Probably helped that we had a generational defenseman on the blue line at the time.

Oh, and the team worked their ass off to win.

If this team had the work ethic of the 06 team they’d have multiple Cups by now. Pronger was also playing while the team was running with Conklin/Markinen and we were getting lit up and barely made the playoffs. Having a steady goalie like Roloson completely changed the team. If this team gets a reliable goalie at the deadline then we’re going far in the playoffs.

They did last year. They were absolutely fearless despite the numerous deficits they faced. This year they seem resigned to their fate.

It's a big If, but if Savoie can play and contribute somewhat similar to Jake Guentzel in 2017 that would be huge! I will theorize that If Savoie keeps up the good play that Drai will request to play with him. (Drai and Mcdavid seem to get what they want for line mates. Rightfully so)

McDavid is definitely having an off year this year.

Last Year:

This Year:

1740440138756.png

Overall his GF/60 dropped from 6.17 down to 4.84 this year. He's scoring at -1.33 GF/60 this year (78% of what he had last year).

Meanwhile, his GA/60 this year is the same as it was last year- 3.03 GA/60. He's also seen a consistent SF% from 63.67 last year to 63.87 this year.

We're seeing about 4 less shots / 60 while Mcdavid is on the ice.

He's not getting as many looks this year with a drop of 6 Scoring changes / 60.

To make matters worse, he has also seen a drop in his HDGF/60 from 3.44 last year down to 2.29 HDBG/60 this year (66.6% of what he had last year).

This is why you just write this year off, sell and fix things in the offseason.

I’ve seen some online say they think if Skinner is traded he will go on to play well elsewhere like Dubnyk

Note that Dubnyk played under some of the worst Oilers teams of all time, and one of the worst coaches of the post lockout era

Skinner is playing for a team chasing the cup I don’t think they are comparable
Unfortunately the reality is Dubnyk played under Frederic Chabot and never worked with Schwartz. Non ironically Chabot was hired shortly after by Minnesota Wild which overlapped with Dubnyk's time there.

Dubnyk was a first round pedigree goaltender who was beaten down behind a tire fire scorched earth rebuild organization that was badly managed over multiple management groups. There's a good interview around with an NHL management consultant who did a deep dive on NHL Draft results over more than a decade. One conclusion he found is that NHL teams often gave up too early on their pedigree goaltender draft picks. Dubnyk is a good example.

Skinner was a mid-range prospect within an organization that showed zero belief in the position. Their goaltending 'strategy' was largely to recycle old, established thirty-something goaltenders and waste a volume of middling draft picks over a decade hoping to find an NHL goalie needle in the draft haystack. Then through generational money at a red flag mentally weak Jack Campbell to steer their course through the Window years. Skinner's a project who should still be growing into a solid backup right now not keeping his head above water.

It's a poor organizational strategy and decision making that's put this team in this situation.

Is that surprising though? McDavid is a fun player on both ends of the ice. Stacking that top line is sometimes a double edged sword.

It is surprising for a few reasons:

1. McDavid almost has the same expected goals last year (2.59 xGA/60) to this year (2.68 xGA/60).

2. Draisaitl actually has a much higher save% at 90.61% than Connor who only has 86.49%.

3. Connor saw his on ice save % drop from last year from 87.98% to 86.49% this year.

So if "McDrai is a double edge sword why is it worse than last year and why is McDavid's save % lower than Draisaitl?"

Seravalli says Oilers are walking on eggshells because they don’t know if Kane is back before or after the deadline and they will have a better understanding by March 1st. Bowman how could you not know the status of one of your good players

TSN did a thing about EDM needing goaltending and that they should go after Gibson but only if the team can keep skinner. What is this fascination with this guy in the media? He's absolute trash. I'd rather keep pikard as the back up at this point. lol.

Honestly, unless it's a slam-dunk goalie like Saros, keeping Skinner with whoever comes in is probably ideal. I have always been a Gibson fan. But I think replacing Pickard, not Skinner, with Gibson is the best option.

My guess, is a deal where the Canes move Taylor Hall, Fredrick Andersen, 2027 2nd and 2025 4th for Gibson($2.4M retained)

Then the Oilers can acquire Anderson and Hall from Anaheim, everybody wins...?

I don’t think they’d make this move if Gibson isn’t being moved but that’s my opinion lol
Husso has NHL experience and is coming for free. It's basically free cap for Detroit. I think, depending what happens, they don't want one of their kids or the AHL starter to be the back up.
