With only two games remaining there basically only two likely scenarios that will play out:

1. Kings earn division title and an opening round match up at home v.s Nashville

2. Kings drop to 2nd/3rd in division and meet San Jose in the opening round

Of the two, which one do you prefer, why, and what's your prediction for series?

This will sound arrogant but the Kings don't care who they face in the West. If the team is good, we'll have to face them anyway if we make it to the Final. And I think we demonstrated in both of our Cup runs that we can play all of the best teams and still dominate the East team in the Final.

This year the West teams are not as strong and the top East team looks like the strongest in years since the Bruins 2011. So really it's more about what East team we play.

reasons for nashville:
--Kings have traveled to st. louis and chicago for many a series. I feel they are a bit more equipped and accustomed for playoff travel over Nashville's limited trips to the west in this kind of situation.
--NSH never gotten passed the 2nd round in team history = a little unproven / a little inexperienced

reasons NOT for nashville:
--hard to remember a time when we had a 60 minute performance against the preds, just not a team we particularly match up well for whatever reason. Games vs. NSH are always a little "helter skelter"... ugh hate quoting emerich
--NSH's D kills us... especially ellis, and he's not even a guy named Weber or Josi..
--Quick's record is 4-8 all time against nashville w/ a SV percentage under 900. YIKES
--no way are the kings in Nashville's heads like they are against St. Louis & San Jose. This playoff matchup will be a first all time.

reasons for SJ
--reverse sweep mind game. General choking nature of the team.
--joe thornton true playoff bust
--short travel could bode well looking pass this round.

reasons for not SJ
--Amped up Martin Jones vs. team that traded him
--Amped up entire team not looking to be embarrassed again
--Healthy Vlasic (missed the last 2 games in the series in 2014)
--seemingly deeper and have been a hot team post all-star break

I don't like either right now... but i think i'll take SJ. there's a more chance of quick getting in their heads and therefore the sharks gripping the sticks and trying too hard to not lose to the kings again. Nothing comes good when you're trying too hard which could easily be a situation SJ could feel in this moment. I don't like Quick's history vs. Nashville... so i'll take SJ

hopefully our D can figure out how to tidy up in the last 2 games leading up to the playoffs.

I think Nashville would give us a harder challenge. They're (Sharks-Preds) only separated by 2 points right now so seeding isn't really indicative, and in fact Nashville will end the year with fewer regulation losses. OT and SO don't matter since it's a different format. Both teams have good defence but I think the edge in goaltending goes to Rinne. I think Laviolette is tougher to coach against than DeBoer. San Jose might have something to prove, but I think they're more likely to wilt under pressure as we've seen in the past. I think Nashville has the potential to outwork us more so than San Jose.

Seriously. The way the Kings play in the RS, they really don't care about a matchup. We go through this every year. Kings just play to make the PO, then it's beast mode. We always mention being rested and healthy coming into the PO. Of course a hot streak helps, but these guys are pros and play when it matters. That usually means when their backs are against some form of wall.

san jose, but it's got nothing to do with neither san jose nor nashville. line of reasoning:

1. division title means almost nothing, cup means everything.

2. home advantage: not so important, as lak performed well on road this season.

lak stats:
- home: 39 gp, 25-12-2, 52 points, w% 0.667, 11th in nhl
- road: 41 gp, 22-16-3, 47 points, w% 0.573, 7th in nhl

sjs stats (!):
- home: 39 gp, 17-19-3, 37 points, w% 0.474, 29th in nhl
- road: 41 gp, 28-10-3, 59 points, w% 0.720, 1st in nhl

nsh stats:
- home: 40 gp, 22-11-7, 51 points, w% 0.638, 13th in nhl
- road: 40gp, 18-15-7, 43 points, w% 0.538, 14th in nhl

3. king should stay 100% focused on their own play. when they play their best hockey, they're really tough to beat. let other teams adjust, west or east, sjs or nsh. just play good kings hockey.

4. most important: conserving energy. it's a long way till june. remember how gassed the guys were two years ago against the hawks and then in the finals? and long trips to nashville will not help in this regard.

Dance off thread sounds mighty tempting, but I kind of want the kings to play whichever team is performing better when the season ends.

My reasoning: Kings tend to play harder against teams who are playing well, and what better way than starting a run for the cup than knocking off a team that was firing on all cylinders. Both matchups are tough and wouldn't be surprised if they go 7, but the Kings need to play with grit of years past.

After the implosion last year and missing the playoffs, I'm probably one of the few already satisfied. Neither opponent will be easy.

As far as preference, I guess I prefer Nashville for the novelty matchup in the playoffs.

I flip flop on this daily. Today I am going to say Nashville so that if LA can get to round 2 they will have home ice advantage.

I love the fact that SJ is so confident right now too after the recent win. We get our injured Gabby back and then we have our scoring punch and then we can beat them again.... I'm not for beating them,,,I'm for demoralizing them through the summer.... regular season is diff. than the playoffs...

Are you sure Gaborik will be back round 1?

San Jose did a lot of good things last offseason and it has paid off all year. Couture is looking like he finally is back to form...They scare the **** out of me...Than again so does Nashville's D and the fact they have a guy who should be a top 7 goalie in the league

I feel the same way.

Part of the fun of playing them in the first round will be beating them handily and destroying their high hopes. :)

It will be very humiliating for them to lose in round 1 again.

The Kings will seriously underestimate the Preds and fall into a 0-3 hole, assuming the Preds are no big deal. Then they absolutely WILL NOT be able to win 4 games in a row. Over. The End......

If the Kings matchup against the Sharks, you're looking at another run potentially involving the Sharks, Ducks and maybe Chicago again. And if they manage to go through all those teams again, you're likely playing the Caps in the finals. The team made it so unbelievably difficult last time around that they probably don't want the same type of run. I'm not saying Nashville is a pushover because they're not, but you're likely going up against 2 teams that are not going to want to get embarrassed again by the Kings.

I see Nashville as a series that can help us fix our game and not get caught up in all the rivalry against the Sharks. And I don't think travel is all that important considering we played the blues in the 1st round a couple years ago.

One of the reasons why I'd actually want to see San Jose in the 1st round is because I'd be really tempted to go to a playoff game up here.

Wait a minute......

When did they change the playoff format? It's no longer 1 vs 8 .... 2 vs 7 ....... 3 vs 6 ....and 4 vs 5 ?!?! When did they change it?! LoL, was it changed during the year the Kings failed to make the playoffs?!

Preds, I want to see the Ducks and Sharks destroy each other.

Although, I do think that the Sharks might be easier because of the lack of playoff experience from their 2 goalies.

Round 1 will probably take 7 games

Would be cool to see the Ducks and Sharks beating the crap out of each other in round 1.

Agreed.

The NHL started using the division based playoff format in 2014. It's why the Kings (third in division) faced the Sharks (second) on the road in round one.

It's also why the ducks had such an easy road to the WCF last year, with Calgary advancing after beating Juggernaut Vancouver.

This. Would love to see a 7 game grueling series between Sharks/Ducks with a guarantee one is gone in the first round.

If the Kings aren't good enough to beat the Preds then they aren't winning a cup, so it doesn't matter.

Ducks/Sharks in the first round is what all Kings fans should be hoping for. I'd prefer not to have two 7 game wars in the first two rounds. Assuming they beat Nashville in the first round even in 7 games I doubt it would be as physical and intense as a series against the Sharks. Plus Nashville and Rinne don't have much history of success in the playoffs either.

was changed with realignment I believe.
