Agree. Given their current cap issues and barring something very creative from the Oilers brain trust I anticipate them filling that hole at or near the TDL unless Broberg completely breaks out or a huge rebound season from Ceci.

After being heavily sheltered on the bottom pairing minutes last season, but still not being able to beat out Desharnais or Kulak for the bottom pairing during the playoffs, I'd be legitimate surprised if Broberg manages to breaks out. I hope he's able to do so as it would do wonders for both him and the team, but I'm skeptical.

There's likely a reasonable safety net with the quality of this team to roll through to the trading deadline. Personally I think even if Broberg hits it out of the park he would be locked in at third pairing vs. any higher come playoff time to hedge against inexperience when the play style becomes heavier and mistakes more critical. And that's just fine in realistically onboarding young d-men on a window Cup mature phase team.

For over two years I've maintained the Oil needed 2 top 4 d-men to have a true Cup level d-corp. They nailed the Ekholm deal which included helping to stabilize Bouchard's game into a top 4 specialist role. The job however is not done and they need a top 4 upgrade to complement Nurse's wild horse tendencies.

I can appreciate Ceci's game as a third pairing support player with some utility and aptitude to play up the roster in short duration. The holes in his game get exposed against top competition and he and Nurse together get caught too often out of position. Ceci's also out muscled too often. He's likely going to be moved if as I believe the Oilers need the final, big piece of their remaining roster, a veteran top 4 RD. I anticipate another Ekholm model deadline deal for this missing final big roster piece.

The current Oilers defense is not good enough. Especially in front of this goaltending tandem.

Valid, but sometimes a player isn't given the opportunity. What Vinny does is different than Broberg does. If Vinny gets turnstiled a few more times like he did in the playoffs, you would certainly see more Broberg. If you gave Broberg 20 games of 14 minutes you would at least know what you had.

Broberg, Holloway and even McLeod need to be given a long leash for the first couple months of the year. Seems like year after year we are going into trade deadline and then off season again hoping these guys can take the next step. Time to start seeing what our young players can actually do.

No. LTIR Lets you go over the cap by the amount you have on LTIR . If the cap is 82 Million and say player XXX was injured and on LTIR and has a cap hit of 5 million . That 5 million doesn't disappear you still have it against the cap however you can go over the cap by 5 million . So you can spend 87 million ut the day the player comes off of LTIR you have to be cap compliance so back to 82M

Boqvist and Sundqvist both go for 775k a piece, both of them being really solid options who put up similar amounts of points as Mcleod. Mcleod is going to come in at 2m+.

He strikes me as very similar to Kulak in ideal role. Bottom pairing guy on a good team who could move up if you need him to.

He's just miscast here, especially with the emergence of Bouchard.

How about an offer sheet of $6,435,186 for 4 years. That comes out to 25.7M. Makes Bouchard an UFA at age 27, the lowest age possible I do believe. And only one 1st rounder and a 3rd as compensation.

Pesce and Parayko are Ekholm level D. Maybe we keep Ceci as #4 and sell high on Bouchard to land that Dman.

Discussion board? Yes. Repetitive echo chamber, not so much. If posters can’t get their opinion across in an effective manner or expressed in a way that convinces others of their positions and they continue to pollute threads with the same argument incessantly, it is mainly their problem .

I don’t think anyone is telling them they can’t post. It’s when they post the same thing over and over and over again without adding any new info, data or angle to their posts, that people are telling them to “get bent”.

You are right. He's a 4/5 d-man. I was kind of projecting on a deep, elite blue line he might slot in as a quality third pair. He killed that role in Pittsburg and has gamely played up the line-up in Edmonton.

I hope this team sticks with the Ekholm Bouchard pairing. They complement very well and Ekholm is an incredible steady, consistent, reliable on-ice tutor who helps the calming, maturation work still underway with young d-man Bouchard who's still under 200 regular season games. I don't think Bouchard would complement Nurse very well as a pairing.

Ekholm is able to work with anyone such is his strong ability to think the game, wisdom of a long road as an elite veteran d-man, and he's like another coach on the ice with his mentorship. I don't see that capacity with Nurse who has a high, innate impulsiveness to his game that aggressively attacks in defending. Nurse would benefit from a strong, structured veteran d-man.

Yea he's a great player. A true 775k for him is wild. It's crazy how we have these two players in McDrai, finally a playoff team, but we are never going to get a real discount on a good player to come play here. Just never going to happen.

Fact of the matter is nobody wants to come play in Edmonton unless we're offering the most amount of money.

I brought this up on the Got Yer Back Podcast. Is the solution as simple as just trading Brett Kulak? I know they like him and its a tough move but allows you to hit mutiple birds with one stone.

1. You give Broberg the icetime that he needs as a bottom pairing defenceman.
2. It opens up money so that you can sign Bouchard and McLeod to the deals that they need and maybe even give them some extra term.
3. Have money leftover to accrue cap space and ice a 22 man roster which is needed for TDL acquisitions.
4. You get an asset back from moving Kulak - he has value.

I think Holland needed to make a tough decision this offseason besides moving Yamamoto. Foegele, Kulak or Ceci. I like Kulak but I agree a lot with your reasons. We will see what happens though and how much McLeod/Bouchard get.
