The issue is even if they landed like #4 and drafted McKenna and Reid, by the time they're carrying the team Nylander and Matthews are gone or declining. And they don't really have much else. If you trade Knies you might as well trade Matthews instead.

I don't think Knies gets any more valuable than he is today. And the big issue now is that either one of him or McKenna is playing on that 2nd line. They're both left wingers.

What stands out to Auston Matthews a year from now is the age of their defense. 31, 37, 33, 33, 35...

Having two elite left wingers isn’t an issue. Especially when one of them is an 18 YO rookie and could do with a bit of being eased in.

I'm not saying that's is necessarily an issue. But it's an opportunity that may not be there next year if there's regression. New GM who has a year to show Auston Matthews camp that the team is moving in the right direction. If you don't have a plan for that defense, there's no chance the Leafs win anything.

This team isn't winning a Cup signing players like Mikyhev and throwing their cap space away.

We need a move that is equivalent or close to the move of adding Hyman or Ekholm. A real needle mover. It's been years since we added a player like that.

Holland was an idiot, but at least he did bring in some players that moved the needle, Hyman, Ekholm, Kane (for a time).

If that's not on the market, hold until there is one and let Savoie, Howard, Dach, etc. develop in the meantime.

Or Skinner for Jarry.

I think that's overblown. He can't piss a drop on a team that can't piss a drop. Prior to last season, he was a pretty consistent even strength point producer though. High volume shooter that has some physicality to his game that also happens to be a high end finisher on the powerplay.

He's not my favorite target, but the idea of getting a consistent 50 point middle six winger for $5.5m has its advantages if he comes cheap and you manage the cap better in other areas.

Another area of note is that he's had some chemistry with Trent Frederic in the past. He put up some points on a line with Jesper Boqvist back when the Bruins had their big year.

The oilers are at 7.4M according to Puckpedia.com with 18 players signed. If you sign Dach and Stastney at ~1M each thats only 5.4M left with 20 players signed.

Moving out nurses full 9.25 would give us 14.65M for 3 players to add. Depending on whay they might do, they could bave 4 holes if they want to get 2 forwards, 1 defenceman and a goalie.

I think they are budgeting 7M for a top 6 winger, 2-3M for a 5D and 2-3M on a backup goalie.

Which makes the 5M Mikheyev rumors hard to work in. Unless your moving out money elsewhere I dont see how you can afford him. They could barely make this roster work if the really squeeze the budget.

The typical line in the sand for top 6, 5 on 5 offense is 1.8 pts/60, Debrusk was only above this line 3 times in his 9 seasons as a pro. Last season among Canucks forwards with a minimum of 200 minutes played he was 14th out of 16 only beating David Kampf and Nils Hoglander. If you apply this same standard to Mangiapane he was above 1.8 Pts/60 in 5 of his 8 seasons, with a similar late in career tail off to Debrusk, though Mangiapane still outproduced him 5 on 5 last season with a 1.1 Pts/60.


P.S. Since I'm picking on Debrusk I'll give him one favorable stat on the PP amongst forwards with a minimum of 100 minutes on the PP, Debrusk had a 4.55 Goals/60 which is 2nd best in the entire league.

Wyatt Johnson= 5.6 G/60, Jake Debrusk= 4.55 G/60, Pavel Dorofeyev= 4.25 G/60, Leon Draisaitl= 4.11 G/60, and Kirill Kaprizov= 3.66 G/60.

That's exactly what I've been wondering as well. Also Stauffer keeps pushing Cossa/Levi in addition to a veteran backup, and suggested maybe we run 3 goalies to start the year, and Bowman wants to get Frederic more opportunity under Babcock. I'm having a really hard time understanding how this all fits together with the Mikheyev rumors. Then again, Bowman does things that make no sense all the time, so it probably happens.
