Yeah that horse was definitely dead long before you started beatin’ it.

The Oilers scored 1 goal. Thats a losing effort. Nothing else matters, our goaltending was irrelevant.

Defencemen take longer, probably longer than our window. What you need is a guy that you’ve already been slow-playing and developing for 4 or 5 years so they are ready to contribute. You know, someone like that guy on St.Louis, whats his name again? Philip B.?

It really feels like it was just that. Columbus has a bunch of RD in his way. We had too much LD.

Fixing our defense for a cup run would be awesome but it would be great to get younger as well.

And btw just looking at how great an impact Broberg was having on the Blues, it's not like getting the young player with more potential than proven pedigree guarantees short term suffering. It can be the right move for the future AND for today.

Chasing a proven talent is no guarantee either, as we've seen with Arvidsson and Skinner.

A team as old and slow as ours should be adding high end young talent

Does skinners stats get better or worse if he was a duck and vice versa?

The simple eye test shows how much better gibson is then skinner. And Skinner is litterally putting up echl type numbers right now

That makes a lot of sense considering Jiricek could be poached like Broberg at the end of the season.

Preds may have a bit of buyer's remorse after just extending Carrier.

I'd guess that Jiricek would be pumped to be an Oiler and would sign an extension to go along with the trade

Edit:never mind about the extension. He's got another year after this one.

Your name checks out.

I'd be happy to see Edmonton grab a prospect like Jiricek to fill the hole left by the Broberg offersheet. But realistically he's in the same boat that Broberg was in the past two seasons, struggling to gain any traction as an NHL defenseman. He may not help the roster today and that makes it difficult to eat the likely cost considering the Oilers' only goal this season is winning the Cup.

They can grab whatever high end d-man they want- it’s not going to solve the problem. The oilers already are amongst league leaders in least amount of scoring chances given up. How much more can they move the needle? The problem is goaltending. Skinner is dead last in goals saved above expected. He is behind every single starter and every single backup in the league. Since his rookie year- the Oilers defence has continually improved and Skinners numbers have gone the opposite way. His numbers are worse than Campbell’s last year when he was sent down. The love affair with this guy needs to end

Our window to win should be at least 6+ years if management can build this team properly. They should be looking at what we need to win I was well as in the future. We should be looking at how the Wings and Penguins teams that had like a 20 year window to win. Adding a potential stud prospect like Jiricek helps that.

I think windows come in waves, I think our current window is 1 year, then raises for Bouchard + Drai + McDavid diminish our ability to properly fill out a competitive roster, outside of a masterclass in GMing I think we will have a 2-3 year lul where we fall from the top of the pack to 2nd tier contenders. After 3-ish years the salary cap likely rises enough that those big contracts feel more manageable our 2nd Cup window opens up, a lot of factors will play in to that, but ideally you want 3-5 years of being a top contender again.

As evidenced by this years FA season, you can set a team back 1-2 years in terms of how you can rebuild and repair. I don’t think the window is 6+. Maybe be 2-3 tops. And that’s assuming corrections taken are positive and can repair some significant holes at all three levels of this club.

Eric Lindros and Marcel Dionne are interested in how this works out.
