Matthews and Marner are both playing timid and small right now. You can see when Matthews is engaged or not by those wide looks vs stops and starts, and when he's overwhelmed he has a tendency to reach in and try to poke check as opposed to just getting into space. He's playing scared and wants to use the stick strip a puck but not using any body positioning to leverage.

They need to shake it off next shift lol
