You can't see the logic in pumping a guys tires if you think you may trade him? What's he gonna do, go on and say "nah, he's trash. Honestly I'd accept the first offer i got on him"
They just traded Chycrun for him, he is in their top for as a RD, they really like him. There is your logic.

Watching some OHLclips kinda related to what we should do about our D. Watching Akey...that guy has some interesting feet lol.
Too bad we didn't get Lukas instead of Paul from St. Louis.
Wakely has a shot. Is it because he is an overager and is stronger than those around him? Haven't really watched him play at all but will now if we don't trade Akey away.

Why are we talking about trading assets for a 4C when we have a 26 year old right shot 4C available to us down in the AHL on a league min deal? Philp isn't a young player anymore. He looked good in the preseason. Has looked good in the AHL and looked good in his brief stint in the NHL.
Thank god somebody said it. This stupid ass organization needs to give their youth a chance for a change instead of scouring the market for old stopgap solutions, not that Philp is that young but point still stands. There's no reason the Oilers should be in the market for a 4C.

I'm sure they do like him, he is a good player having a good year. But at 34yo, with the team in the basement, there isn't much sense in keeping him for this year. Next year, maybe things turn around for the team and he would be valuable to them. Or maybe he decides he doesn't like Ottawa and they lose him for nothing in FA, or maybe he goes for half the cost he would currently as a rental with only a couple months left.

Idk what the Senators plan is, but assuming that just because the GM spoke highly of a player that player is off limits, is stupid.

And if they are in the market for one, it should only be after they’ve called up Philp and played him for the next 20+ games and he’s shown he can’t handle it. Derek Ryan is playing less than 10 minutes a game. Playing Philp those minutes is not going to make or break the team.

100%. Give him a shot so that we aren't pissing away assets on a guy that is a downgrade or equal to the guy that we have waiting in the wings. Philp checks so many boxes. He's big, fast, RH, has good hockey IQ, and is on a cheap deal. Ryan is done. You can't tell me that Philp wouldn't be an upgrade on Ryan.

I think his game on the south side will improve in the A. With Philp isn;t it really a matter of timing?
What does a high quality 4C do? They burn the energy of the oppositions top line or take up time of their best checking line so their own top line has more space and time.
They need superior skating being big and defensive down the middle of the ice and be able cycle the shit out of the puck.

Philp is mostly there but needs to max his defensive abilities. Lets give him another 20 games before we try him for 5 or 10 here.

Random thought:

What if they play Ryan mostly the first half of the season, then call up Philp to replace him, so Ryan is eligible for the Stanley Cup if we win? I know Ryan just has to appear in one Stanley Cup final game, but maybe this was their plan and then bump him to the Press Box. Just a random thought.

That wouldn't be the best way to run a team IMO.

Either I read or heard it on a podcast (I apologize I don’t remember which platform) that he’s been challenged with “processing the game at speed” down in the AHL. Does anyone recall that being said. It was recent (maybe Chaulk on Bobs show?). If there is truth to that maybe they really want him to polish his game down south before another call up and he struggles?

I’ve said it before but I would rather run 13F than 7D if accruing cap space is so important. Dermott brings nothing for me. I don’t think Ryan is an everyday player. Team should get Philp up sooner than later. I don’t think Ryan has a place on the roster when everyone is healthy anyway

I doubt that anyone would claim Dermott unless they had a lot of injuries on D.

It might not even be Philp coming up at 4C. Hopefully Jarventie comes back healthy and they play him at C.

He single handedly carried the Rangers thru the playoffs last year.
Don't get me wrong. I would love him here lol. He is going to want a ton of $$. I watched him last playofsfs. I guess that is what you pay for. When he is "on", he is unbelievable.

Rangers never impress me. They are propped up by goaltending.

I have been on the Philp train all season. At least give him an extended look in the NHL (prior to the TDL) so the team knows what it has.

Philp is still coming back from a year off, I think it’s smart to give him time to get back up to speed playing lots of minutes in the A before you bring him up to be a full time 4C playing 8-9 minutes a night in the bigs.

That said you still want enough time to get a good sample on him before the trade deadline, I’d say bring him up right after the holidays and play him in that 4C spot full time and work Ryan in on the fourth line every now and then. He’s been a good soldier but he isn’t an every day player at this point, he’s an excellent 13th though.

It's so typical Oilers to look elsewhere for a position instead of internally of their prospects especially for a 4C spot. Let Philp play up here asap and give him more games instead of a cup of coffee type of run. Have they not learned from the Barrie over Bouchard, Janmark over Holloway, or random crap over Broberg? Use that 'Looking for a 4C' precious cap space on more important matters like the goalies or that top four D.

Looks like he’s only played 2 games. Honestly not sure about him at this point. I don’t see him getting games with this team personally.
You realize this kid played 15 games at center for the Belleville Senators and excelled at it right. Almost a point per game and his vision/passing was really good. When they switched him from wing to center it was like they motivated him.
Watch some clips on him and you will see his passing. In the second game he made a sublime pass to Savoie that was capitalized on. Should be easy to find.

My reluctance is actually more on the team than the players. I feel like Philp had a great preseason and can’t get games. I think Jarventie is pushing a rock up a hill. The Oilers don’t seem to like giving their young players much opportunity.
