He isn't a significant upgrade over Skinner. Is that a hot take? Very similar stats on teams with drastically different levels of defence quality.
Edmontons team defense has been better than Nashvilles this year. 2.54xGA/60 vs Nashvilles 2.84xGA/60

Yeah I agree it's probably still not enough to convince anyone to take Campbell back.

I'd think about adding more if we had anything else left lol

I would add basically whatever Nashville wanted, as long as it wasn't current roster players. Saros in net for the remainder of the McDrai window would mean we would be cup contenders in each of those years. I would legit be surprised if we DIDN'T win a cup with him in net. 3 bullets in the chamber to win a cup, with a pretty good chance of success in all 3 years (pretty good being likely >25% or so, so still low of course). Sign me up. He is also young enough that you wouldn't expect a decline during those years either. Sigh, if only.

That definitely seems to be the consensus. They're scared to death of losing profits and doing anything Edmonton does.

If anything, a Bedard would increase profits.
It’s funny for a team that suffers from little brother syndrome as much as they do, you would think they would WANT to follow the same path to glory

I saw my fair share of tats in 2004, but prior to that year the city did not care one iota about the Flames. Can't say I really blame them as they were stuck in perpetual medicority.

Hey, kinda like now. Man Calgary you had the chance of a lifetime to tank for a legit superstar and you're going to end up picking around 16th yet again.
Oh yeah before that. The city was quiet about the flames.

2004 was good for the city. But after that it just faded again.

It’s an odd fan base like I’ve stated for many reasons. On a personal level I like to see a city that cares about its team. It’s good for local bars etc.

But yeah like I mentioned a couple days back. Down 3-1 to the oilers last year and the bar me and my oilers buddies were in was half empty. And barely anyone was wearing a jersey.

Like this is the battle of Alberta. Sure it’s an elimination game, but frick. Support your team!!! Bizarre…

A guy like Ekholm makes everybody better, it's a chain effect. Ekholm's presence eases the workload for Nurse and Ceci (that's two), Ekholm makes Bouchard better by being his safety net on that pairing (that's three), Ekholm makes Kulak better because he can focus on a softer minutes pure 3rd pairing role (that's four) and Ekholm makes Broberg better because he's a Swedish (Viking?) Mentor.

He's not Chris Pronger or anything like that but he was the best available option on the market for the Oilers from a needs standpoint and his wife loves the cold and snow, what more could you want.
But now they've gone and upset poor Ryan Rishaug!

What’s he supposed to do ? Fight him? Oh and he still scored that game.

I’m not saying don’t trade yams but I doubt Lavoie will just jump in and be better than him.
What should he do? Give his legs the Gerbe/St Louis treatment. Become a pylon that appears to defy physics. He already may have huge legs though in which case he is boned

You know what?

Done.
Yep, agreed. Heavy, heavy price but if you're getting a top 5 goalie in the world (I'd argue top 3) who is only 27 and locked up fairly cheaply for the next 2+ seasons, you do it. I know goalies are voodoo but Saros is one of the few legit great ones in the league. Total pipedream though.
I do like Skinner quite a bit though so I think we'll be ok with him going forward.

I don't think we need one. 5 of our 6 top six players are top 20 wingers/centres in the NHL. Having one who is not as good hardly ruins anything. He can win puck battles, has good hockey iq and is at the right place at the right time. He just can't finish as good as a top six forward

He can't play 5x5 defense. So if he's not scoring and doesn't provide defense then he isn't needed in the top 6.

We need an upgrade.

Meh if he does it means we lose in the finals which would not be a bad thing either. Of course we want the cup but even getting to the finals would show MCDrai just how close we actually are.
If we make it to the finals, I wouldn't take that for granted cause that may be the only final we see in the McDrai era. If Campbell is the reason we lose in the finals, it's pretty monumental

At the end of the day, this isn't a season anymore for this team to go ALL in, especially on rentals. And really there isn't much left out there. If there are some players with term we can easily fit in that are clear improvements (like Ekholm) do it. But with how much the east has loaded up and with how shaky our goaltending currently is. I don't see that we are a Yamamoto or Ceci upgrade away from beating the Bruins in 7.

True anything could happen but any valuable trades Holland makes need to be for players with term. We will hve to see whats done today but I don't see any of those trades happen league wide.

Bjugstad was arguably the best forward defensively for Arizona while playing top 6 minutes. Slot him up there. Voila. Upgrade.

It's because they got "so close" last year and thought they were a simple retool away from going further. The Oilers broke that franchise yet ironically also gave them the perfect excuse to rebuild entirely.

Instead they went the Minnesota Wild route and that route never leads anywhere pleasant.

Make no mistake, this is the darkest year in Calgary Flames history. Trapped into many awful long term contracts and no blue chip prospects on the horizon.

Toronto goes pretty hard. That fan base is pretty crazy

And I mean. Vancouver did riot :)

You mean this fanbase crazy?

The Calgary inferiority complex transcends sport. For whatever reason, they love spending labour hours worrying about Edmonton and comparing everything, and diminishing Edmonton's strengths.

Grow up.

I mean, it's clear we still badly need a RHD better than any RHD we currently have.
An RD upgrade would be a nice luxury to have, but I think back to the Lightning teams that recently won a cup and they just leaned heavily on their LHD of Hedman, McDonaugh, and Sergachev and I also think back to the Ducks that won the cup they just leaned heavily on their LHD Pronger and Niedermayer. A central difference is ofcourse of those 5 names we are looking at what will likely be 3 HOFers, where as neither of Nurse or Ekholm have a realistic shot at it they are more at the McDonaugh + Sergachev level. Though I think it still proves a point that you can get away with some roster imbalance so long as the quality is good enough to carry/elevate whatever D partner they have on the otherside.

That said I don't think the Oilers are likely to have comparable D quality to the average SC winner just cause we are more forward centric, leaning on McDrai and spending a large amount of our cap on them.

Could you imagine if Holland somehow found a way to flip Campbell for Saros...anyways gonna be a boring TDL.

If yams can be moved for something of an upgrade I’m down for it but otherwise I think this is our team.

It would be interesting to get Lavoie 10-15 games to see what we have there

We also have Holloway that will very clearly be on the team in the playoffs even if it’s a black ace.

Yep and it couldn’t happen to a more deserving team. **** the flames :laugh::laugh:
