As an example of one our younger guys, Laf is terrible on the PP. He's slow with the puck and honestly Kakko, who didn't look good on the PP either, looked better than Laf does now. Kakko would at least move the puck quickly which Laf is unable to do. Laf receives the pass on the side boards, looks for a seam pass, it isn't there so he then skates down low the puck hoping the seam pass will miraculously open from his slick skating. On the PP you need to move the puck quickly- he should be surveying for the seam pass
before he gets the puck so he can either quickly make that pass or then give it to the next man to get the PKers moving. Skating with the puck when it looks like you have space on the PP doesn't cause defensive breakdowns, it allows the PKers to slowly hone in on you while blocking passing lanes, and pressure the guys closer to you who might be receiving the puck from you.
Zibs stinks whenever there's a teensy bit of pressure on him and I wouldn't hate seeing him bumped off PP1 but at least has a good wrister and slapper which is his saving grace.
I think Gabe will show his slickness at the NHL level, something few of our prospects show, and the coaches will reward him with some PP1 opportunities and if he looks good, he'll stick, if not he won't.
