Gabe – Mika – Laf
Doro – JT – Björk
Cuylle – Laba - WHO KNOWS?
A LOT OF 4th line OPTIONS

Gavrikov – Fox
Petterson - Durzi
?? => Smits – Schneider
LOTS OF #7 OPTIONS.

Igor
A couple of options

THIS IS BY NO MEANS OPTIMAL> BUT SHOULD BE BETTER THAN A WEEK AGO. TIME MIGHT TELL. BUT I still get the feeling one move is left somewhere. Raddysh to Toronto?
Team is looking better on paper. Defense much better. Still want Schneider moved. Team dealt with a lot of injuries last year, so we should be better if healthy. I worry about Fox. Always injured.

I still think we're going to struggle to score goals, especially at ES, but what else is new. I dont expect much from the 3rd/4th line. Hoping they suprise me. Not sure we're better than a 1st round exit, but you never know.

LGR!

Vince M mentions rangers were talking to Tolvanen so that may happen still

Trade Schneider for picks and young F?
Sign a RD 3rd pair ? Peeke

If not oh well Schneider is still young

I still don't think it's a guarantee Schneider is here opening night. Would rather move him for a similarly aged/potential forward than play him on the 3rd pair.

Morrow/Iorio/Smits/Robertson/Vaak can cobble together the bottom pair.

Where did Vince mention Tolvanen? That would be a big pickup. Would probably have to go long-term to get the AAV down because I saw there was a lot of interest

Not a certainty for sure. Having him as a depth option to rise in case of injury is a good option, as others have said. Both Fox and Durzi have missed games of late.

But it's also worth asking if that's the most economical use of the player.

If they do keep Schneider and sign him, they can keep him another year and have him still be RFA, but then you risk disgruntling the player. 6x6 is a lot to spend on a #5, although considering what's going on around the league, maybe that's necessary.

I'm still half expecting NYR to add another forward who can play center in a pinch. Sundqvist, Kampf, Kurashev are there. Jarnkrok is washed.

Considering how he gets abused in this group....why would he be worth a first ???
I’d rather keep him unless that’s the return.

Durzi is good but he’s been hurt the last 2 seasons. Maybe he wasn’t build for Utah altitude and dryness.

Need Dolans son to inject him with everything he’s got.

Schneider is a luxury but a nice depth option if someone gets hurt. If he's willing to sign reasonably keeping him isn't the worst option. If an overpayment is available via trade then it is probably worth moving him. I would also like to see him packaged in an attempt to add one more top-6 scoring winger if that's possible.

Honestly I think this is a good roster for what should be considered a transition year for the retool. Next year is when Drury should push all of his chips in and see if his big gamble pays off. Unless this season is a disaster, then abort mission and tear it all down.

If Borgen got a 2nd and 3rd.... can Schneider get a 1st?
Would’ve preferred to trade Schneider than the 2030 first for Pettersson.

Feel like the team is still a top 6 forward short and that’s assuming Miller and Zibanejad can sustain this level as they age. Maybe they’re leaving an opening for someone like Greentree to step in and fill it, but Schneider or the assets he’s traded for could be used for that.

I estimated 5.5 aav for schneider but this roster carrying 3 goalies has 2.8 mil in cap space leftover. If the idea is to move Schneider for picks, you can absolutely fit Tolvanen or another higher priced top 6 forward. Obviously Vaak and Raddysh would need to go as cap dumps in separate trades. There's still plenty of breathing room.

If that’s his asking price…. Yeah no thank you. He has stagnated or regressed in every area. He needs to show something this season

That Kartye spot is just wide-ass open for Greentree if he is able to emerge on the scene. Or, more likely, mix Greentree on the Miller line and Bjork with Laba for balance.

I’m just weary of signing vets because I know sully will default to them.

I do think, Beaudoin makes the team. He’s a coaches wet dream. Sully loved Sheary just based on work ethic…

Drury might want him in Hartford to start building a rapport with everyone there.

Right. I think Kartye is an easy guy to slot in on the bottom line and thats even preferable.

From a few years back but he seems like a perfect fit on the 3rd with Cuylle and Laba

I heard he was getting 4-5 year offers, but if he also wanted a 1 year prove-it that'd be fine. Might make keeping Schneider trickier with the cap. Still doesn't solve the center depth concern, but maybe Beaudoin becomes the first man up from the AHL. He is only 20, though.

Even a 4-5 year deal isnt the end of the world. Tolvanen is only 25 and Bjorkstrand is a 1 year commitment. You can always find a place for a guy like him. Hits a lot and forechecks well. I see him in the mold of Barbashev and Lehkonen who do a lot of the little things for winning teams.

Edit: He's 27 not 25

Is it really over, though? They're still free to make to moar deals
Maybe they will but for that to happen Schneider goes because he will take up the rest of the cap space left

I’d like Vaak , Raddysh, Parsinnen out but it’s not like their cap hits provide that much savings

Edstrom-Carrick-Rempe

Gavrikov-Fox
Soucy-Borgen
Vaak-Schneider

Those were the players who played game 1 last year (though maybe not the exact lines/pairings). Here are the projected lines and pairings for game 1 next year:

Gabe-Zib-Laf
Cuylle-Miller-Dorofeyev
Kartye-Laba-Bjorkstrand
Chmelar-Veleno-Raddysh

Gavrikov-Fox
Pettersson-Durzi
Robertson/Smits-Schneider

Igor

Gabe is much younger than Panarin, but he is a downgrade in terms of production. However, Laf was much better with Gabe on that line, so let's call that a wash.

We replaced Trocheck with Dorofeyev on the 2nd line. More goal scoring, less assists and faceoffs. Call it a wash.

On the 3rd line, Kartye and Bjorkstrand are upgrades over Sheary and Raddysh. And on the 4th line, Chmelar and Raddysh are upgrades over Edstrom and Rempe, but Veleno is a downgrade over Carrick, so call that a wash.

So, our 3rd line is better and we are overall deeper than last year. More importantly, perhaps, is that we got much younger in two key spots in the top 6 without sacrificing production.

On defense, the 1st pair is the same, but the 2nd and 3rd pairs are better. In goal, we may have gotten worse replacing Quick with Korpisalo, but we'll see.

Overall, we are better than the team we started with last year, but not significantly so. More depth, less reliance on a few vets, with more young players playing key roles.

That's the current team. Now let's look at the farm system. We used 4 1st round picks (Smits, 2 on Doro, 1 on Pettersson). We got 3 players who should all play for us for many years, which is a good return for those picks. We also added Greentree and Beaudoin, both recent 1st round picks. We also drafted 8 other players to add more depth and potential to our farm system.

So, the final analysis is that both the team and the farm system have gotten younger and better. It's a good step in the right direction, but we obviously need more. We need Gabe and Laf to become consistent point per game players. We need Cuylle to take a step forward, and for Doro to keep building on what he did in Vegas. We need guys like Smits, Emery, Greentree and Beaudoin to develop. We need to find replacements for Zib and Miller over the next 2 or 3 years. We need to figure out what the plan is going forward with Fox (re-sign or trade) and continue to backfill the defense to eventually replace Gavrikov, Petterson and Durzi.

I think we are in pretty good shape everywhere but at center. Maybe Beaudoin becomes a 2C, but we absolutely need to find bona fide 1C somewhere. Right now, the only plan there seems to be the hope that McDavid will sign with us as a UFA.

We're set in goal but will need to find the heir apparent to Igor before too long, and I'd like to add a stud RHD to the mix to eventually replace Fox.
