We've been playing Victor Olofsson and we think this is going to sink us?

We're getting him for free, if his hips are shot, he goes on LTIR. If he ends up being solid, awesome. I wanted no part of this to start the season but the offense has looked pretty bad, I think something has gotta happen. I would've liked Kulich but they don't seem very set on that just yet.

Cause he's shot. And it was obvious going down the stretch last year.

There are much better 4th liners around the league.
ex player Adams was NEVER going to make that hard decision. The Sabres had enough pr problems with vet players getting the f out of town and others on NTL's. Perhaps they can manage his minutes the 2nd half of the season or after he gets 1000 next week, and then get him into the front office.

Like I said…we’ve entered the coach with no answers leans on shot vets part of the story. If this happens…hope Kane gets back to some form next year while he’s blocking young players Granato won’t use anyway because he, again, has no answers and will be coaching for his job.

And don’t buy a single damn piece of merch with his name on it. Terry doesn’t deserve it.

To me 2 years isn’t a big deal since LTIR is a thing and if his hip is no different from the others than he’ll play 20 games and sit on LTIR for a year plus. It should hopefully rid us of Olofsson’s lack of anything and 3 more Cup rings in the locker room can’t hurt.

It all comes down to, in my opinion, is he now a grown up where coming home won’t make him a detriment but rather a boon. If the former Id be surprised based on everything we already know about Adams and Granato. If the latter, regardless if he can play 20+ games we’ll get a guy with a superstar pedigree, 3 Cups, a Conn Smythe and still considered the best stick handler in the league by his peers.

Plus it’s a great marketing ploy to be honest so as long as they trust his character and see at least a chance he could be a solid 3rd line scorer and PP specialist than I see no negative here.

If you can still sign Mitts long term than I can deal with a 2X3-4 for Kane

I don't think you sign Mitts long term unless the team success is more than just a bubble team.

The question is:

Fundamentally, can you win a championship with a center spline of Thompson, Cozens, Mittelstadt as your 1-2-3 centers.

None of them are great defensively or even two way centers.

Especially if we are going to have to pay the center price for him.

Are there any recent memories of championship teams without a center who could at lease play some defense in their top 9?

If you're going to have thoughts like this, shouldn't you be considering a Cozens trade instead of not signing the better player? Forget trading Cozens, move him to RW and think about adding a two-way C and still re-signing the better C you already have.

It takes some convoluted thinking to rationalize not keeping Mittelstadt medium to long-term.

I'm placing a marker down on this being an attempt to get the teams he really wants to sign with to up their offers ie: Team is being used ala Smallcock.

I'm wondering if it'll have the opposite effect. We're finally getting defensive buy-in from Tage and others.....our defense is the best it's been in the rebuild........................and all of a sudden we're paying for an injured, all-offense, no-defense winger.

And I've never gotten the sense that Kane is some fantastic leader in the locker room either.

If Kane is right, this could go very well.

But this also has the potential to go very, very, very wrong.

I don’t know. How much more very, very, very wrong can it go for this franchise? Another season or two out of the playoffs?

If that happens it won’t be because they signed Patrick Kane.

Signing Kane will prevent them from getting the type of help they actually need, which absolutely could be a primary factor in them delaying a playoff appearance another 2 or 3 years.

While I'm against signing Kane for the most part and would rather go elsewhere, I don't know how much I agree with this. But I see why some would have that thought process.

I don't want anyone involved in the Kyle Beach situation anywhere near this team, period. It's been a long time since he was a kid punching cab drivers here too, but obviously nobody here has forgotten. That he's a rapidly aging has-been with huge medical question marks over his head is, quite honestly, secondary for me.

If he's added to the team, I just simply won't feel very good about watching them. I was at least having fun with last year's team.

The biggest issue with Kane in my eyes is the cap repercussions.

Assuming they re-sign Mitts (which they should), and Joker (should if he keeps up this level of play - if not, a more expensive upgrade may be needed), and EJ, (he said he is trying to earn another year here and I think he has)..... by my math, that leaves the team with around 10.5M to sign 6 forwards.

If Kane comes in at 3.5 for next season, that means you have 7 million for 5 forwards.

Assuming the extras 2 forwards are ELCs, the team would have 5.2 for 3 bottom six regulars.

Is Krebs one of them? Are Girgs and KO back? I believe most on these boards would like to see at least one and possibly two strong upgrades in that bottom six to bring some jam, strong defensive play, and some playoff intensity. Without Kane, the team could play Benson in his spot and have almost 10M to fill out the bottom six and extra skaters.

Strong bottom six upgrades instead of adding Kane would be a much wiser use of cap and actually address what this team is sorely lacking. imo.

EJ isn't getting re-signed. Also, did you add the 5.5 million that will be going up by next year?

Players with NHL experience are now considered “magic beans” by brainwashed Sabres fans. You can make this crap up, the insanely low expectations of Sabres fans.
But you view recent 1st/ 2nd round picked players expendable and traded for 1-2 yr rentals just to get into the playoffs.

They have the space to play with next year and adD a $4M player.

Kane would probably have the best vision and iq among our forwards it's next level his legs might not be what they used to be but his positioning and the way he plays doesn't need top end speed the hands and passing ability are all top notch
Let's say
Skins-tt-tuch
Quinn-cozens-kane
Greenway-mitts-jjp
Quinner and cozens with their playstyle would work well with Kane pp
Skinner-mitts-kane
TT and dahlin would be sick Thompson on the left with Kane and dahlin controlling play on the right would be sublime with skinner on the bumper with mitts being bumper/behind the net guy. Like it or not Kane instantly improves the top 9 and pp 2nd unit you can have
Tuch cozens jjp
Quinn power
I'd like Greenway in there somehow maybe split time with skinner depending on how we set up could be great as a screen and tip guy

EJ wants to come back. I think bringing him back at 3 if he keeps playing the way he is and having him be the vet presence(PK player coach) and depth D is a solid option. Otherwise, when injuries happen, who is your #7 that is now in the lineup? Or #8?

D depth will still be an issue if one or 2 D are not brought back and there is an injury or three.

As for my numbers, that is based on an 87.5 cap which is the early estimate I think.
