I'm not convinced about Ferraro...
