Would that have protected us from what happened? If so why doesn't everyone do it that way?

My understanding is that the best strategy is to waive a player is to do so when everyone else does, which is what we did

Wouldn't have protected us if Vegas still wanted him. Letting the dust settle a bit though, maybe you give Vegas a chance to grab some other player or make other moves, or just settle in with what they have and forget about Lavoie and whatever little game they are playing.

Still no guarantees of course.

Just everyone brace yourselves for Lavoie's eventual hat trick against us.

Just take the hit and move on.
Agreed. If the Oilers really wanted Lavoie they had ample opportunity to keep him. They re-signed Perry, traded for Podz, re-signed Janmark, re-signed Brown and could’ve waived Ryan or Perry. Those are all bottom 6 players…let’s face it, the Oilers interest in Lavoie is luke warm at best. I’m actually surprised they put a claim in but I guess they probably wanted to try and save face.

The only reason Lavoie stings is cause of the bare cupboards but really a 24 year old with 7 career NHL games isn't really anything that valuable, and only 2 out of 32 teams in the league outside of edmonton showed any real interest, and then sent him down to the AHL. He's not an NHL level player unfortunately. So it's bad asset management but he's not really worth much to begin with.

So Gregor had Craig Button on his show on the drive home. He told Craig that he thought Colorado put in the claim the first time but then decided not to the 2nd time when they saw Kahkonen. He thought fans are crazy of they thought it was some sort of back door deal. So he asked Craig and his response was surprising.

Button said that lots of stuff happens behind closed doors and after hours. He said he wouldn't rule it out and that it happens. Button even went on to say he's done it.

Apparently he was able to acquire Dean McAmmond for cheap because of it.

He even said that teams trade information and help each other out knowing that those gms owe them one.
Of course it happens. Why wouldn't it. GMs talk with eachother, negotiate with eachother, trade favors, find ways to benefit their teams.

That's why connections are important in this League. That's why despite being senile, Holland was able to use this connections to get us out of some binds.

What's done is done though. Broberg and Holloway, 2 stud prospects are lost for barely anything. Lavoie was stolen-ish.

I don't expect Bowman to be able to prevent these situations, he came into this situation with hands tied behind his back, cap space already used in free agency, just reacting to what was already in place by the Holland and JJ.

But Bowman better start showing some teeth fast, cause this team's future is looking bleak right now.

You get it.

He’s valuable because it’s what’s left over. But it’s like saying the moldy loaf of bread in the cupboard is desirable. The team needs to win now and be damned about what the future looks like. Once the window closes then you start the rebuild all over again.

This exactly. People are upset about losing Broberg and Holloway and tying this on with that.

Ultimately the main issue is Holland’s piss poor drafting.

That's a goalie though.

But I agree there's no conspiracy. It's just a gamble Vegas took, and it's not like there was a scenario that cost them anything so it just makes sense

I hope maybe how pathetic our prospect pool is will make us a prime destination for prospect UFAs from college or the KHL or wherever
It’s still a roster spot, they can’t just claim 10 guys if they don’t have the open roster spots

The idea this was poor asset management is silly imo

Lavoie's value is in the AHL, Bako got worse, it doesn't really effect the Oilers. He wasn't making the team, so he was bound to get waived again, not sure what the surprise is over. Vegas waived him too, because he can't make their NHL team either, and we are way deeper in forwards
