Draft Round 1 #23: New York Rangers Select RW Gabriel Perreault (Boston College, NCAA)

With the way the NCAA schedule is, it's not outside of the realm of possibility that Perrault may have started the season at ~165-170lbs and actually finish it HEAVIER and STRONGER than when he started.

I mean it's possible but for someone who is still doing on ice sessions between games and isn't naturally inclined to putting on weight, his details (diet/work/recovery) have to be really, really, really dialed in to grow AND make sure that he has enough left in the tank to perform in game.

It's hard enough to expect that of anyone, let alone an 18 year old college student. If he can do it, props to him but most of that growth is going to have to come in the summer IMO.

It'd be nice to know where hes at right now vs the combine though.

I think I heard an interview over the summer that Perrault gained weight last season at the US program so I think he can do it. Is it difficult when you are exerting so much effort, yes, but the counter to that is hockey is a combination of both strength training and cardio so even if he is just gaining muscle and losing fat, his weight should increase as muscle weighs more than fat. In saying that, I'm unsure how much fat he actually has at ~5'10-11 and 165lbs...

He was 17 at the combines, no? Just a kid. What makes you say he's not naturally inclined to put on weight?
Anyway, college players have a lot more time for the weight room/off ice stuff. If there's any program where it would be feasible to put on muscle during the season, it's college. Not saying it happens, but if he WANTS it to, there is a decent chance.

The skating is always mentioned because he’s got a strong stride but hasn’t hit his growth spurt yet, so he has to fill out and add muscle, and so he’s not at full speed yet.
His mechanics and fundamentals are strong, he’s just light and doesn’t have a ton of burst yet.
Okay, sounds great! Thanks. So, there's much hope, isn't there?

They aren’t related to Gilbert Perreault lol
No shit? Then who the hell told me he was? Made me look stupid (which, btw I am)

He's not a pretty skater but he does get separation from defenders and such.

Here's my thing re: Perreault with Leonard and Smith. Perreault was the leading scorer for USA last year and he's only 1 point off BC lead. If he was riding coattails wouldn't he not be either team lead or 2nd?
There are players that are drivers and players that compliment the drivers efficiently. That's not to say they aren't good, they can be very good. But the drivers (or perceived drivers) will always be more valued.
