Canadian teams (aside from the Oilers, maybe now the Habs) are just farm teams for sunbelt teams. Pretty sad, but expected in this trash league

Winnipeg has done a pretty good job retaining players all considering. But with them now missing the playoffs, I think the bottom is going to fall out there.

But yeah, the Canadian teams not doing well. But in reality basically like 4-5 teams everyone wants to go to and then maybe another 4-5 that are somewhat desirable for these NHL players.

Wouldn't even need that, just competent management that doesn't toss clauses everywhere.

Other teams are going to be cut throat and he's going to have used up a lot of his prime years on Edmonton, he will need more help in the future. He needs to look out for himself and put himself in the best possible situation.

Yeah, I’d add that the small market American teams are in tough too

NHL becoming the NBA. Very boring

This is starting to get pretty crazy. A lot of people keep saying players want to go where they can win but we have been am elite team for the last 3-4 years and I don't recall many players forcing their way here.

The Oilers never had the cap space or assets to make a move like this either because of dumb management. I mean in theory there was nothing stopping us from making a move on say Jack Eichel when he was available. Canadian teams are managed by a bunch of losers anyway, no one willing to make a real big swing other than Vancouver aggressively trading for Calgary's garbage.

Brady was never waiving to come here

Oilers wouldn't have the balls to make that move regardless. Our lane is sticking to the Henriques and Dickinsons of the world, even in the Holland era he sounded like he was going to have a stroke dealing for Ekholm, like his son was gung ho about the deal and he was unsure.

Teams can find cap space when good players are forcing their way there. You think if Marchand told Boston he wanted to come here we wouldn't have been able to make it happen?

Yup. Same success and no tax and it would probably look a lot different

Even less success and no state tax and it likely would

I’m sure they’d love to have someone like Tkachuk forcing their way here, but the fact of the matter is most elite players don’t want to come to Edmonton..even with 97

Florida and Vegas have weaponized location to a new degree, but the Oilers have also shot themselves in their own foot about 50 times from the management.

Whatever. Carolina just won the cup and they aren't a destination. Ask Rantanen.

Good managers reign supreme. And we get dud after dud.

Well yeah, we're just entering probably an era where lame duck managers like Bowman are just going to get exposed more obviously.

The NHL is probably entering into a super-team era, much like the NBA was going through about 12-15 years ago. So probably a new era of have vs have nots is coming.

McDavid and other guys like Matthews and Draisaitl will probably have to accept they have to go that route eventually too.

That's the point. If a few years ago, a guy like Parayko says he wants to be traded to a contender in Canada, we can likely upgrade on Ceci and probably have a cup.

Yup, Florida was hardly on players' radars until their Cup runs. Sure players went there if paid well enough but it wasn't the same as it is today. It's a good destination in part because they're a well run organization.
