And the whole issue with this discussion is generally about how simple some think that the solution is simply because of how poor they suggest the Oilers' current situation is.

Reality is that the goalie market is less than stellar. The Oilers have limited cap space. And the team also have other areas they should address prior to the playoffs.

Gibson has a frequent injury history to go along with the last half decade of poor goaltending. We're seeing the risk in real time.

This would have any relevance if the Oilers had tried… anything. They have not.

Skinner is a known quantity of not being good enough here. What they should have done was picked up cheap insurance in the offseason, but they didn’t. So they will have to take a risk by either staying the course, or gambling on someone who is available

Wake me up when its trade deadline.
Good thing I've been busy working full time so I don't have to watch Sievenner in net.

The fact that we haven't tried anything is what props up Skinner. People bring up his stats not being good enough compared to other goalies but every team is unique so you can't truly compare goalies between different teams, unless you bring in a goalie from a different team.

The uncertainty is what kills me. There are a lot of pundits out there that just love Skinner and use his game 7 Finals appearance as proof he's good, like if the team elevates, so will Skinner. So it's not that his poor play is random, and that when the chips are down he will bring the goods, as long as the team does

Pickard is a bit of a canary in the coal mine for me. His stats got a boost from coming here, and hes been in the league long enough that we know what he is. That tells me that it can't be the team's fault that Skinner's stats are bad.

I think an amazing Deadline would be

Arivdsson, O'Reilly, Akey and a 1st(2026) for Rantanen ($1.625M retained)

Pickard, 2025 2nd and 2026 4th for Vejmelka (50% retainted)

Kapanen, Jarventie & 2027 2nd for Olekiask ($1.6M retainted) and John Hayden (AHL/NHL tweener veteran RHC)

Then in the playoffs you look like

Rantanen - McDavid - Hyman
Skinner - Draisaitl - Podkolzin
Kane - Nuge - Perry
Janmark - Henrique - Brown
Savoie, Hayden, Ryan

Ekholm - Bouchard
Oleksiak - Nurse
Kulak - Emberson
Klingberg, Stetcher

Vejmelka
Skinner
I would rather go after Tuch than Rantanen as I think we can do it without O’Reilly. We need to keep a few young prospects that will give us some youth. If we are lucky we will have enough to resign Tuch as with Rantanen we can’t afford to resign.

Yeah, those proposals completely bankrupt the Oilers future. If you're giving up that much capital in draft/prospects we need to get some longer term pieces back. The playoffs are too much of a crap shoot to invest that much into one shot. Maybe if Rantanen had an extension in place. But even then... it's a lot to give up.

I love the idea of Tuch, but are the Sabres actually interested in trading him? He's still signed for next season and is from the area is he not? I thought he was one of the guys who was committed to being in Buffalo. There can't be many guys like that around for the Sabres.

The forward pool is mediocre so is the D at this deadline. There isn't a Hyman or Ekholm tier add there unless you're getting somehow getting like Rantanen which will cost a small fortune both in assets and cost to resign.

We've wasted a shit ton of money on poor forward investments too. 4 million on Arvidsson. 3 million on Skinner. Almost 4 million to have Connor Brown this year. 5 million+ on Evander Kane. 3 million on Henrique.

Kane's injury woes are unfortunate but the bottom line is that's almost $20 million spent in forwards who frankly don't bring enough to the table and none of them are even locks to play in the top 6.

Poor management in a nutshell.

The price on Tuch is likely to be steep too, a 1st + O'Reilly perhaps, I don't see Buffalo being in a rush to trade him at all. He's on pace for 28 goals, our 1st isn't even a 2025 1st.
