Part of scouting is projecting improvement - and a key is the player's work ethic.
Looks like Foerster knows he has a weakness and is committed to working on it.

Given his overall skill package, he doesn't have to be a speed merchant, just smooth out the rough edges, improve his burst (some will come with filling out) and edge work. He's already 6'2 194, so he'll probably end up 210-215 lbs, which means if he's an average skater that should be good enough given his size, IQ and shot.

We already have a TK and Frost (and maybe JOB down the road), what we lack are shooters, Allison? Who else?

One thing about Perreault, that was a weird team, 8 players with double digit goals, including 32, 39, 27, 20.
But crazy +/-: Perraault was -34, Guy -31, Bitten -23, Roth -21 - did anyone on that team play defense?
'Course the goalies were pretty bad, Gaudreau .890, Langevin .871. Though only 9 goalies had S% > .900 in the OHL.

I truly have no opinion on this player other than we passed on a couple guys I really fancied. I can’t find any tape. Maybe I’ll consult the Top Prospects Game, if it’s available. His highlights look less one dimensional than I figured, based on his one timer praise.

Yes, but is that a good or a bad thing? I don’t know, so it’s just posing a question. You can argue he’s very good at anticipating or using his range to get into areas to receive those.....or you could argue he’s the benefactor of great passing. Maybe both are true. The fact he lapped his team in points might lean towards the former. I don’t want to act like I know anything though.
We should draft the guy who was setting him up.

I am partial to high IQ players, and he seems to be one.
Guys like Domi show that speed and skill can be overrated, kind of guy who'll score enough to get paid then disappoint. We see these guys every year, they get people excited, then get bought out of their big contract 4 years later.
It often seems the best value are the smart guys with enough skill.

It is good to have speed and be known as a quick skater but if that is the player's primary or even lone quality, with the balance of his ability lacking, eventually he will be challenged.

Two who come to mind are Ron Flockhart and Brad Jones. The former was a whirlwind who lacked enough categorical skills to last at the NHL. The latter was a big free agent signing by Russ Farwell who flopped. Oddly, when Jones was signed that led to a one-day strike not soon thereafter by Ron Sutter who was seeking a better contract during preseason camp. With both sides unhappy, he was traded for Rod Brind'Amour. A free agent "speed" talent led to Brind'Amour in essence. The unpredictability of developing a roster.

Separately, someone somewhere mentioned attitude. The most significant number 1 draft pick in team history who had that deficient reputation was Brian Propp and that crease eventually was ironed into a tidy parcel.

That stride looks wayyyy better than his highlight package

But those type of skating drills are not indicative of a player’s playing stride. There are so many little nuances to generating power in a stride that it has to be habitual to be effective. If a player can’t look good skating during just a skating drill then it’s over for him. What most likely happens is that he will knly be able to transfer anout 5-10 percent of form into his actual game stide. Cootdinated triple extension efforts are not a motor skill you want to ingrain into an 18 year old. Neural plasticity at that age is basically 3 percent of a 6 year old

I need a balanced take.

The negative feedback has been that he's a slow, dumb sniper. The positive feedback has been that he's a sleeper pick with developing skating and a great shot that overshadows a rounded skillset: plus defensive awareness, playmaking ability.

Alright.

So. Seems like he is a Finisher of Opportunities Made By Others. This is a thing I think has been bellowed for since Gagne was traded. So that seems good. One doesn't get into all these one-timer positions on accident. Yes, he would be benefiting from his playmakers' efforts, but again, he has to be making himself open and with a clear lane. We have the playmakers.

He is dinged hard for skating. That's troubling if we want him leading a rush and backchecking. That doesn't sound like his style though? If getting himself open to bang home passes is his Thing, then if we want that to translate then straight-line speed isn't important. What matters is having the skating ability to create space against NHL players. I guess the whole trick will be seeing if he can do that.

This is yet another move that, based on written descriptions that might be totally worthless, indicates we are built more as a possession team than a dump and chase team, yet again. If his straight line speed is butt, then he won't work for that. If he's good at showing up as part of a controlled rush and then being available to shoot, he doesn't need to be as fast, but he needs to be able to create space. So, more incentive to play a system that benefits these skills on our roster.

In short, hell if I know, I guess we will find out. Best of luck to him. Someone tell me about his agility/in-close skating.
