He isn't really one of those size/physicality/grit dinosaurs. He's a lot more speed/tenacity. Guys like Helm, Tatar, Hudler, Abdelkader, Filppula, Brown, Kapanen, Kerfoot, etc.

The best example of a Babcock player on the roster is probably Savoie.
He’s going to love Podkolzin too.

Probably the guy he’ll ask to rank teammates work ethic tbh

Who knows what happened in phone gate. For me the big question is why they fell Babcock is the man for the moment at all. I still say, he did nothing in Toronto to foster any playoff success. There is no evidence that he can translate his Detroit success from two decades ago to today's NHL.

Yeah, honestly I couldn't care less about the phone issues, and don't really care about how badly he treats players either. These are all men, who make millions of dollars playing a sport, they aren't 16 year olds. They have agency and can stand up for themselves IMO. Is Babcock an asshole? Yeah it appears that he is, but that isn't why I don't like the hire.

I don't like the hire because Babcock isn't a good coach anymore, and hasn't been for a long, long, LONG time now.

There could be some Oilers news in the next couple days. Rishaug was hinting on EST that he's going to be leaving the Stanley Cup final today in order to return home to Edmonton to cover some news.

Probably Babcock

Assuming Babcock is hired, I assume this is some indication of the type of player they’ll be targeting in the offseason. I’m sure we’ll hear that the Oilers are interested in bringing Perry and Kane back into the mix. I think they’ll likely sign Mikheyev. It’s gonna be players that are abrasive in some way, who aren’t afraid of playing for a coach like Babcock.
The name is Jones, Max, UFA

95% likely to be a coaching announcement and its sounding like babcock

This team isn't getting any younger. Doubtful we see many retreads, bringing back players that were already in decline when they were here. If Kane isn't in your top six, he's literally hurting your roster at this point in his career.

Mikheyev would be a fit, but all signs point to him being a similarly valued commodity as Dickinson, likely coming in at over $4m AAV. And he's a pure winger.

The confounding thing, and this has applied to other dumb/controversial hires in the past (Virtanen, Bowman, Babcock) is the fact that none of these players or managers are good enough to make the bullshit and the bad PR worth it.

I've been repetitive over the years in saying that being a GM/POHO in Edmonton is effectively a political position. Having the public on your side gives everyone more room to operate. Managers, coaches, players, everyone. Now with this we have a local radio host (Gregor) on a tirade over it, a fanbase whole heartedly against it, and players that probably are thinking they need to just say yes.

In a hypothetical where we start poorly with any other coach, that coach will be given rope to work with even if he starts poorly. That will not exist if we have Babcock. The entire fanbase will go "yep, we were right," demand his termination immediately, and the national media will certainly be circling to find out the intimate details of just what's going on in the room. A slow start under Babcock will end this team, the circus around it wouldn't be possible to overcome.

So the risk is we bury the team by Halloween, with the reward being a pretty mediocre coach at this stage of his career. Why? There is no reason for this. I'd get it if he was Scotty Bowman re-incarnated, but he just isn't. This is more executive management 101 that this group of clowns can't figure out. They have no concept or respect for any consideration beyond what's just right in front of them. Idiots.

Well this seems pretty cut and dry, the league is more or less telling everyone what's up. What an embarrassing display from the Oilers

Totally seems like they are saying just walk away Mike before we have to publically embarrass you.

It's too late for the Oilers though, the fact that it's even got this far is embarrassing enough.

What a month or so? This team is hard to cheer for. The ripping off of the Season Ticket holders to the lack of entertainment value. Now there is some entertainment but its not good value. And if the stars are really on board with this hire, what are they thinking?
