Nashville must be considering getting their tank on. With a bit of luck they could pick 3rd overall,
20th and 25th overall and 35th and 52nd overall.
Good chance that at least 3/5 will develop.
Throw in that 35 and could probably move that 20 to 13/14.
Could get 2/3rds of a retool in one down season.

I will try and locate the sources i looked at but they clearly showed their height and weight to be exaclty the same.
Of course these things can change for a young man Savoies age so its poosible your info is more current.
I am open to any sources you have that difinitively state that Savoi is taller and heavier than Yamamoto.
NHL players heights and weights can vary significantly by source and NHL.com does not always seem to have accurate info. But for what it is worth one accurate source in time is the NHL Combine results. Savoie was 5'9'' and 175 lbs while Yamamoto was 5'7.5'' and 146 lbs. Of course this was when they were 18 but it is not unreasonable to assume that the relative size difference remained reasonably consistent. Visually, I'd say this was the case, but that is just an observation. Height-wise the difference is not as noticeable but Savoie seems a lot heavier to me. These numbers are also more consistent with the numbers on Elite Prospects which has Yamamoto at 5'8'' and 152lbs vs Savoie at 5'9'' 179 lbs.

Sorry for interferring in your argument -have a really bad cold and can't sleep - I think its pretty clear that M. Savoie is closer in size to Paddy Kane than to Kailer. Suppose he will add 1/2 inch and about 3-5 lbs as his true man strength hits (athletes get a bit of this early thats why its not more).

The real question is (supposing Savoie is switched to RW and supposing Savoie learns to be more circumspect in crashing along the boards) where does he fit on a sliding scale of skill between Kailer (lets give him a number of 50) and P. Kane (lets give him a 100).
I would suppose that in judging this you have to assume that Savoie has enough speed to escape the 'crush'. Yes of course none of them are exactly the same players.

It's not my argument! I was just trying to add some information to a discussion about their relative sizes.

If Savoie ends up in the 180 lbs range size should not really be a big issue in terms of being "crushed" . There are DB's who play at not much more than 180 lbs and they survive.

Late reply --watching London Knights/Guelph Storm highlights. Interesting.

I think a future line of Podko -- Drais -- Savoie
has a future. Their skill sets complement each other well.
Somewhat confusing here is that Drais trends to right side halfwall and right side general whereas Matt trends more towards the middle and bangs off guys there.
Podko already has the come late a bit shooting ability of Evander and can bull his way to the net to provide screens and hopefully learns to be trashman. He just needs to do it a bit better and to get a bit stronger - the skills are there whereas Savoie needs to modify his game a bit and improve his defensive game.

There is a great article over on the Athletic by Lowetide talking about the Oilers defensive make-up. In summary, despite what most think- Oilers defense has been excellent. Nurse-Kulak as a second pair or Nurse-Stetcher as a second pair have been performing at what a typical 2nd pair does for championship teams. Emerson, after a shaky start, has been excellent. He also posted some numbers on Nurse playing on his right and they are, surprisingly, very good. It has opened up his ability to transition the puck. He even suggested, that if this keeps up, it may be better for the Oilers to look for a left d partner for Emberson. It’s still early - let’s see how it holds up.

Everyone knows this team needs a RD upgrade but we aren’t where we are at because of our defense. The whole right defensive upgrade has become a talking point (about our current struggles) and it’s become annoying.

We are where we are at because of our special teams, lack of offense and goaltending.

I blame Stauffer a lot because when this team isnt playing well this year, he always talks about a defensive upgrade.

Its also annoying because I think Nurse/Stetcher have been fine but Knoblauch keeps trying different combinations. Honestly I don’t why we even have Dermott up on the main roster. Guy should be in the AHL and brought up when there is an injury if we are so worried about accruing cap.

Forwards have been a mess all season. I generally blame the players for the lack of offense. But once again I kind of blame Knoblauch (who I actually like) because he can’t figure out any line combos. I think once again the Oilers had a putrid preseason.

But if we have learned anything about this team in the past it’s probably not worth over analyzing their play at the beginning of the year because it takes awhile to get going (which would be nice if JJ/SB could figure out why).

What an interesting game today between the sharks and the devils.
Ceci plays top minutes +1. MacBlack with the 44 stop shutout.
Kovacevic plays 3rd most minutes for his side including top PK minutes and d zone starts, 3 shots and wasn't on ice for the single goal against. He is better than the revolving 3 and Kulak.
Likely available for a slight overpay (they need to get Nemec NhL minutes). Skates pretty well passes up out of the zone good (can get the puck to Nursery in the ozone. More importantly can clean up Nurse's poop in the Dzone and can handle the necessary punching in the playoffs when we need Brain Fart on the ice. He makes 765k. Much better than a Fabbro.

We would still have all our cap space at the deadline.
Let the Kovacevic dream die already.

Unfortunately not much they can do at the moment. Hopefully the team is in a decent spot at the trade deadline.

I’m not personally happy though that this team needs to be in a hole to bring their A game. People keep talking about cup hangover but we have seen a slow starts to season and playoff rounds through multiple seasons now. They have likely already cost themselves first in the pacific this year.

Like I said I would like management to figure out why they are so lethargic to get to their A game.

The "hole" this year is not what it was last year at least. On Nov 11, 2023 the Oilers record was 3-9-1. Of course we can't expect that they will go on a 16 game winning streak but at least for now its not quite the panic point it was a year ago.

The defense has been fine. On paper it's an issue but, one, they just need to let Emberson grow into his role because he has the skills to be a solid NHL defender and, two, the defense hasn't been a problem for a while, it was solid most of the season last year and has been fine this season as well.

It doesn't mean that they couldn't use an upgrade because they sure can in order to really go Cup hunting but as a unit they're really not that bad. The offense has been the problem and inconsistent goaltending.

Philly has had some interesting roster moves. They healthy scratched Michkov and now they are scratching Drysdale and Frost. Torts is being Torts it seems. Honestly, it may be that there will be opportunities for deals with Philly.
You have to wonder at what point Briere and Keith say John, we’re not going to destroy these young players anymore.

I love Torts. His objectives are exactly what I would strive for. But his road map to get there sometimes takes a lot of gravel, bumpy roads.

From the numbers I was looking at there seems to be one clear common denominator both the 2nd and 3rd pairing flourish when Kulak is on the ice and either suck or tread water without him.

I do agree that Emberson has stabilized quite a bit from his shakier play in the early season, but really the only person who deserves a lot of credit amongst our bottom 4 d is Kulak, who is the only player on the team greatly exceeding expectations; in saying that I have no idea if his present level of play is sustainable.

We are where we are because our key players can't be bothered to give a shit this early into the season.

How many times do we come roaring back during the back half of the season? It's our M.O. start slow, finish strong.

In realizing the team we are you have to judge not on what is occurring presently, but what kind of team we are when things normalize and I'm going to agree with Stauffer and Knoblauch and say our defense is the primary place in need of upgrade and Stecher quite simply is not a top 4 playoff caliber d-man, I would personally go further and say he isn't a playoff caliber d-man altogether, but no so far removed that he can't play the role of a temporary hero in case of injury, but on the long haul I believe he is below the curve.

You only need to read what Nashville fans are pretty much unanimously saying about Fabbro being waived to see that some people here (one in particular) don't know what they're talking about when calling him trash.

Anyways, say the Oilers didn't put a claim in for him. The logic would make sense if they are truly eyeing an Ekholm-level acquisition at the deadline (Pulock? Parayko? Provorov? who knows . . . ). My concern is that they need to get to the deadline first, and the current D lineup might pose a consistent challenge until we get there.

On this mornings 32 Thoughts Podcast, Friedman was discussing the Blue Jackets claiming Dante Fabbro in regards to David Jiricek. A budding tumultuous relationship with the Blue Jackets, Fabbro is another RH impediment to his path at a roster spot. Already into another regime that didn't draft him, wonders if Waddell wouldn't be attached to him.

The Blue Jackets are fostering a nice development ground for young Russian talent and they don't have a 2nd this coming draft.
Maxim Beryozkin + STL 2nd '25, get 'er done Stan.

I suspect it would take more than that, maybe adding the 2026 1st, but either way I'd hope they would be all over that.

Yeah I’m sure a public trade request from Jiriceks team is coming down the pipe. Jackets have added defenders that have blocked his path and now they go and pick up a guy who directly competes with him for a bottom end roster spot. The worst part is, unlike the Broberg situation, Columbus isn’t a contending team, hell they aren’t even really going to be a playoff competitive team. There’s no reason not to start working the kid in more except for the fact you just don’t see him as part of the roster moving forward.
