Boston fans lost Hall, Bertuzzi, Orlov and Hathaway and still want Bergeron and Krejci to come back to go for it.

Colorado fans lost Landeskog, Compher, Rodriques, Newhook, Eller and Johnson but are still going for it.

Heck even Vancouver fans think they can win now that they added Cole and Soucy.

I was laughing to myself when I was watching Donnie and Dali saying that Vancouver doesnt need help at forward. They have no problem scoring goals - 13th in the league and I'm like wait a second my team was THE best in the league and were still complaining.

Edmonton improved by adding Brown over Yamamoto but somehow downgrading from Kostin to Holloway and suddenly this team isnt good enough. When did some of you become so negative?
I’m mostly salty that we clearly need a defensive upgrade, and instead of doing anything at all we did absolutely nothing.

GM’s have to be craftier than what Holland has been imo

If we get average goaltending we are the cup champions right now. No matter what our d did.

Our D was not bleeding chances all over the place in the playoffs, the goalie stunk. That is why we lost.
Goaltending was a big factor in this series. The bigger overriding issue was the discrepancy of own zone defending which was a critical factor in better insulation of the two inexperienced goaltenders.

Oil team own zone breakdowns well illustrated here:

Good breakdown of Vegas's strong, consistent and aggressive own zone defending here beginning at the 1 minute mark (look Mom, real backdoor coverage!):

Add the discrepancy of EV scoring which tilted to Vegas. Add Vegas Eichel line completely owning Draisaitl's second line.

I liked watching Cassidy's media avails throughout the series. Here's his thought on the Peter Angel suspension and need for their d-corp to cover for their elite defender's loss which they did very well unlike the Oilers trying to compensate Nurse's dumb instigator suspension (beginning around 6:45 mark):

The difference in this series was bigger than goaltending. There's a fundamental gap the Oilers team needs to climb to reach the summit of apex competition and it is goal suppression along with improvement in PK. Will need another personnel upgrade at top 4 RD in my strong belief.

They're rolling with Campbell Skinner this year. Good news is teams can win with average goaltending. It can't win without very good own zone goal suppression. This is the final mile for this team.

Lmaooooo, the Oilers have decimated the flames even more by the minute

Such a weird career. When the Flames got him it was like, ya, he’s having a bit of a down year, but he’s only 26 and coming off a monster year where he was arguably looking like a #2/3 dman… and it just never came back. That said, he was still a decent bottom pairing dman, even last year, so it’s kind of odd to retire after your 32 year old season.

Woodcoft's system is so bad they'll be making instructional videos from the footage. FAIL

It’s business. McLeod is like, our 9th best forward so there is only so much you can afford to pay him. Imho our entire top 6, Foegele and Janmark are better.
I like McLeod but if wants 2m or more, I would really have to think about it. He hasn’t really established himself as a 3C yet.

One of the most important roles of a guy like Ekholm is to train the young dmen. He is so solid that he will slow down the game for Broberg. We have seen what the master did with his student (Bouchard) last year. Now it is Broberg's turn

We are good enough to suffer the growing pains for 60 games but I would think this becomes an absolute legit pairing in the playoffs.
Ekholm might be able to give Broberg some more confidence and teach him a few things, but the areas I see Broberg faltering are often individual skill checks, both not making plays while pressured and also not successfully completing routine plays (particularly in the d-zone) at the levels of consistency expected from an NHL player.

Where as with Bouchard I feel like all the big pieces were already in place he was doing the right things, but to me it felt like he was second guessing himself, he knew what the correct play was to make, but he was asking himself is my partner going to pick up on it and cover for him. With Ekholm all the self doubt and second guessing went out the window, he knows someone will be back there if he wants to take an offensive chance and Ekholm and him are both phenomenal at holding the blueline for zone entry denials, but it can be easily punished if your partner isn't on the same page as you.

I think more soft minutes is the right play for Broberg it's the easiest way to build confidence, the pressure of people forechecking you hard is less frequent and you generally don't get punished as hard for mistakes. I think a big part of why J. Schultz failed to prosper here is cause we put too much on his plate too early, I'm not a big believer in Broberg, but lets keep things in bite sized pieces for him a step at a time.

The time has passed to move McLeod. Holland needed to be proactive.

McLeod would have been an excellent chip in a trade package.

Now McLeod's an arbitration case. Likely gets signed for too much money before his hearing.

Better players with "the potential to file for arbitration" weren't even qualified.

Too much confusion especially with a team whose core strength is high speed transitional attack offence. They need to simplify own zone defending by eliminating man on man defending which is too prone to d-men chasing forwards out of high danger scoring areas with this forward group struggling to cover off those adventures. Oil are vulnerable to smart teams finding open seams in high danger areas and generally poor at net front defending.

McLeod + for Schiefele at 50%

Picks/prospects for Pesce (3rd party retains 50%)

Ceci for a pick

Would be expensive to pull that off and both are likely to walk after the year.

Only counts if arbitration is awarded. If he signs before that no window
Not true. Now that he's filed for arbitration. Once he is signed, whether it is settled before arbitration or he is awarded an amount, the Oilers will get a 2nd buyout window that lasts 48 hours.

Buyouts Outside of the Regular Period

Clubs whom have 1 or more arbitration filings may be permitted to perform a buyout outside of the regular window. This gives teams another opportunity to become cap compliant following an arbitration case.

Clubs are permitted to perform a buyout outside the regular period during the 48 hour period beginning on the third day after the final of [CBA 13(c)ii]:
  1. Settlement of the Club's final arbitration case, or
  2. Receipt of the Club's last arbitration award

But its a bit late to buyout Campbell at this stage I think. Unless we're going after Gibson or Hellybuck

I think Holland should allow McLeod's agent to talk to other teams so they know his contract demands.

There's going to be some people here (or at least 1 anyway :) ) that likely say they would have rather had Kostin in the lineup for $2 million than McLeod for $2 million... if indeed it does cost that to sign him.

How do you know McLeod is only looking for 2M? I think you assume a contract might be for less. It could be for more.

Well I don't know the dollar amount he's looking for... but point being that some here would have likely preferred the package of traits/skills that Kostin brings over what McLeod brings... if indeed their contracts are going to be in the same ballpark cap-hit wise.

Anybody here watch at ton of QMJHL that might know if Lavoie and Zadina played together alot in Halifax? Their offensive outputs that year were fairly strong.

  • A player who has elected for salary arbitration is ineligible to receive an Offer Sheet
That's from CapFriendly.

Saying that though, up until now... teams were free to talk to McLeod as he was a free agent... so I'm sure his agent has an idea of what the market might be willing to offer for this type of player.
