JT Miller had a very strong tournament his second year as well. Deserved more points than he got and really showcased a lot of the offensive ability that eventually showed itself in the NHL.

True but Gaudreau really drove the bus on that team and line.

Stepan dragged Jerry D’amigos ass up the tournament leader board in scoring.

I started watching the WJC in 2005. Stepan’s performance was the best of any player I’ve ever seen in that tournament.

Eberle was famous for the big goals. Schenn and Bedard racked up points - many on the PP with unreal linemates. Tons of players have been game breaking defensive tournaments.

Stepan was all of these things wrapped up in one. And he was captain to boot. Miller was good, but Steps isn’t a fair comparison for pretty much anyone in that tournament haha.

It’s really a shame how bad his skating was at the NHL level.

Kreider and Stepan both played huge roles on that team. Even Ryan Bourque was a good role player. That was one of the best WJCs for Ranger prospects.

You need to let this kid marinate very well at that level because he has unreal offensive IQ but we want those physical skills to improve dramatically because if they do he will be a top 10 scorer in the league and a superstar. With him its mostly his skating [huge thing], his strength [which is fine for his age currently] and his willingless to shoot more because he has a very good shot. He reminds me a lot of Panarin not so much in the skill with the puck but in the ability to generate offense and drive play and just know how to cause damage to a defense without thinking too much. His vision is great. Very high Off IQ and he is more of battler than Panarin.

I wonder what happened to those players that had good stats in these tournaments that disappeared. Danny Kristo, Jerry D'Amino, Jeremy Morin, Jordan Schroeder. What a bunch of busts playing in these tournaments .

I actually see above average skating with him already this year. I think it was overblown as a deficiency, it's only "deficient" in comparison to his other offensive attributes and IQ which are sky high. It's his "weakness" but not weak in comparison to other players.
But yeah, let him do the two years in college, I agree.

His size/strength has been a bigger issue this year than his feet.

His feet get him to exactly where he needs to be (and honestly, Smith doesn't move around much better than he does. He skates better, but not leagues better.)

He's had some issues being eaten along the walls (to the point where he can't even work his way through this occasionally.) Thats going to need to change.

To his credit, he's minimized the frequency of this as much as he can but thats going to be tougher to do as he moves up.

wasn't ranger property at the time obviously but trouba was probably the most important player on that team. gaudreau was electric but trouba had maybe the most dominant performance from a dman i've seen in that tourny because it was both sides of the puck. he was hammering people and probably put up close to the same amount of points as gaudreau.

Oh, I remember this very well. The Leafs fans during this time were insufferable.

Stepan stirred that team. He was the man who kept it together and his play elevated everyone around him.
