I don’t think he is all of the sudden going to get a big contract offer if he gets a couple more points on a garbage hockey team. Figuring it out here and having a strong playoff run also will get him decently paid by an actual good team.

I just don’t see him wanting to finish his career without ever playing meaningful hockey. I also think he’s in the top 6 by the time kane gets back

He is probably in PTO territory right now on his current trajectory. Netting 30 points in the back half of the season with someone like the Hawks who would pump and dump him to a different contender at the TDL makes sense for Skinner and achieves both while a team like the Hawks pick up a pick for taking him and another for dumping him.

You’re also assuming Skinner is willing to lose a few million dollars to possibly go deep with the Oilers as a depth player.

And I find it unlikely Skinner takes anyone’s place in the top 6 after Kane gets back as you’ve got Kane Hyman RNH and Podkolzin who Draisaitl apparently loves on his line.

I don’t think they’ll trade DR and Indont think they’d get much of anything for him so they’d likely try and sneak him through waivers if they absolutely need the cap space and then bring him back as a black ace. I think while he’s not the player he once was, he’s versatile and he’s a good hard working veteran, a good room guy and a guy you can insert in a pinch.
I am very vocal that we need to replace him on the roster. And I think Nashville would absolutely take him back in a deal for Sissons. I think that he's a respected veteran and he'll be treated as such. I doubt that he'd clear waivers.

Sissons is my guy. Even at full clip, that's a player that makes a lot of sense for a team that expects to win a Championship in each of the next two seasons.

Matvey continues with his strong play giving every indication he has turned a corner.
Dont look now but Rodrigue has had a couple of strong games in a row. Maybe its time to find a string of 2 or 3 weaker opponents and give him a shot. At the very least it would give us an indication of what we have there. Would be nice to get him some experience if Skinner goes down for any length of time.
Starting December 29 we have ANA, Utah, ANA, Seattle.
If he is NFG then it gives us time to strengthen Bako.
Why though? Nothing you present here is convincing enough to gamble on points when there is a existing fight to make the cut for the playoffs. No.

My guess is Skinner waives his NMC and gets traded as he can’t be happy getting 10 minutes a night on the 4th line in a contract year, Ryan is depth and Kapanen will also be depth as the Oilers add Kane and probably Philp and a better forward than Kapanen.
I think Skinner wants to win over money. He’s guaranteed 2/3 of what was remaining of his old contract and will have close to 100 million in career earnings if he retired after this year.

PTO? Come on. Such an exaggeration. He gets a contract on his name alone nvm him still probably scoring 15 goals.

Yah I think Skinner is okay taking a million or so less to not retire with 0 playoff games.

It may be crazy but I think Skinner replaces Kapanen before Kane comes back.

Agreed on Sissons, you and I have both been crushing on the player for a long while, I’d love to see the Oilers add him. That’s said, I think Nashville has shown they aren’t interested in retaining so it would have to be full pop which means someone has to go out unless they’re confident they can ltir Kane until playoffs.

Ideally, they turn the page on the Skinner expirement if he’d agreed to waive and hopefully they could find a taker that’s acceptable to him and maybe even get a small return they could put towards a Sissons deal. Possibly though you’re looking at dealing Henrique or Arvidsson to make cap and roster space.

He’s on his way to a 15 point season. That’s PTO territory for 33 year old ex-scorers on budget conscious teams.

$1m is a lot of real money but he’s looking at a multi million dollar loss, not just $1M.

He might replace Kapanen but it’s not me saying he possibly wants out. I’m just repeating what’s been said and I agree that he’s not a fit in our top 6.

Money is money and agents jobs is to maximize player earnings. They have a lot of pull with their clients and some players value maximizing revenue over winning. In the end you and I have no idea what Skinner wants. He’s not a fit here in our top 6 and he’s clearly not a bottom 6 player. Players want to win but players also want to play and have egos and pride.

IMO the best teams are teams that can win no matter the style of hockey. As it stands IMO we are not equipped for an all out war against big and physical teams in a long series. Last season we saw some of our players injured in the playoffs, McDavid cheap shotted by Zadorov and Soucy with no response. Ideally we add 2 heavy and physical players that also crash the net and make life difficult on other teams down low on the cycle. Who are guys that we could target for such roles? Greenway is on Buffalo and an UFA at season's end but has a huge salary at $3 million. Who are some other guys that we could target from poor teams? Brazzeau was a beast to play against for instance in our last game.
Always like Hathaways game

J.Skinner + Stetcher/Emberson for Carlo would be ideal swap assuming BOS (a playoffs bound team) sees Skinner as a top6 winger and one of our RDs as good enough replacement.

I don't think we need Kostin more than a 4C but would be nice to have him and Podkolzin locked here for long term

What's with the McCarron fascination? He's terrible. He's big which is cool I guess.
Derek Ryan doesn't have bigness but he's a better actual hockey player than McCarron and even he needs to be a rotation player at best in this lineup.

What about McCarron is terrible exactly? I’m sure there’s a graph somewhere that says this, but he’s a strong penalty killer (on the NHL’s best PK), is good on the dot, strong on the forecheck 5v5, physical/fights, and was a big part of the Predator’s streak to finish the season last year to push into the playoffs.

He’s a mile better than Ryan and it’s crazy to say otherwise IMO. It isn’t even close.

He gets 3 points the rest of the season? Come on. The exaggeration again.

Sure a couple million. He’s going to make 100 million. Make a couple more and retire only playing garbage pointless hockey? I just doubt that’s what he wants to do. Also like I said a strong playoff performance gets him paid anyways.

I guess we shall see.

He is playing 10 minutes a night on the 4th line with the press box the next stop. Hard to get points while eating popcorn.

And this is real money not a fan abstract we’re talking about.

Anyway like I said Brown & Strudwick think his agent will pull the trigger on a trade request shortly. I’m just the messenger but agree with their opinion.

It’s costing him potentially millions in future contract dollars to be barely playing right now. When Kane comes back he will be in the press box.

Brown and Strudwick think his agent will approach the Oilers over the Christmas break about a finding him a better fit.
I would be very very happy if we could dump Skinner without costing us any draft or prospect capital, don't even need that much of a return. Just need the 3 million in cap space to go for a player that can actually be useful. Henrique too but that might be more difficult with another year left on his contract.

100%

Where does Skinner fit then?
A non-playoff team, just like usual for him.

Exactly. Jeff Skinner is not moving under any circumstances, and the team probably feels like he will eventually find his stride and consistency. There isn't going to be any hardball tactics. It wouldn't even be worth it. We will need veterans to sign for cheap 1-2 year deals in years to come. How we treat someone like Skinner will affect our reputation with that kind of player. If Skinner isn't good enough the only way out is to wait it out

Skinner could very well still retire with 0 playoff games even if he’s here the rest of the year. He’s not in the lineup if the playoffs started today and we had a healthy lineup.

He and his agent would be naive to assume that he’ll just get playoff games. There are other playoff teams that could use him, and we’ll have enough room where we could even retain some of his money and not have it impact other things we’re trying to do.

I think it’s a mistake to assume that no playoff teams would want him. There’s very likely a deal somewhere.

I think we’ve given plenty of older guys opportunities when they come here. Difference is they actually fit and they actually perform.

At some point just dragging him around on the bottom of the roster is going to be worse for Skinner than just moving him. Probably already there to be honest.

I mean traded to another playoff team might be a thing.. I just don’t think he waives for a bad team.

I just posted above that a Sekera type would be perfect for this team. Well Provorov is likely the closest thinge to Sekera that's availbe this TDL.

Provorov-Bouchard
Nurse-Kulak
Ekholm-Emberson

That looks very nice.
Thanks! Missed your post Sekera was a nice player for the Oil.

I think a two way puck mover fits this team's need. But I'm also a believer in long, multi-skilled deep d corps that have elements of area defending, physical hard play style, and of course skill and high processors who can execute efficient puck moving and transportation.

I tend to think they will still anchor the top pair around Bouchard and Ekholm who are lethal behind McDavid's super elite ice tilt to offensive zone time. I think the acquisition will be a sure fire top 4 ability and able to pivot with Kulak in situational useage and deployment between 2RD and 3LD.

Skinner won't agree to go to a bottom feeder. I wouldn't mind trading him off but I don't see a path to it. There's no playoff team that will take him

The team will keep him around, and if it stays bad he will just be scratched and will play games once in a while or step in if someone is injured.

At the very least, the team will not even consider anything until close to the deadline. They will just keep hammering away and hope he starts clicking. And btw, I bet he will. I'm a big believer in talent and he's got that

I think that there are more playoff teams than you think that wouldn’t want a cheap one shot scorer. He doesn’t fit our style, but he would elsewhere.

Hopefully it’s quick and beneficial.
Even though that’s his wish and our desire, it’s still gonna cost us to dump that 3M cap hit.
No it won’t. He had a lot of suitors in the summer and signed a friendly 3M a year. It won’t cost us anything

Ferraro is in over his head in San Jose. I think he's playing too many minutes and he is overextending trying to push offense.

His best game was being a compliment to a bigger name partner. I think his defensive game is his strong suit and in Edmonton, I think that Coffey could get his game under control.

His numbers last season with Emberson were also pretty solid and would translate well as a bottom pairing.

Provorov? Yeah, you're going to need at least $6m to get him extended.
I did a wee bit of a dive into San Jose d stats and deployment awhile back. Personally, I'm not convinced Ferraro is high end enough for the Oiler need. Smaller in size I think they will want someone with more length and/or higher puck moving ability. Provorov also isn't huge, but a thick frame and I think better processor who will put up solid production. Not convinced the Oil roll their precious assets on a UFA but I think Provorov would fit pretty well.

I think the target will be a bonafide top 4 at worst a swing guy with Kulak or if jells with Nurse able to keep Kulak locked in as a high end 3LD. Emberson is starting to find his niche on the third pair with PK ability. Not sure he'll have the point producer skill side component to be a 2 pair guy but we'll see. I think the missing piece will be puck mover, calm and poised processor, ideally adding more length to help their area defending work.

Keep repeating myself but Knoblauch's best deployment and game management has been experimenting to uncover a further level with Kulak with +3 minute ice-time and ability to take on 2 RD responsibilities. It's unlocked greater flexibility to acquire the finishing piece on d.

He’s on pace for 15 goals playing 11 mins a night on the 3rd or 4th line and minimal PO whose centre has 9 points. He is nowhere close to PTO territory and is probably underpaid.
