Thats the obvious conclusion, that it is too stressful/time consuming especially for someone who had a long career like he has.
But why now? When his team is poised for a cup. If I did all that work in building up a team I would want to see the job through as the GM. I'm sure at his new role he will still be an important piece but its just weird for him to step down now.

I'm betting some personal/family issues have come up. That or someone was really close to poaching Briesbois (Montreal?) and they had to move fast to keep him in the fold.

I would think that he either has some personal stuff going on or the org forced him out.

There's probably a personal reason.

Kyle Brodziak is a fourth liner and has always been a fourth liner. At 34, I'm not sure why anyone would logically believe he'd become anything more than one.

That was what first came to mind as well. Hopefully nothing too serious if this is the case.

So your telling me Strome doesn't ? lets call spade a spade. Strome tends to vanish for extended periods of time too playing higher up in the lineup with better players. for me ..Playoff Kassian definitely can be different as we have seen. Hes been through the trenches in Windsor, he seems to know when to raise the intensity when it counts in April and May, but can we hope to get the same type of game from Strome ? Don't see it. Not the type of player you go to war with. He might pop in a few here and there, and people start hyping him up like hes the missing link on the third line. Brodziak supplants him on the third line within a month. Book it.
Kassian had one great game in the playoffs. In 13 games he had 3 goals, 0 assists, 27 PIM, abysmal possession numbers, and was even in GF/GA. He also shot at 16%, something he's never going to repeat. His playoff performances are being MASSIVELY overrated.

It's always fascinating to me the way small bits of information can lodge in people's brains and spawn entire narratives. A single moment can be important while also being just a single moment.

He wanted to die a hero instead of living long enough to become a villain.

Some folks in our front office should take cues.

That is what Zidane did for Real Madrid. Won 3 straight European Championships (Super difficult and rare) and suddenly stepped down this offseason. He knew that no matter what he did there was no way he could top it so he left as a hero.

Yzerman just built the team, didnt even win anything yet. Cant say he is a hero although I do recognize the massive work he did.

I think the local media tends to shape fans' opinions on players. The narrative that Kassian was amazing during the playoffs (he wasn't) was being pushed hard by the MSM and people bought it. Pouliot was ripped on by guys like Spector for taking too many penalties his last year here but his penalty differential (-3) was much better than guys like Kassian (-16), Larsson (-16), and Maroon (-6). Eberle was ripped for not going to the dirty areas during that playoff run but if you look at his shot charts they're all in the slot and around the net, whereas Lucic's were all around the perimeter.

Bad players like Russell and Kassian tend to get heralded by our local guys who are still stuck in the 80s (i.e. old-time hockey) who value grit and toughness more than attributes that actually matter. "Soft" players like Eberle, Pouliot, and Petry get run out of town by the media despite clearly providing value to the team.

It's a shame that people blindly buy the narratives fed to them from management and the local beat writers, because more often than not they're dead wrong.

It's more likely that Kassian gets sent to the AHL than Brodziak surpasses Strome on the depth chart.

Zidane could see the team was starting to unravel (Ronaldo, Modric, Kroos, Ramos, Benzema, etc all aging, Perez seemingly not wanting to spend money like he did in the past, some less than convincing UCL performances). It was an ideal time to leave considering the squad will require a massive revamp that will result in a tough season or two.

Yzerman hasn't won anything yet and the team is still primed to contend for a cup. He's in a very different situation than Zidane was.

Considering the media here is essentially on the take with the team I am not surprised.

Can't wait for the games begin to see how this turns out...

I know that this was something that a lot of posters specifically mentioned last year ("his stick is too long"), so it's neat to see it being put into practice!

Spector just said the Sekera is expected back in January. This is the first I have heard of anyone in the media talking about a timeline for Sekera. If he is right this basically means the replacement will be internal.

I was listening and thought he was speculating. Saying if the Oilers were to put Sekera on LTIR and then bring in a 5 mil cap hit, and then Sekera is somehow ready to go in January, then we'd be screwed. Bob then pondered that it should be a certainty to at least free up 2.6 mil if as Sekera would be out at least that long, and if the Oilers were to trade a forward with a 2M cap hit that they could bring in a player making 4.5. AKA Kassian plus a pick for Faulk.

so were basically expecting a crippled Sekera to save the day come January. Cool. Just like last year. If Sekera was bad after his injury last season.. imagine him coming back mid season after his second injury ..... cant wait.

It sounded to me like he said he was expected back in January but speculated about what might happen if he was ready even earlier.

The whole saving $2.6M thing shows that Stauffer does not understand how LTIR works. They don't save cap space with a player on LTIR.

That's not the point. It's not a matter of Sekera saving the day but rather that you can't spend money you don't have!
