I don't get it. So where does he play next year? Isn't he too young to go to the AHL? So he's on the Flyers or what, exactly? It's not like he's in the NCAA, couldn't the Flyers just arranged some sort of loan against his future contract? Unless I'm missing something if he was a sure fire bet to make the NHL in his draft year, why did he fall that far?

Yes, this was about getting him his bonus money to help his family while he develops. Family oriented organization (mostly). One of the many things I love about this team.
Charity aside, there's nothing to be gained by signing him this early. It's dumb. If he sucks (as many 4th round picks do), then you're stuck with a wasted roster spot that could have gone to a more deserving player. You would think they'd have learned their lesson with Laberge, but apparently not.

The contract slides, so the only cost to the team is the bonus money.
Unless he totally flops, they'd give him a couple years in the AHL in any case.

What in the world is going on with that yellow coat.

I know I’m late to the party but I just heard about this story on the Staff and Graph Podcast.

What an amazing gesture from the Flyers and an equally impressive act from this young man. As far as I am concerned, he’s a success in life, even if his hockey career doesn’t work out.

Kudos to the Flyers for doing such awesome work as well. The sports world needs more of this imho.

I know that you folks pride yourselves on being prickly arseholes, but it’s acts like this that remind me of:

Wisdom says he's down to 196 pounds and was told by Lappy to stay in good condition over the summer. They asked him who his hockey role models were growing up and he mentioned Stewart (who's working with him now), Simmonds and Subban.

His brother got drafted by Seattle in the 7th round

He (and many others) benefitted greatly during that Covid year from the AHL essentially being CHL 2.0 with most of the worthwhile AHL vets toiling on NHL taxi squads.

It was weaker than usual BUT at the same time only 32 junior age players played 15+ games...

and he was 10th in production amongst those 32.

And the 3rd highest scoring 18 year old. (after Perfetti and Foerster)

It was still crazy good despite a weaker AHL than usual.

And he had good underlying stats. Over 52% xGF that year.
