I think the jury is out on this one. We don't have all the details but after a lot of digging it is not at all clear to me that there was going to be a better outcome, particularly for Broberg if he was looking for anywhere near the kind of money that it seems he was.

Peyton Krebs just signed for 2 year at $1.45M on a team with no cap issues. Krebs may not be living up to his full promise but he at this point is more established than Holloway. The Oilers cap for Holloway was probably in the $1.1-1.2M range which comparatively would have been about what I would have expected it to be. Would Holloway have stayed for $1.1M regardless of what the Oilers did with Broberg and his agent looking seeming to get Holloway in the middle of his quest for a much bigger payday?

As to Broberg, it certainly looks to me in hindsight like he was trying to leave. He and his agent must have realized that the Oilers could not afford his demands even at say $1.8M.

Ultimately, both players signed their own tickets out of the city. And it is not at all clear to me that the Oilers with Emberson and Podkolzin plus the ability to ice a larger roster would be worse off over at least the next couple of years.

Right. And his full NTC ends next summer. They already tried to move him. He’s getting traded next summer whether he wants to leave or not. He can only block half the teams in the league, which isn’t enough to keep him in New York. The ask is for him to move that timeline up 2-3 months. I’m not sure where the confusion is.

This is in addition to the Program’s base funding of $27.3M per year.


It seems odd that they would say any foreign specialist is only ever allowed to be a family dr, but I have no real knowledge on the subject, so I won’t argue with you.
This does not include doctors.

Should of had them dealt with before offersheet came into play doesn't sound like they were asking for to much in regards.

Holloway, absolutely. That was a mistake that backfired. I think Jackson overestimated the amount of buy in from the young guys who hadn’t gotten paid yet. But Broberg reportedly wouldn’t extend until the summer, which means he was clearly always looking to sign an offer sheet

I don't know if it applies to Americans, but there's been articles about how Canadian's that go to the United States for schooling don't get preferred treatment when coming back to Canada so one has to assume it could be similar for her

That and you also have to think she wants to start somewhere and have a career. Is Edmonton really going to be on the top of the Trouba's list?
Canada's medical standards for doctors is extremely high. Extremely. In fact, we have doctors that come here to train from around the world. The way it works, to practice in Canada, is you have to do your medical school here. Our admission requirements are ridiculously high. To be a specialist, it must be done here. You can do a sub-specialty elsewhere and practice with that sub-specialty here. Sub-specialties have limited space and the smartest doctors in the world compete for them.

Gee I can work in the US free enterprise system and earn in USD or I can go to Canada and work in the “Medicare” system and earn CDN dollars after. 🤪🤪🤪
Believe it or not, many doctors don't become doctors for the money. My brother-in-law came back to Canada because he wanted to still PRACTICE medicine instead of being in the business of medicine. My best friend turned down prestigious hospitals in the US because he has zero desire to "run" a business. He also hates how US is litigation happy.

Not all surprised. Pure nepo hire from day one. Wildly under qualified for the position.
I disagree. He was the driving force behind both Ekholm and Hyman (as per Stauff). He pushed the analytics side of things and started to change the team's perspective. He had multiple offers from other teams. He got promoted because of those competing offers. I hate the old boys club as much as anyone here- but he was a good hire

He went from never having a job in hockey operations to assistant GM within 3 seasons of joining the Oilers. His previous experience with an NHL team was booking travel for the Maple Leafs.

People wanted to pretend he was some analytics guru and tried to give him credit for every good move the team made while blaming his dad for every bad move.

Reading speculation about the quality of an Assistant GM is hilarious to me.

How is anyone here possibly in a position to know if he was any good or bad? Short of speculation that he liked analytics (enough to determine he was "good" for some), we know literally nothing about him or his work.

I don't expect Ryan and Perry to play full seasons. But in the end the fact that a guy like Hamblin could step in for 31 games and not look out of place tells you most of what you need to know about how much 4th lines really contribute. Moreover, with Kane back in the line up one of Janmark or Brown moves down. So you already have at least one guy who is a very high end 4th liner at full strength. So regardless of how each of us feels about the quality of the current 4th line I just don't see it as a significant hole.

The reality is that for like 95% of 4th line players the most consequential contribution they will make to the team is on the pk. Ryan is a solid pk option still even at his advanced age, but with Nuge, Brown and Janmark taking up most of the time on the pk you really only need one more guy to fill that role. So if Ryan gets waved I would still be confident that the pk will be ok.
I might be misreading things but I really wonder if the plan might be to have Ryan hold the fort down at 4C until around Christmas and then give Noah Philp a look once he’s got his legs back under him at the AHL level. It’s hard to know where he’s at after the year off but he was really good to finish the 22/23 season and probably had the upper hand to take the 4C slot last year if he would’ve played.

Broberg made an in-season trade request looking for opportunity to play instead of stagnating in the press box. There's not really a more clear signal than that. The market/money found him as CBA system enables RFA's to shop themselves when July 1 hits. Holloway would have been competing for 3W icetime with Janmark and a healthy Kane when he is available. Unfortunately the Oilers were in an exploitable situation the market filled the void on Broberg and Holloway's potential unlike players like Kreb, Robertson, and others whose teams chose to keep cap room to mitigate external organizations resetting and assigning new value on their assets.

Anyone here can call me an asshole if they want to, but I'm sorry, your husband might have 5-6 years left in the league. Assuming she's the same age as him, I don't think she'll have a problem picking up at age 35 while not skipping a beat.

When an NHL career generally only exists between the age of 20-35 (at best), I have a hard time listening to people compare it to a normal job.

Exactly. It’s not like it’s a man vs woman thing or anything like that. I don’t think it’s unreasonable to think that most couples would prioritize the higher earner with 5 years of earning potential from age 30-35, and then prioritize the other person’s career from age 35-60.

I don't think you guys are trying to be assholes at all... but you might be missing the point, or perhaps it's just not your area, but:
* Sex can matter... she's a woman... depending on what she wants to be when she grows up and whether she wants kids (that has to happen before 35 too!), her career might be "on a timeline" every bit as much as his... if she wants to do medical research to help establish herself as a credible voice in her chosen sub-specialty, her options may be quite limited... and stands to reason larger centers with bigger teaching hospitals, bigger grants, etc will give her that opportunity NOW when she needs it prior to (I'm assuming here) kids.... she may feel she's got to get established now. Now would be the age to make inroads for the longer term.
* How do you know it's not already her turn? He's already well through the prime of his career... worked hard to get himself traded out of Winnipeg and into a major metro... perhaps (everything we've read would suggest) FOR HER
* "we have specialists too"... yeah... where did they do their training? And what were they doing in their late twenties, early thirties? I'll bet it wasn't following their partner around.

My point is you have no idea where the intersection of their priorities as a couple vs location vs timing vs safe timing to have kids vs the remaining priorities he has in his career would intersect.

A lot would have to line up and it is quite logical that Edmonton wouldn't be top of list and most likely is an impossibility.

I'm guessing Jackson didn't think he needed someone whose entire hockey resume was being a moderator on the NHL.com forums and booking hotel rooms for the Leafs.

That was always the most nepo hire of nepo hires.
Might be some trust issues there with him and his dad. Was Ken leaked negotiations with Broberg and Holloway? Who knows.
