It's the same main core for the team. They've been awful to start both years, last year however was definitely worse defensively, it's not even particularly close. Because convienantly forgot all that because they made a Cup Final and now want to act like this is something new.

Believe it or not this the best GA they've had at game 21 in the last three seasons

This year: 67 GA in first 21 games
24-25: 78 GA in first 21 games
22-23: 74 GA in first 21 games

This team just loves to start seasons like shit, it's been 3 years in a row of this. The only good start they had was the start of the 21-22 season where they were 15-5 under Tippet (and then blew it by losing a ton of games in December).

20-21 (Canadian division year) was another shit start, 3-6, thankfully they pulled it together relatively quickly after that because it was only a 56 game season. So 4 bad starts in 5 years. At this point this is not an aberration but the norm.
Yeah, I have a hard time being concerned about this team, or even caring at all, when they just went to a cup final game 7.

It's a veteran team that knows that they're not playing up to their standards, and has to figure it out. I'm mostly concerned about Nugent-Hopkins and Henrique to be honest, I'm not sure either look like they're capable of breaking out of the funk. But as long as the team continues to carry the play for the most part, as they have been, I think they'll get going pretty soon.

Fabbro has looked good since arriving in Columbus. Short sample but he’s 3pts and +1 in 5 games, averaging almost 21 minutes a night against against some tough competition. His defensive metrics have always been pretty strong, and so far he seems to be holding up with top 4 minutes. I still think he could be a great option for Oilers that they could probably extend at a reasonable cap hit.
Don’t tell that to Jim Matheson. Fabbro wasn’t worth claiming according to that moron

Not gonna lie, these are some of the most incredible saves I've ever seen in my life and I've watched a fair share of hockey in my life.

This guy's top end gear is unbelievable. If this player is still in there ... I think you win a Cup, maybe two. When he is on his game, he is unreal.

Crazy idea but if Carter Hart is acquitted he could be the savior in net. Doubt that ends up a this season thing though could be a summer ordeal again IF he’s acquitted.

Can't believe you have the Hart to bring this up

What could have been if Anaheim traded him like 5 years ago

EDM 1st 26 + S. Skinner for Jiricek + Fabbro @50% retained

EDM 2nd + prospect for John Gibson @33% retained (saves Anaheim a bunch of money even w/ retention).

Dump J. Skinner.

I don't think the devil we know is good enough. My problem is the last time Gibson showed he was elite was 2018-19 and we have zero idea if he would be better than what we have. Younger, better numbers even this year, expiring contract and much cheaper Blackwood is a more enticing gamble to me, more than Gibson for three more years at 50% ($3.2). Blackwood at full pop is $2.35. With a late pick for a 3rd team to take half, you could probably be into Blackwood at $1.175.

Blackwood would be my target as well but honestly would just be happy not to see that clown Skinner in net at this point

Not sure if it would of mattered who was in net last game because that was a poor effort at playing hockey

Is he? He's been brutal in Anaheim for years.
Easy answer. Take a look at Hampus Lindholm and how well he's doing on another team. Before you bring up Henrique, he was always supposed to be a 3C for us. Oilers fans were overrating him that he was going to be a top 6 player for us. He's exactly where he's supposed to be.

Hahahahahaha imagine Skinner behind that defence.
But that doesn't make Gibson any less brutal. His GAA has been >3 for most of the last five years in addition to health concerns.

Goaltending is still a different beast as goalies tend to blend in with the systems around them. It took YEARS for Bobrovsky to be the goalie Florida thought he would be when he was brought in.

It didn't take that long for Keuemper in Colorado

But then you look at Georgiev....

More often than not the most successful teams have their goalies drafted by them and homegrown.

And anyway, Dustin Schwartz still exists, will scout a shitty goalie and we'll set ourselves back another year or two.

The Athletic is reporting it so take it for what it’s worth.
I’m on team waste no picks or capital on a goalie until we know what we have with Rodrigue.

Despite how bad we have been in getting results we are still within closing distance of the division. The panic button doesn’t need to hit yet.

Everyone has players they like. Nothing wrong with that.

The "fanboy" thing is silly.

There's liking a player and then there's those that back Nuge to the end. I swear McDrai take more flack than Nuge.

There's a reason some jokingly call him Teflon Nuge.

Kuemper won a cup.

Not sure why you keep bring up Schwartz. He's awful. We know that. Pickard is still playing better than Stuart and he's doing exactly what a backup is supposed to do. Stuart sucks with or without Schwartz

Dwayne Roloson is an example as well even if that's super dated.
Mike Smith and Talbot. All were good and miles better than Stuart

the goaltending and defence are directly related. if you go budget cost saving on both, youre f'd. but if you address one it covers for the other. Thats why our offseason was moronic. You go with your budget goaltending again and cut a bunch of defencemen for league min guys. good.

I mean even at 50%, 3.2m is tough for cap strapped Oil. Unless Gibson miraculously fixes our 2nd pairing

Yeah he did, behind probably one of the best teams of the cap era. That team was an absolute buzzsaw, something we saw firsthand. They scored at will, something we currently cannot do.

Pickard is "better", but only marginally so. I bring up Schwartz because he's the goalie scout. There's a reason goaltending has been so bad for so long. He's it.
