That and his value right now is still not going to be tied to, what I envision, his future success.

I do see him becoming an 80-90pts player.

Marchenko absolutely moves the needle for us. One of the few available that does. I am a little dubious we are actually in for him, but that would be a great pick up for us

You are right. Some people think correlation equals causation. Sebastian Aho did not just win the cup for Carolina. Usually the best players growing up are put at center so naturally a lot of the best players that win cups are also centers. A team with great wings, defense and goalie and just a good center can win cups. Once you cross over center ice forward positions become very mixed with wings and centers going all over the ice. McDavid, MacKinnon, and Draistal are arguably the 3 best centers. How many cups have they won combined? Yes I know Leo often plays wing. If center was everything then they would not put Leo on wing.

It's always like this in the offseason. Unbridled optimism. After two weeks of regular season games are in the books instead of turning down Cuylle for Kirill Marchenko trades we'll be proposing Cuylle for Kirill Markowitzko the guy who sells really good hot dogs outside Penn Station.

Its moot. not gonna happen anyway. Next summer he's an RFA and that price tag we cannot afford.

The cost both in trade and dollars/term makes it a dangerous expensive kinda lateral move.

When it comes down to it Chris's job security is between him and Dolan. I'm not a betting person but I would guess that Drury and Dolan have had the odd discussion about the Rangers. Chris might keep the press and the fans in the dark but Jimmy Dolan is different and when Dolan signals his approval of Chris and that he's going forward into the future with him as Rangers GM it's because he knows what his intentions are and he approves of them too.

I have no idea how the Knicks winning the NBA championship impacts all the above but I would also guess that Mr. Dolan will want to get the Rangers back on the winning side of things too and as quickly as possible.

As for turning over vets and going younger we are seeing some of that too.... just not as much as you would like. It remains to be seen on all of Smits, Greentree, Beaudoin, Laba even Perreault to some degree. I think Perreault and Smits particularly have bright futures. How also the Rangers see the likes of Lafreniere, Cuylle, Schneider who are still young pros. Dorofeyev is 26. If all of this works out we'll have kind of a youngish core and if it doesn't work out as well as we hope then it's what the f*** time all over again. We're pretty good these days at churning out young bottom 6 and bottom pairing players. These guys with higher upsides though we need more of them to make good on their promise.

From a personal standpoint I'm 68 and I've been fighting this goofy health battle for the past 6 years. There's a pretty decent chance that by the time Perreault, Smits are ready to retire I'll be out of the picture altogether which is not necessarily even the worst outcome. I'm not counting on it but I would like very much for this team to actually somehow or other get its shit together. But there are other things too---I mean the times we're living in are insane on a multiplicity of levels.

2. Lafreniere, unfortunately, it’s going anywhere. It’s my (strong) and (unpopular) opinion that we will live to (deeply) regret holding him. This was the window. Gut feeling it goes back downhill, for good.

3. As assets, I value Cuylle over Lafreniere, and I would do Cuylle + Schneider in a Marchenko deal. (I could see Cuylle in Columbus).

But, again, not happening.

Laf getting his big boy deal right before prices increased is going to be a good thing for the team going forward. Even if he has already plateaued.
