That's why this whole preservation of cap thing is a risk Imo.The scary thing is, what if we can't make a trade for something we want on D? Then what?
The teams issue is it seems like they completely expect Kane to come back mid season which means we can't even use his LTIR to improve the team. Its a dumb situation to be in.That's why this whole preservation of cap thing is a risk Imo.
We will know in a few hours. So are we getting back Lavoie or not??
Swayman really did reset the market
We don't have to worry about Seattle but we do have to worry about Stuart Skinner getting overpaid for below to average goaltendingOr its similar to Jones/Nurse extensions.
Sometimes you need to wait it out a bit. Meanwhile Francis gave Daccord for $5m. Guess we don’t have to really worry about Seattle for the next 5+ years
I think we’ll miss Ceci. He’s an NHL veteran who’s played top 4 minutes for just about his whole career. He’s better than we give him credit for and he’ll be a very good defensemen for the sharks and what we had last year is 100% better than what we have today and you’re kidding yourself if you believe otherwise. However we just need to make it work until Stan pulls something out of his ass hopefully and then it’s our cup to win. I also wish we had improved with a more reliable backup.
Yes. I think Stan will be on the phones all year. You cannot just wait until the deadline and say "Hey we got all of this cap space now, we're gunna load Uppppp!" lol. That's why this whole preservation of cap thing is a risk Imo.
Bruce Curlock had a really good write up about Emberson and why he might be the perfect partner for Nurse. He’s liked him for awhile.I assume Vinny had big feet so those shoes are big to fill
But seriously on Ceci I thought he was worth his contract, but couldn't keep up as an everyday top 4 d-man. He played 20 minutes a night and while I hope Emberson can fill in that is gonna be tough.
Vinny, I always thought was that perfect #6 d-man to play 70 games a year or so. Easy to replace that, but his size and PK abilities will be something that needs to be replaced.
It's not that I don't think those guys can't be replaced, but we aren't exactly replacing them with sure fire guys. I've seen this song and dance for decades now that we just hope someone is going to fill the void and have breakout years. Not sure the guys we have give me a whole pile of confidence in that.
Although it was clear with the July 1st moves that we were going top heavy, so hopefully the offense makes up for the lack of defense
I thought Ceci was a solid Oiler, liked having him here. But he really only had one spot on the roster, and that was playing with Nurse. And they completely fell apart in the second half of last season. If I remember correctly, they both started getting caved after Knoblauch was hired. I always thought they'd figure it out, and wasn't super concerned about them going into the playoffs, but they never did.
I argued that it was okay to go back to the playoffs with that pairing last year, but it really wouldn't be tenable to do it again this year. Whether you think Ceci or Nurse was the problem on that pairing, Nurse is staying, so keeping Ceci really didn't make any sense. The cap space that they created by moving Ceci is more valuable than keeping Ceci.
I am looking forward to watching Emberson, haven't seen him at all in the preseason. If he works out, it would be such a huge win.
I will say the worse case is none of the 3 are better, I can see reasons why one might optimistic, but let's be real none of those 3 have established an average level of play that clearly outshines either Ceci or Vinny.
Shesterkin is about to do the goalies a big favor soon
We are actually! $53 away from the cap is my understanding. So I presume we are not longer accruing cap space?
Who cares? We couldn't have afforded them.Sweet Broberg scored from Holloway. f*** this management.
Last 3 years before joining the Oil...
Ceci
74 GP, 7-19-26, -22. 22:34 TOI
56 GP, 1-7-8, +7, 20:32 TOI
53 GP, 4-13-17, +18, 18:31 TOI
Kulak
56 GP, 0-7-7, -1. 17:08 TOI
46 GP, 2-6-8, +3, 16:06 TOI
56 GP, 3-10-13, -10, 17:58 TOI
Stecher
29 GP, 1-2-3, -7 16:29
81 GP, 3-11-14, -6, 16:22
47 GP, 1-4-5, +5, 18:26
Stecher's more or less identical to Kulak's minutes and production before he got to Edmonton, and isn't far off Ceci's. Which more or less lines up as a solid #5 that can moonlight as a #4. That's also a good bit ahead of the 13 to 15 min PK specialist that Vinny was here.
The Oil do need to add a big, physically dominant, defensive defenceman that can play regular minutes before they get to the playoffs (Josh Manson being the closest thing to the perfect fit. Not saying he's available). But what they've got should be more than fine for the regular season.
Imo, the big question with this group isn't if they're good enough (for the regular season), it's if the ones that are made of glass can stay healthy.
I mean Daccord got $25 million today.
What the hell is Skinner gonna ask for in 2026?
If the Oilers would have signed Holloway earlier, which I think was possible, a lot could have been avoided.Who cares? We couldn't have afforded them.

That is on Holland.
Swayman really did reset the market
Add another scoring forwardThe scary thing is, what if we can't make a trade for something we want on D? Then what?
If it wasn't for the Connor Brown bonus, the Oilers would've signed Broberg for like 1.6 x 2 (his agent's ask was apparently 1.8) and Holloway probably for about 1.4.
Instead they were trying to Ryan McLeod both of them and paid the price. Thanks Holland.
Thought Tanev said no as wellHad we kept Ceci he would have been a required piece going the other way in any trade. This is essentially just pre-trading him to create flexibility on probably the safe gamble that any drop off from Ceci to Emberson isn't going to be the end of the world.
Based on the rumours last year that we had a deal for Tanev, but they didn't want Ceci back, I wonder if management saw this move as a requirement in order to do what they need to do at the deadline. Much easier to do a deal straight up, player for picks without the burden of finding a home for your cap casualty.
It's on Jackson as well. He's the one that elected to burn up cap space before taking care of his own playersIf the Oilers would have signed Holloway earlier, which I think was possible, a lot could have been avoided.
That is on Holland.
Or Nurse could just nut up and be that player. There's no reason he can't be a good, physical no.3 D. First step is getting Nurse away from Ceci, they are poison for each other's game.
